Friends of mine in education want to join Mastodon, for education-focused accounts. (Yay!)

I am looking for instances to recommend to them that:

  • Are a good home for a K12 (and sometimes K16) education account.
  • Have good moderation.
  • Stable instance, probably going to last for a while.
  • probably not a massive instance, medium-sized is better.

I'm aware of https://mastodon.education/.

If you have recs, please share. Thank you!

Thank YOU for letting me know you joined the Knowledge Commons instance as a result of my above report on it. They -- @hello -- might also be glad to know this.

Speaking of your mission of films for social activism, through our family friend in Tokyo, I happened to encounter such a group based in NYC led by a Chinese-American woman, with collaborators in Canada and here in Japan. I reviewed their most recent documentary -- available free at https://hi-lo.tv/Our-Work -- on professional photography of Japan's hostess bars, as explained at https://hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty/112621109879323004

Being a career academic, it was my first foray into a film review or that kind of content, but it all goes toward my challenge as a Japanologist of explaining this inscrutable culture (for once a stereotype is an understatement!). If you happen to contact Hi Lo TV, please give them my regards.

I'm so fed up with mods falling for the "holocaust inversion" bullshit, I'm going to start reporting all apologist posts as "supporting violent ideologies."

Nice demonstration of why mastodon's dominance is problematic

    See the conversions here:
    https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4628
    and
    https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/federating-the-content-of-posts-note-articles-and-character-limits/4087

AFAICT, mastodon's decisions, which are arguably problematic (on which see: https://lemmy.ml/post/14973403) are literally trickling down to other platforms and infecting how they federate with each other as they dance around mastodon's quirks in different ways.

It seems like masto is ruining "the standard" with its gravity.

None of that matters if Mastodon doesnt implement these suggestions or standards. And from past experience its extremely unlikely that they will. Thats why I think its best to ignore what Mastodon does, its not our concern how they decide to render things.

    Fisch ,
    @Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

That's kind of what I meant too, if there's a standardised and correct way to implement things, that's how projects should implement it instead of trying to do it the "Mastodon" way

    Reflecting on the firefish/calckey "moment"

which was about a year ago now, I can't help but suspect it was a small event with wider implications on the dominance of in the

I think it was the last chance to direct the twitter migration energy into discovering new/different fedi platforms.

And it was blown, with alt-social in a weird steady/waiting state that's smaller I suspect, than what many hoped for.

    Subversivo ,

The problem is that Misskey code is bad. This is the main reason the forks exist at all.
Iceshrimp is rewriting from scratch in C# and it's my main hope for the *keys.

The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

    Wait, what?

Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

The goal: hosting services like , , !? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

    Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

I was going to host pihole on an old android until I noticed it getting quite warm while continuously connected to power. Realised I didn't know the lifespan of the battery and didn't want it tp start a fire.

Isn't call for genocide and mass murder, against mastadon's polcieis?

How can a person openly say such outrageous thing that we need to be thankful that Netanyahu did not do what this guys grandparents did almost 80 years ago and murdered millions of people?

A person saying the same thing about Israelis would be banned and suspended IMMEDIATELY. But such despicable calls go unpunished.

The protest has no issues with taking while they ignore taking.
You can identify the sympathy terrorists because their feed is void of any mention of hostages after 6 months of hostage negotiation.
I'm sure no one would notice if the started taking hostages while sending Christian martyrs to . 🙄
