Are you saying that nuclear is cheaper than renewables?

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

In this universe we didn't though, I'm not sure why the multiverse is relevant here.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Nuclear is 2-4 times more expensive and grid scale batteries (the most costly way of storing power) are already being used.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I guess. If we're in this hypothetical alternative universe then those plants built in the 80's would be at the end of their lives and we'd be looking to spend a fortune to replace them with new nuclear or we'd be saving money by building renewables.

I'm still not sure what this line if discussion is accomplishing though.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Wind works great at higher latitudes but what we need to be looking at is high voltage DC lines to transfer power over long distances with minimal loss.

The fear of being labelled an antisemite has worked very well for silencing opposition for decades now. I guess Bibi thought that tactic would continue to work no matter how vile his government and military acts.

Oops.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

It’s less effective because it’s a classic example of the boy who cried wolf. If you’re grouping people who are appalled by Israel’s conduct with actual antisemites then the accusation of antisemitism loses credibility.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

It seems to be happening almost in real time. I was called an antisemite several times just a couple of months ago for expressing outrage at what Israel is doing. I don’t see that accusation being thrown around nearly as much recently.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I have to ask why? I can't see any positives outside of fleet vehicles and there are plenty of negatives.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Aren't EV batteries good for the life of the vehicle? Why would you want to replace one?

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not sure I agree. Lots of EVs have a 250+ mile range. I'd need a 30 minute break after driving that kind of distance.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

You have that backwards.

I don't think so. Think of the engineering challenges. The battery would have to be a separate structure so more weight, less range/performance, more wear on tires and brakes, less rigidity unless you add even more weight, etc.

Batteries can be replaced now. It's just a time consuming job but one that might only need doing once.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I find this kind of comments so stupid.

Nice.

That's where I stopped reading.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Its selling point for me was that it was quick and cheap. If it's neither of those things then I have way better alternatives.

Do you really think PV cells and nuclear fusion are in any way comparable? What a strange take.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Do you have a basic understanding of the challenges of getting electricity from a fusion reaction vs the challenges of manufacturing PV panels?

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I asked a question, a relevant one. Your reaction to that question is your problem.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

If chiropractic was legit people wouldn’t have to keep going back for more “treatment”.

If you’ve got a bad back, watching your posture and doing some core strength training is more effective.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

One point of going to a MD is to treat an existing condition. Obviously not every condition can be cured but that’s the aim. Chiropractic doesn’t even try and treat a condition, it’s all about short term relief.

I tend to click around when I'm listening to digital music, it's so easy to put on something else, skip a track, and generally fuck about.

If I'm listening to vinyl I tend to listen to the entire album. It's a better way of focussing my attention.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Greed. I remember Thatcher selling off public utilities. If you had money you could buy into the IPO and make absolute bank in the short term. If you didn't have any spare cash, fuck you for being poor, and the wealth gap increases.

In the long term, those that got paid by buying shares in these new companies got shafted along with every one else as prices increased, quality of services declined and enshittification set in.

On one hard there's the emergence of the best chat bot we've ever created. Neat, I guess.

On the other hand, there's VC capital scurrying around for the next big thing to invest in, lazy journalism looking for a source of new content to write about, talentless middle management looking for something to latch on to so they can justify their existence through cost cutting, and FOMO from people who don't understand that it's just a fancy chat bot.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

They're impressive, no doubt but the jury is still out on how useful they actually are given their ability to be confidently incorrect about all kinds of things.

IchNichtenLichten ,

I wonder if they're trained on content from Reddit's politics subs.

The lack of "real world complaints" and "anger" in popular music genres helps keep the masses docile

Been thinking a bit about this, popular music (the ones that hit top 100 charts or whatever) never has lyrics that point out real problems or point to culprits and how they're fucking our shit, which is very easy to find in punk rock and some variations, as well as rap....

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I think it's because the top 100 or whatever chart you're looking at is meaningless these days. It used to be a fair representation of what people were listening to, I remember people taping the top 40 off the radio on a Sunday to listen to through the week, everyone was on the same page regarding new single releases.

Now we're atomized, I don't even know what the #1 single is on any given week and I don't care. I've got 30,000 tracks on my home server. There's no new artist who can speak for a generation like Dylan or Woody Guthrie could in their day.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

It's a byproduct of diminishing sales of singles. You couldn't rig the charts in the 70's or 80's without spending a small fortune.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe this time it will be different. (Inset some weird emoji that denotes is won’t with a mix of sadness, regret, and ennui)

I love Eno’s ambient music but it’s really distinct from the cheesy musak you’re referring to.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think it’s really helpful to group a bunch of different technologies under the banner of A.I. but most people aren’t knowledgeable enough to make the distinction between software that can analyze a medical scan to tell me if I have cancer and a fancy chat bot.

U.S. Pledge To Triple Global Nuclear Energy By 2050 ( www.huffpost.com )

When I first read the titile, I thought that the US is going to have to build A LOT to triple global production. Then it occured to me that the author means the US is pledging to make deals and agreements which enable other countries to build their own. Sometimes I think the US thinks too much of itself and that's also very much...

IchNichtenLichten ,

Lots of nuclear bros being confidently incorrect in here. Same as it ever was.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

As long as it's primary season and we're workshopping far right brain farts ... free guns for all kindergartners? Make dogs wear pants? NBA but for white people? Grammy category for songs about how things used to be better?

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

It’s the opposite. Nuclear outputs as close to 24/7 as possible, you can’t ramp it up and down to accommodate variable output from renewables for practical and economic reasons.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

Interest rates too, I’d imagine. Investing in new nuclear and expecting a decent ROI would be a dumb move now.

IchNichtenLichten ,
@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

You can do the same with excess power from renewables though. My point was that you need something to fill in the gaps when renewable output is low, whether that be from batteries, pumped storage, peaker plants, etc.

Nuclear doesn’t fit in here, there are no nuclear peaker plants.

@IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.world avatar

The problem with solar is that the sun doesn’t shine overnight.

Big if true. Winds tend to be stronger at night though.

if you’re relying a lot on solar, you need to build a big-ass battery that you charge during the day and use at night.

Or pumped hydro, compressed gas, molten salt, green hydrogen, etc.

Nuclear is good for baseline power

Base load. See here: https://cleantechnica.com/2022/06/28/we-dont-need-base-load-power/
