A lot of people worldbuild when they daydream and have the bones of a story kicking around in their brain, but have to pay the bills and raise the kids etc so they never flesh it out and write it down. What's your story's premise? Fantasy, sci-fi, alternate history, mystery, western, whatever genre.
I'd love to write a really good acid western. So far all I have are daydreams about being a badass old west drifter to the music of Spindrift.
Edit: I suppose there's also what I started when I tried (and failed) NaNoWriMo, which was a horror story about a pathogen that made people deranged killers of a spectacular nature. There was a fight in a stained glass factory, that was kinda cool. Should see if the laptop with the draft still boots...
(If I recall the movie correctly, it was basically The Crazies, but more violent and written before the 2010 version came out [never saw the 1973 version])
There's something good here - if anyone takes this up leave a link or something for us other folks to check out, too.
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about fleshing this out: who/what made the train station? Given it's a place people stay only for a short amount of time before being whisked off to their afterlife, what does the MC learn staying there for so much longer?
Do it! Unless you have kids, don't stop, don't second guess, don't think of any of the reasons you shouldn't, just get. in. the. fucking. car. and. GO!
(a little tongue in cheek, perhaps, but it's a massive country that's more than a little wild, and too many people don't explore it like they should. Seriously, go for an adventure at the first opportunity - life's short).
Thing is, it's not that uncommon to do this, and it's not like the cashier is going to report you as suspicious to the relevant tax authority. Sometimes people don't have the full value for groceries in their bank account, or are right at the tip of their credit limit - but do have cash on hand to cover the rest.
The point is to have a paper trail/transaction history of lesser value for the tax man. Two transactions in one visit is just as valid as two different visits using different payment methods.
Comes down to whether you feel awkward doing the first one I guess (cashiers generally won't think twice about it, aside from maybe mild annoyance). It is a classic "Things aren't going great for me rn" move - but who cares, you know the truth.
It's been difficult to broach the subject and explain the technical concepts to the average person. I did have some success in first sharing the email comparison, which lead into interoperability....
Don't fret - yet. At this point this is just some asshole at the National Post stating a dumbass opinion in light of discussions in the UK.
Let's see what happens after 2025, though...I do know the CF has a very real recruitment problem right now. I have mixed feelings about the military, but I'm truly hoping conscription isn't the road they go down versus, oh IDK, effectively dealing with sexual assault in the ranks and paying soliders a good enough wage that they don't need to use food banks while training in urban centres - at minimum.
Which one pops to mind first, even if it's not the most fucked up one you've come across? Alternatively, any of the options have a published English translation (though I imagine these'd probably be the tamer of the bunch)?
It is if you focus on the ultimate end state, which is a very serious net human good.
But jesus, the path to making that happen can grind you down. Canyon-like process gaps in some areas, poor integration of the different business lines, every area has been short-staffed since the pandemic with no end in sight, taking on more work without an appropriate allocation of resources, etc.
Have said "Fuck this, I quit" to myself more than once, only to come back because my memory of times where I was involved in something positively life changing for some random human in my country.
What's the story you would write if you were an author?
