Besides Shakespeare, were you assigned more than one book by the same author in school? K-12, not college. @bookstodon

@albnelson @bookstodon Yeah my school had us reading at least one book by John Steinbeck per year. It got a bit old. But I still like Steinbeck.

BANG UP. (WHIP.) Quite the thing, hellish fine. Well done. Compleat. Dashing. In a handsome stile. A bang up cove; a dashing fellow who spends his money freely. To bang up prime: to bring your horses up in a dashing or fine style.

A selection from Francis Grose’s “Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue” (1785)

I've got some audiobook credits before I cancel my account (just not worth it when the is there 🥰). Could someone recommend some good audiobooks?

    What I am looking for:
    ✔️Cozy mysteries or cozy horror
✔️If romance, nothing 🌶️ because I can't listen to sex scenes being narrated to me without giggling like a middle schooler.
    ✔️Female main character = bonus
    ✔️POC protagonist = bonus
✔️YA or New Adult recs okay

    Thanks! 🙏🏽

@himantra @bookstodon @horror I highly recommend "The Golem and the Jinni" by Helene Wecker. It's cozy romantic fantasy/mystery with touches of horror. Is it about a golem and a jinni (genie)? Yes! But they're in NYC circa 1900. The sequel is also delightful.

My heart aches for the children who will no longer have access to their local library because some arrogant assholes decided to be offended by books with new ideas and different perspectives.

    The cruelty is the point.

(Some) ignorant leftbros: "Class first! No idpol!"

Scholars of right wing politics/economics: "All these right-wing thinkers are much more comfortable thinking about the blurred lines between sexual and economic politics than many thinkers on the left. And they understand that Keynesianism rests on a certain kind of sexual contract. Any challenge to this order—whether it be an escalation of wage or benefit claims, or the flight from sexual normativity, or unmarried women claiming welfare benefits—disrupts the fiscal and monetary calculus on which Keynesianism rests."

Above remark from "The Extravagances of Neoliberalism", an interview of Melinda Cooper (author of "Counterrevolution: Extravagance and Austerity in Public Finance") by Benjamin Kunkel, in The Baffler.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

@Jennifer @bookstodon I'm almost finished with Sarah Gailey's "The Mirror Wife" and it's blowing my mind! Scifi/horror really but with a strong feminist focus. Can't wait to see if my suspicions about the MC's clone are confirmed.

Since people are talking about Kent State, Ohio, 1970, it's a good time to talk about Jackson State, Mississippi, 1970.

Similar situation, except there was no active protest, just a bunch of students hanging out. The mayor of Jackson declared a riot and called in the pigs. Someone threw a glass bottle, not at the pigs, but they still opened fire. Phillip Gibbs, a student at Jackson State, and James Green, a high school student who was walking home from his job, were murdered by cops. Many others were wounded.

Sepia-toned photo of a couple in a casual seated pose, looking towards the camera. She is on the left, nearly sitting on his lap, smiling, wearing a dark knee-length dress with buttons up the front and a wide collar, holding a white purse. Her hair is straight, shoulder-length, curled at the end, with bangs. He is wearing light-colored slacks and a boldly patterned shirt, like a Hawaiian shirt, and has his arm around his wife. His hair is short and his expression is more curious than friendly.
