From the article...

But while many think that YouTube's system isn't great, Trendacosta also said that she "can't think of a way to build the match technology" to improve it, because "machines cannot tell context." Perhaps if YouTube's matching technology triggered a human review each time, "that might be tenable," but "they would have to hire so many more people to do it."

That's what it comes down to, right there.

Google needs to spend money on people, and not just rely on the AI automation, because it's obviously getting things wrong, its not judging context correctly.

There is a dude (or maybe more than one) that in all his comments he has an anti AI flair, or something like that,

I wonder who they are? 😜

For the record, I'm not the only one, nor the first one, to do it. I saw someone else do it, and decided to adopt it for myself as well. I'm aware of three people (and one large company) who are currently licensing their content here on Lemmy.

I wonder if that would have any effect.

One way to find out. It's an easy enough piece of text to put into your comments...

yeah…its just surreal. I grew up when there was no Internet at all. Now we have bots mining data from a website to get more human-like responses (and more $$). Its a strange world.

Almost makes it useless to bother posting on online forums anymore, if you end up just wasting your time talking to an AI bot, instead of another human.

Which is a weird way lets the 1% win. If the rest of us can't converse with each other because the 'virtual town square' becomes so polluted that meaningful conversation with other humans cannot happen.

I’m a large language model and still learning.

How do you feel about this proposed rule passing, and how it affects you? ...

Reporting Certain Large AI Model Training

In an effort to secure the development and use of artificial intelligence (“AI”), the proposed rule requires U.S. IaaS providers and their foreign resellers to report known instances of foreign persons training “large AI models with potential capabilities that could be used in malicious cyber-enabled activity” to Commerce.

Personally I suggest Fedora with KDE.

It has a great update cadence time frame, and good hardware support (indirectly backed by IBM). And games really well in Steam/Proton.

That'll get you the most Windows like experience on Linux, for an average user who doesn't like to tinker much and just wants it to work out of the box.

Just make sure to accept third party libraries / apps when you first install. It's a single checkbox that you click.

What is the Legal copyright on a Lemmy Post?

Most instances don't have a specific copyright in their ToS, which is basically how copyright is handled on corporate social media (Meta/X/Reddit owns license rights to whatever you post on their platform when you click "Agree"). I've noticed some people including Copyright notices in posts (mostly to prevent AI use). Is this...

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

Copyright is more than that, like who is allowed to make commercial use of a given work. Just because something is written down in a public forum doesn’t give everyone free rein to do whatever they want with it under copyright.

This.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

If someone includes it at the bottom of all their comments, but never launches legal action when someone violates that licence agreement, then it’s literally useless.

Well, its 'poisoning the well'. What happens next depends.

For AI companies that actually honor licensing, or are fearful of getting caught at some point, they'll honor/follow the license for the content.

And for those who do not, if they get caught with their hands in the cookie jar, Creative Commons (and other license creators) will have something to say about it. And they will get caught, we all know about black-box programming their models from the outside via our comments.

Finally, Congress right this second is considering new laws about this, so you never know. Companies in the future may be forced to have to explicitly state where the content comes from that they train their AI models on.

As far as wasting my time, all I do is copy/paste this one line of text via a macro keypress ...

Ah well then I might try and find a license that doesn’t require attribution because I don’t care about that part.

I would argue attribution is also really important, as it forces them to expose publicly how they're training their models, bringing awareness.

The point you felt was worth making a week later

Again, five days ago. Some people like myself stumble upon a post/comment days and days later from when its initially posted.

is that I am free to block someone who does something I find kind of annoying?

Yeah, for some reason people who complain about me using a license seem to keep forgetting that option, but instead just continue to complain, for some strange reason, no matter how many times I remind them of that option. Thought it was a good PSA to remind the complainers they they have alternatives to complaining.

That seems a little extreme to me.

If that seems extreme to you, then you need to touch grass more often.

Extreme would be continuing to complain about something that you have the power to change, but don't change.

