Connect for Lemmy App

This magazine is not receiving updates (last activity 0 day(s) ago).

tired_lemming , in Feature request: Warn when leaving App to open a link

I would love it too. I've accidentally clicked to an article instead of scrolling down too many times.

threelonmusketeers , in Feature request: Warn when leaving App to open a link

Slightly off topic, but I've found the YouTube mobile website viewed in Firefox to be superior to the YouTube app.

In recent days, I've experienced the same on Thunder. So I'd guess it's not a bug not with Connect but with Lemmy.

remotelove OP ,

I made a comment about this on that specific post and others responded that they are seeing the same problem. (I should of asked for client details as well in hindsight.) So yeah, likely a Lemmy thing like you say.

I'll leave this post up as a note to the dev, just in case.

I ended up hiding the post this morning. I assumed it had to do with the 0.94 upgrade of lemmy.ca, but its a good idea to post here too. I've been wondering if anything in 0.94 would require an update to Connect.

Try hitting the communities tab at the top. Search shows posts first by default.

@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

No, it's not that, even if I subscribe and tap on the community on the left it displays wrong.

I think it may be showing "all", which means it's the same or similar bug as the post before mine.

SkyezOpen ,

Oh I see now. That's weird. Can't reproduce it on my end so maybe a federation fuck up?

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

It works on the web interface!

SkyezOpen ,

Sounds like an Oops with the app then. Check settings, maybe reinstall?

i_am_not_a_robot OP ,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

If I switch to an account on a different instance it works!?

threelonmusketeers , in Feature Request: Option to change image download location

Related but slightly more ambitious request. It would also be cool if we could also change the app install location to external storage (micro SD card).

ramble81 , in "Failed to retrieve Redgif video" error

Just checking you’re not in a state that passed one of those draconian porn verification laws? Redgifs is following suit with whichever states PornHub is blocking. Try launching the lemmy page in your browser directly and see what you get too.

Please_Do_Not OP ,

Good call, hadn't even thought of that as a possibility!But nope (thankfully!), in a sane, blue, porn-friendly state, and looks like everything works for me in my browser.

threelonmusketeers ,

Any NSFW settings within the app which might be blocking them?

Please_Do_Not OP ,

Nope, I can see all NSFW posts that aren't linked to redgifs and maybe 25% of redgifs links load correctly, but 75% stay loading until the "Exception: failed to retrieve..." pops up as a banner at the bottom of my screen.

SkyezOpen ,

Try opening external, then deleting the "api" at the front of the link.

Please_Do_Not OP ,

Opening external works; the bug is that the gifs don't load in the app

Fake4000 , (edited ) in [Request] Fork an open source version of Connect (suggestions and discussion welcomed)

I agree. Connect is a great app but it's closed source nature makes me step back in using it.

If it was open source I can see myself switching to it.

I remember the developer mentioned something about this once, and I had to scroll way to far back to find it: https://lemmy.ca/comment/1264956

I can totally understand being somewhat insecure about your code, or have the feeling that you need to do this/this/that before you can publish it online.
And indeed dealing with an issue tracker, pull request that people expect you to review, forks of your code being published elsewhere, finding and trusting other developers to commit directly to your project can feel stressful.
Disabling issues and pull request on GitHub could resolve some of these issues.

Connect is a fantastic app, and still my favourite lemmy client. I hope it will continue to work en be great for a long time. And most importantly that the developers still has fun working on the project.

remotelove OP ,

Being turned into a development manager doesn't sound like fun, TBH. Over the years, I have watched quite a few projects suffer because of developer drama and that would suck.

Sometimes, open source just isn't the answer and it's why I am trying to start a discussion around that. Maybe if a super senior android dev were to volunteer, that could be an option? I dunno.

deezcashews , in "Failed to retrieve Redgif video" error

It's the app, the same thing happened to sync a while back

{"error":{"code":"FileAccessDenied","message":"Access to this file was denied for your application.","status":403,"rtfm":"https://github.com/Redgifs/api/wiki/Embedding-gifs#file-access"},"docs":"https://github.com/Redgifs/api/wiki/Embedding-gifs#file-access"}

Please_Do_Not OP ,

Did they manage a fix?

deezcashews ,

The last update was 4 months ago so no lol

morphballganon , in "Failed to retrieve Redgif video" error

My browser also fails to open them, unless I make the following change:

NSFW WARNING!

Original link example: https://api.redgifs.com/v2/gifs/mediumaquamarinecharmingtahr/files/MediumaquamarineCharmingTahr-silent.mp4

Becomes: https://redgifs.com/ifr/mediumaquamarinecharmingtahr/

(Please forgive including NSFW link to demonstrate link modification)

There are 3 changes to the link: remove api, replace first two subdirectories with ifr, and remove last two items

Wanted to share in case anyone else has the same difficulty

Hikermick OP , in sometimes when I click on a post that is an image, I see the image briefly then it dissappear and this replaces it

Android phone. No updates for Connect pending

YourPrivatHater , in sometimes when I click on a post that is an image, I see the image briefly then it dissappear and this replaces it
@YourPrivatHater@ani.social avatar

Open it external, when this happens the image is either deleted or in some weird weird format its basically the image 404

Hikermick OP ,

Yeah that's what I've been doing. Thank you

YourPrivatHater ,
@YourPrivatHater@ani.social avatar

The image you get to see is a preview saved on your instance (just so you know)

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

It's weird that using other apps this doesn't happen, only on connect.

YourPrivatHater ,
@YourPrivatHater@ani.social avatar

Do the other apps just display you the preview? Cause when the image source is deleted, its not there.

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Not sure. I know in connect the information is there and sharp enough as i sometimes back-and-forth to read elements of a meme. If that snapshot is there, why not serve it up and have it linger if it detects a deleted image?

YourPrivatHater ,
@YourPrivatHater@ani.social avatar

Probably possible but most want to see the full image not the small one, especially for art

Akasazh ,
@Akasazh@feddit.nl avatar

Ideally, yea. But for simple memes the smaller one is fine. It's so teasing to see a glimps of it and then it going black

YourPrivatHater ,
@YourPrivatHater@ani.social avatar

I don't think its possible to have both options.

Tlaloc_Temporal ,

This has been a thing in Boost for at least 5 years. The preview is cached, but pulling the full image fails.
