@andrew_s@piefed.social avatar

Congrats. Tesseract has always been very impressive.

This post suggests there's a problem with Lemmy/PeerTube federation, but it'll be good to see the videos embedded (even if they have to be brought through manually)

ptz OP , (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Thanks!

Interesting about the broken Peertube federation. I'm following a few channels (mostly for testing purposes) and I did get new posts to them from PT's side and saw my votes reflected on each end. Haven't gone back and done any comparison's lately, though. That post says it hasn't worked in ~3 months. If it's a Lemmy issue, It's possible that it works for me since my instance is still on 0.18.5? If something changed with Peertube, then I may have just not noticed. Will check on that when I have some time as I'm now curious.

Update: Seems the ones I got were just from the initial fetch.

Update #2: A new PT video came through this morning on one of the channels I follow. So maybe federation does work but is just wonky/inconsistent? Again, I'm still on 0.18.5 so may have something to do with it.

Regardless, yeah, like you said, they'll still embed when brought over manually.

Also, I've been watching The Good Place and completely read your comment in Jason's voice. Hope that's okay. 😆

Thank you for the update

You mean "arbitrary", not "random" right?

I don't see how a randomly chose picture from reddit would be something the user would likely be interested in.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

Mhm, maybe?

It fetches x amount of post (sorted by new, top, hot or rising, user choice) from a user specified subreddit, and from all of these results it takes one post at random and shows it to the user. So it's random, kind of.. it probably could use better wording for sure

ericjmorey ,

That makes more sense than my initial interpretation, but why the random aspect at all?

TrickDacy , in Reddy is out! You can install it from Flathub now

This is a GUI app that works on wsl?? Didn't know that was a thing

mjhelto ,

I knew Microsoft was working toward it and hinting that it was coming, but didn't think it would be available this soon!

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

It's been available soince WSL 2 I believe (or maybe just a few revision later) I tested some of my app on WSL on Windows 11 and they appear to work great. Maybe not every app can be run, though

kautau ,

Yeah a whole bunch of apps work on my WSL setup

…I use Arch, btw

ARCH BTW!

This is for anyone wondering how to get Arch on WSL: https://github.com/yuk7/ArchWSL

Hello,

Thank you for this! I just installed it, currently investigating how to get an API token (it seems that now you need to register?)

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

You need a reddit account to create an API key, I believe this has always been the case

Blaze ,
@Blaze@reddthat.com avatar

Yes, I managed to make it work!

Mr_Mofu , in Reddy is out! You can install it from Flathub now

Glad to see something like this having become a thing! I'll look forward to giving this one to some of my friends who could use that

Awesome! If they have feedback about it, let me know

If possible, set a requirement for the lemmy account to be marked as a bot.

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

It is possible, but I don't think I'll do that, because I also use this app on my main account for stuff that I find funny, cool, beautiful and more. And if it gets comment I'll answer them and keep the community aspect of everything. At the end of the day, this comes down to what the use wants to do with the app.

However, I could add a disclaimer that if the user only post with this app and nothing else, its account should be marked as bot, but I do not want to make that mandatory.

We'll see in the future if the app gets used and how it might affect content here!

Thanks for your comment!

I really want Lemmy to be good to use and have good content.

Thanks for you comment, and I totally agree, especially for Mysteries community, I wish we had some on here, some ARG communitys etc.. not clone of reddit posts for these, because you wouldn't be able to be part of it truly, I just wish those community would come over on Lemmy.

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

not clone of reddit posts for these, because you wouldn’t be able to be part of it truly, I just wish those community would come over on Lemmy.

It's a little bit of a Catch-22 though. They're not going to come over unless the content they're used to is already here. That's why you need the cloning.

And just wishing for it ain't going to be enough. Once the content is cloned here on Lemmy, Lemmy users can run with it from there, and they can actually contribute to the cloned content on the Lemmy side, so it's still a win-win.

Yes that's true, every Fediverse platform is a more or less the same, poeple don't want to come because there's not enough content, so there is not enough content, and the cycle repeat itself...

Wishing won't ever help that's true, but I'm doing my part in the best way I can! I believe there are already bots that can replicate reddit posts and answer, I've seen one of these around, I don't remember which one tho...

You're doing good, TY for contributing.

FYI, while I am responding to you directly, I'm also 'Speaking to the Choir' as in may, as there's usually a negative pushback to cloning Reddit content onto Lemmy.

I always just assume it's Reddit bots trying not to lose the only advantage they have, the content they already hold/contain.

But it also could just be Lemmy users who only want a 'pure' experience, and 'larger population / market share' and success be damned.

threelonmusketeers ,

there's usually a negative pushback to cloning Reddit content onto Lemmy.

Bots have their utility, but should be treated with caution, as they have the risk of flooding small communities with posts which garner zero comments. It might be a good idea to aim for no more than 50% of posts (on average) being from bots.

@Krafting, would there be a way to incorporate some form of rate-limiting based on the level of human activity in the community?

Krafting OP ,
@Krafting@lemmy.world avatar

See : https://lemmy.world/comment/9863709

Also, rate limiting should be implemented at the lemmy server level (if someone wanted to flood/spam a community he could write a simple script that post 1000 post per seconds easily)

Plus there are already real bot software that repost reddit content without human approbation, this app doesn't repost automatically without the user input.

But I totally understand this concern. And I'll see if this app gets abused or anything that might deteriorate our Lemmy experience.

@ericbandrews@lemmy.ml avatar

Mlem has this feature planned--we have a clear path towards implementation, but there's a lot of groundwork and design to do first so it probably won't be delivered for at least several months.

Blaze , in Old Apps Discussion thread
@Blaze@dormi.zone avatar

I guess if an app does not support the latest version of Lemmy it can be considered as "old" or at least "non-current", as Lemmy devs make sure to announce API changes in advance.

Probably having that information about them would be nice. Depends how much maintenance it is for you to update the megathread if someone updates the app and it becomes "current" again

Blaze ,
@Blaze@reddthat.com avatar

Hello,

Coming back with a very specific request: would it be possible to show which apps support cross-posts and moderation tools?

aciodev OP ,

Hello! I just included "Cross post" as a filter on the website. To show apps that support Cross-Posting or Mod log (tools), deselect the other filters under the "Features" column.

I am planning a front-end rewrite in React or another UI framework to be more reactive and modern. If you have any suggestions, I am all ears. Thank you!

Blaze ,
@Blaze@reddthat.com avatar

By the way, someone just told me that apparently now Thunder support crossposts!

aciodev OP ,

Ah, thank you! I updated Thunder to reflect this new feature.