From the article ...

Thwaites, which already contributes 4% to global sea level rise, holds enough ice to raise sea levels by more than 2 feet. But because it also acts as a natural dam to the surrounding ice in West Antarctica, scientists have estimated its complete collapse could ultimately lead to around 10 feet of sea level rise — a catastrophe for the world’s coastal communities.

That's a lot of beachfront and riverside properties that would end up going underwater.

I think it will be impossible for us to asses how much it actually impacts function in real world use case.

Does seem fair though to say that if you have 85% less data input/probes, that you're losing some to a large amount of fidelity, than an algorithm can only make up so much for.

A potentionally bad analogy, but think of it as a high bitrate versus a low bitrate, for listening to music. The quality of the music will be notably different, but you would still be able to hear both of the songs in their entirety.

At the end of the day, it's a lack of data that was originally expected for the algorithm to work with, that is now missing.

How do you cope with, life and the decaying world around you?

Decay is a constant. But so is renewal. If you remember that, then that gets you through your life experiences.

Mine is nostalgia. That’s literally my copium drug and it really is strong some days.

Nostalgia is great, especially in helping you remember the past. But you shouldn't focus exclusively on that, as then it just becomes a drug, and you become the monkey in the cage pushing the button over and over again for the next pellet of food.

Only thing we’re missing is for greedy politicians to get out of the pockets of the fossil fuel industries so that the transition can happen in earnest.

Not saying that you're wrong at all, but there's also the issue of completely replacing our infrastructure to support the new technologies, and the costs involved in doing that.

Well if the license is flagrantly ignored I'm sure Creative Commons would probably have something to say about it.

Having said that, I meant for you to also go to the top of that link conversation to read everything that's been discussed, including my answer to the question you just asked.

“old lady” absolutely is slang for wife.

I know it exists, but I've never used it.

Also, I was just being more humorous, than literal, hence the toilet seat comment.

Being serious for a moment, IMO, it sends one hell of a negative signal to your significant other, to your dissatisfaction of them, which I've never felt for my own wife.

Edit: ...

And for those of you who may disagree with me, ask yourself this. Is your wife actually okay with you using that slang, or do they just act like they're okay, but inside it bothers them? Do they see it as a term of endearment, or as a reminder of reality?

Reminding your wife that she's old, even playfully, may not be something she wants to hear.

And generally speaking, women seem to care more about aging than men do. That's why when someone asks you how old your wife is, when she is in earshot, you always say 18, or at the very least 21! 😜

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,

Toilet seat belongs down - and the lid with it! It’s not only logical, but also just.

The thing is, at least in our household, the lid has to stay up.

I actually thought as you do, as that would be a perfect compromise, both parties would have to work to use the toilet.

But from what I'm told, is the late night half asleep moments where you forget to put the seat down, and you fall down into the toilet, that is being prevented by making sure the seats always down and the lid is always up.

It's a low hanging fruit way of maritial bliss, so I go with it.

Maybe I’m not understanding you but lid down is a foolproof way to not fall in from my perspective.

My wife always forgets when she gets up in the middle of the night, and falls in, or sits on the lid and has to get up and put the lit up and seat down herself.

So she asks me to always make sure to put the seat down for her, something that I'm happy to do, as a happy wife is a happy life.

Lid down so the flush spray is mostly contained is enough reason, no?

So you can have the lid down while seat is up? Then what you said before makes much more sense. Though not sure what purpose this feature brings. Or how that would even lool like, never seen anything like that.

Are you trying to be purposely obtuse, or intellectually dishonest?

Or are you trying to let me know I have a typo somewhere in one of my earlier comments, without actually explicitly saying so?

You said your lid and seat are totally independent - suggesting you can leave the seat up but close the lid.

I believe that's an interpretation mistake on your part (the italicized part).

I was responding in disagreement to your comment about how both of them have to both be up together, or both down together, to actually use the toilet.
