‘What’s happening is not genocide’: #Biden criticizes #ICC for seeking arrest warrants for #Israel officials – as it happened
[Live blog for May 20 - now closed, but still available]
Outlook is pro-Israel (no surprise), but has many quotes of reactions from [#Israeli politicians and experts about the ICC prosecutor's request for arrest warrants.]
It's not going to happen, but it's a step towards the right direction.
Judging by the way #ICC charged #Hamas, every ranking military serving in Gaza to be charged with #WarCrimes, just like they did with those in #Bosnia and #Rwandan.
But sadly, just #Netanyahu and #Gantz were those they could dare charging.
The #ICC can issue for signatories countries an arrest warrant on #Netanyahu because it has jurisdiction over international crimes committed in #Palestine since 2012
BUT
If #Israel doesn't recognise the #ICC, its territory isn't included in the jurisdiction, and the crimes of Hamas where carried out there, then how can the #ICC issue a legally binding arrest warrant on Hamas leaders?

[cont’d] Let Justice in the Gaza War Take Its Course (David Kaye)
Kaye says that the #ICC has jurisdiction over international crimes committed in Palestine since 2012, when the court's territorial jurisdiction was expanded to include the territory occupied by Israel.
[…] Regardless of the outcome of the cases, the prosecutor’s request that the court issue arrest warrants for #Netanyahu and #Sinwar helps cut through the polarizing language of the moment and promotes the idea that the basic rules of international humanitarian law apply to all. Anyone demanding an end to the conflict in Gaza and the release of all hostages from the grasp of Hamas should embrace the decision.
[…] There is a global cost to opposing the International Criminal Court. With U.S. and European support, the court is seeking to prosecute President Vladimir #Putin for alleged crimes in Ukraine. The court promotes the global interest in accountability for the worst crimes under international law. Attacks on it only benefit those who, like Mr. Putin, seek to delegitimize its existence.
The international criminal court is an almost-powerless body that doesn't prosecute white people anywhere near the rate in which it does people of colour.
and yet, hell fucking yeah. that is very much the correct choice. I hope (though it is very unlikely to actuality happen) that all five stand trial for their crimes.
Leading the lemmings to a collective suicide, Netanyahu says an #ICC ruling will not stop him.
Netanyahu on the Warrant: An Outrage; It Won't Stop Us
#Netanyahu addressed the decision of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague to request arrest warrants against him and Defense Minister Gallant at the #Likud faction meeting, and called the move an "outrage." Netanyahu told his party members that "this won't stop me or stop us."
#ICC / Prosecutor asks for arrest warrants for three leading Hamas leaders, as well ass Netanyahu and Galant
[...] The office of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on Monday said it was seeking arrest warrants against three leading Hamas militants for their alleged roles in the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Watch: ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan explains the charges against top Hamas and Israeli leadership in detail in this excerpt from his interview with @amanpour this morning at The Hague
[cont'd] Why we support ICC prosecutions for crimes in Israel and Gaza

A unanimous legal rationale for supporting the #ICC prosecutor's pursuit of war crimes charges against both Palestinian and Israeli leaders, based on an assessment of evidence against international law standards.

The charges are not about the reasons for the conflict itself, but rather the manner in which the war was waged in violation of international laws governing armed conflicts.
[cont'd] France backs 'independence' of ICC after prosecutor seeks arrest warrants for Israel, Hamas leaders
France states it will be up to the #ICC's pre-trial chamber to decide whether to actually issue the requested arrest warrants after examining the prosecutor's evidence. This contrasts with the stance of the US, where President Joe Biden called the legal step against Israeli officials "outrageous."

[cont'd] Sanders Statement on ICC Seeking Arrest Warrants for Israeli and Hamas Leaders
[...] The #ICC prosecutor is right to take these actions. These arrest warrants may or may not be carried out, but it is imperative that the global community uphold international law. Without these standards of decency and morality, this planet may rapidly descend into anarchy, never-ending wars, and barbarism.
[cont'd] Ynet is citing "sources" claiming efforts between Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress, emboldened by stern statements from President Biden and Secretary Blinken, to rapidly advance bipartisan "lightning" legislation that would impose sanctions on the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (#ICC) in The Hague, Karim Khan, and others involved in the investigation into Israel's activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The proposed sanctions reportedly include bans on entry to the U.S., closure of bank accounts, and the consideration of extending these punitive measures to even family members of those targeted.
According to Ynet's sources, the U.S. is seeking to deter the ICC from issuing arrest warrants against Israeli officials through this expedited legislation, hence the urgency to approve it soon. However, "there are concerns" that the legislation could stall due to "unrelated political considerations in Congress."
