Rofi is a window switcher, run dialog and dmenu replacement.

So that means that with a keyboard shortcut a menu will pop up where you can either start typing and it will do suggestions for you, or you click on what is already available. It's nice for people who prefer to not do too many mouse clicking (think : RSI).

Insightful point. And it does remind me of the corporate purchase of the Don't care about cookies extension for Firefox (And the Simple Mobile Tools for Android). Luckily it was forked. https://github.com/OhMyGuus/I-Still-Dont-Care-About-Cookies Open source FTW!
🙂 🐧

Kind of agree. Though there is pi-hole and several others. And there's i2p, Freenet (now called Hyphanet) and GNUnet, and similar.

kdeltachat - DeltaChat desktop client built with Kirigami ( git.sr.ht )

This is DeltaChat desktop client but not with the default Electron. Compile instructions for Debian, Arch Linux and openSUSE. One Linux distribution has this packaged : NixOS, package name kdeltachat-unstable. The software developer is also active in the DeltaChat forum. Posting this here to give this project some more attention...

lemmyreader OP ,

I've compiled kdeltachat yesterday and it is different from the default Electron based Deltachat desktop app. At startup it immediately shows a big configuration screen inviting the user to fill in email address, SMTP port and a lot more text fields. The default Deltachat app looks polished and much nicer for "normies". Ignoring and closing that configuration part and it looks like a simple Qt app without much colors so I guess it the app is a work in progress. Maybe I'll provide some screen shots later.

The need for a Fedi Union.

tl;dr I propose a Fedi Union consisting of the developers of Phanpy, Pixelfed, Peertube, Lemmy, and PieFed. That will work as a way to fund all of the services collectively (with the option to still go to their individual patreons and fund them seperately) and as a way for them to communicate to help all the services be more...

No, Mastodon Social, the flag-ship has not blocked Facebook's Threads. And Gargron is very happy with that. Imagine being the main developer letting your flagship instance turn into a huge "silo" and then happy that a corporate privacy invading giant federates with your instance :/

Easily find program name from context menu/without terminal?

I occasionally need to know the names of programs. I asked here about "Run as Administrator" being added to the context menu (like in Windows), and the response was basically "can't be easily done". an example is if I wish to edit a config file it cannot be done without accessing the terminal. Knowing the name "gedit" is the...

With ubuntu default options, “Text Editor” (in the GUI menu), is “gedit” for example.
“File Browser” is “Nautilus”. These things are actually not easy to learn if you aren’t
deep into the Linux world.

Agreed. That is unfortunately the way GNOME Desktop Environment has been going since years. For example Epiphany web browser is now known as "Web". Not only that, GNOME started to remove window buttons like Maximize. With GNOME tweaks tool these window buttons can be enabled again, but I personally don't find the GNOME changes a huge improvement.

Go to hell Mozilla. I couldn’t care less if your browser fails at this point.

I share this sentiment to some point. Mozilla taking millions from Google, and making it difficult for users to DeGoogle or remove the sponsored shortcuts from their Firefox browser. But hard forking Firefox will not be a light weight task for a new project to take on for a long time.
I hope the stronger pushing of ads by Google in the Chrome/Chromium browser will make some more people switch back to Firefox.

lemmyreader ,

I dont think Mozilla makes degoogling hard. It is very easy to keep track of the changes and simply flip some switches.

Some switched ? Have you checked all the connections a Firefox browser makes ? In case you didn't know Mozilla push notifications is hosted on a Google server.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment Firm will be Banned from Disclosing Health Data for Advertising to Settle FTC Charges that It Shared Data Without Consent ( www.ftc.gov )

According to the complaint, the company contradicted its privacy promises. From 2020-2022, the company allegedly disclosed users’ personal information, including their health information, to numerous third-party advertising platforms via tracking technologies, known as pixels and application programming interfaces (APIs),...
