What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

Not really, no. Generational ships might make colonizing the nearest star systems possible, but even colonizing our own galaxy would require some kind of suspended animation. The milky way is between 100,000-200,000 light years in diameter so even at the speed of light, you're looking at a travel time that is ~33-66% of the time that humanity has even existed(homo sapiens are currently estimated to have become a distinct species 200,000-300,000 years ago)... just to go to ONE star system out of the hundreds of BILLIONS that exist in our galaxy. You're gonna need generational ships so self-sustaining and capable that the generation that actually arrives at the destination will have long forgotten the point of the trip and might not want to leave the comfort of the ship.

Still, colonizing our own galaxy is at least theoretically possible, given enough time. The real filter is just how unimaginably large the universe is. The vast, VAST majority of the observable universe is FOREVER out of our reach, as it is expanding away from us faster than the speed of light. Then there's the unobservable universe, which could literally be infinitely bigger than the observable universe for all we actually know.

Perfide ,

There doesn't need to be more to it than that. The observable universe is over 93 billion light years in diameter. That means even at the speed of light, it would take over 6.5x longer than the universe has even existed for anything to cross that distance... except the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light, so actually you need to go significantly faster than light to make it across. FTL is, sadly, still firmly in the realm of science fiction, so to the best of our current knowledge most of the universe is permanently inaccessible.

Perfide ,

Sure, that's an option. It doesn't really change my overall point though that anything beyond galactic colonization is unrealistic on any time scale. Our next nearest neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, is over 2.5 MILLION light years away, over 10 times farther than my "crossing the milky way" example, with nothing in-between to make a pit stop if needed, you have to cross the true void of space to get there.

And that's just to get the next nearest galaxy. Current estimates suggest the observable universe contains 2 TRILLION galaxies.

What is the benefit of closing Studios? Why not sell them?

Yes, this is in relation to the closing of Tango Gameworks and Arcane Austin. Is there some immediate monetary benefit behind it that I have no idea about? Is it so they can keep the IPs and not have to deal with the developers? Are the Studios too expensive for anyone to buy? I honestly don't understand how these executives...

Perfide ,

Who would want to buy them? The only value a studio has without it's IP is the devs, and you don't need to buy the studio to acquire them.

Shell sold millions of carbon credits for carbon that was never captured, report finds ( www.cbc.ca )

Shell sold millions of carbon credits for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that never happened, allowing the company to turn a profit on its fledgling carbon capture and storage project, according to a new report by Greenpeace Canada....

Perfide ,

No, you can't. There are trillions of trees on earth and the impact they have on carbon emissions is relatively minimal, planting a forest or even many forests isn't going to cut it.

Not to mention that for trees to be an at all viable long term carbon capture method, you can't ever cut those trees down. If we can't leave the fucking Amazon alone, what makes you think we won't chop up that artificial forest in 50 years?

This is the same issue with kelp. Kelp has a ton of uses, and is an even better carbon sink than trees are, but to be a carbon sink you have to forgo all of those other uses because you have to literally sink the kelp to the bottom of the ocean and leave it there, because actually using it for anything just rereleases the carbon.

Perfide ,

Not practically. You'd have to be replacing the trees faster than you chop them down just to account for the energy(and thus carbon) used to chop them and process them. Then there's the fact that decomposition will also release the carbon, so you HAVE to use the lumber for stuff that is intended to last at least as long the tree grew, or else that tree is still a net negative.

If it takes over the video it would be. I pause YT videos all the time to read something that didn't stay on screen long enough.

He should've just looked after himself... I'm guessing the app would've punished him

Unfortunately, that is a possibility. I used to doordash, canceling an order before you pick up the food is NBD, but canceling after you have picked it up is likely at least a strike against the dashers account.

Perfide ,

So your whole point is a slippery slope fallacy. Gotcha.

Perfide ,

A culturally relevant joke at our expense that still has class? See guys, it IS possible. You, in fact, CAN make fun of America without going "lol your children get shot lol".

Perfide ,

Okay, but you do realize that comeback makes you look bad right, not us? No matter your reasons or intentions, you are mocking children being murdered. Like in the example below:

American: lol British people eat spotted dicks.

A brit: lol American children get shot at school.

Wow. What a zinger, you really got me with that one, a fool I was to not recognize the comedy of children dying horrifically.

(To be clear, I didn't come up with that example randomly. I've seen the mocking of spotted dick be met with "lol child murder" more than once)

Perfide ,

What do you want me to do? Wave my hands and say some magic words and presto have everything be fixed? It doesn't fucking work that way.

I do what I can within my means. I vote every election for candidates supporting gun and mental healthcare reforms, I do my best to educate my less politically aware friends, I support activist organizations, etc... I'm fucking sorry if I'm not personally out there torching politicians houses or whatever the fuck you expect me to do, but I've got people that depend on me not being in fucking prison.

Perfide ,

I still don't buy it. I've had shits where I feel like I'm about to pop a blood vessel and still don't feel a need to vocalize it. My brother has severe IBS and shitting is basically torture for him the way he tells it, still never hear any yelling coming from the bathroom.
