Can Alzheimer’s Disease Be Reversed with a Plant-Based Diet?
Continued...
"Then, he showed the same plant-based program could potentially reverse the course of early-stage prostate cancer and elongate our telomeres, suggesting an anti-aging effect as well. But when he told me he was going to try to reverse Alzheimer’s disease, I was skeptical. Surely, he was biting off a little more than he could chew." For the first time, a randomized controlled clinical trial has demonstrated that an intensive lifestyle intervention, without drugs, may significantly improve cognition and function in many patients with mild cognitive impairment or early dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. This multisite clinical study is published in the leading peer-reviewed Alzheimer’s translational research journal, Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy.
@EllieK@wfpb@vegan A study with fifty people is just an indication that more research should be done.
There's also stuff like: "if your plant-based diet is strictly vegan or strict vegetarian you may be missing out on this essential dementia-fighting nutrient: Choline."
In purely anecdotal evidence, it reversed my own early cognitive decline, which I absolutely was not expecting. It took 2 years, but there is no question that's what did it. I followed a strictly whole foods plant based diet. Plenty of nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, veggies and legumes.
@EllieK
"A whole foods minimally-processed plant-based (vegan)
diet.." - very interesting study.
Maybe #vegan nutrition helps to avoid #dementia in advance too.
Thanks for shareing!
@Fripi @CStamp @werawelt
It costs nothing to test it on a personal level. I know. I saw the results in myself.
The big issue with this study is the threat to industry.
Follow the money. What corporation stands to gain if this simple change works? Big Pharma? Nope. The lucrative supplement industry? Nope. Maybe B12, but everyone should take that anyway.
Who stands to lose? Big pharma, the meat and dairy industries and the faddy health gimmicks touters. @wfpb@vegan
@EllieK
This is a simpliciativ world view. First.of all, I am actually vegan.
Second, anecdotal evidence is no evidence. That is where studies help, Thai study does not say mich as explained before.
If you prefer conspiracy, go for it. But neither food industry nor "Pharma" would be much phased by this study, even if there was more evidence to it.
And if that is your level,.are you sure.it is not rigged by the B12 supplement Industry? This is bonkers.
@EllieK
The study for sure is neither needed to tell everyone to eat healthy and to change.to a mainly plant based diet, that is already known to be better.
That random supplements are a scam is also proven over and over again. No worth there.
This study just proves that a multi level intervention can benefit Alzheimer's patients - short term. If it how much the vegan diet contributed is not even checked.
@Fripi@EllieK@werawelt@wfpb@vegan With regards to diets associated with longer, healthier life, the Mediterranean Diet seems to be consistently leading the way, with lots of science backing up the claim. This does emphasize healthy fats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds. And, no, unless you have a diet deficient in something, you don't need vitamins, B12 or otherwise.
@CStamp
This diet includes fish and poultry, that is why there is no B12 needed.
But also I can't find a study that would support your claim, can you point out any good quality evidence? All studies I looked at were basically not able to make such statements based on the design.
The comparison in two groups with about 25 patients each is just that an intervention will help in the rather short time span of 20 weeks - as opposed to no intervention.
This stuff demonstrates that it is worth looking into it, especially which of these interventions are actually working well. It is very likely that vegan diet is contributing much, it is likely that a healthy balanced diet would be sufficient while being much more simple to adhere to.
@EllieK@wfpb@vegan I believe it it total lifestyle changes one has to make from diet to exercise and how you make use of the mind as one ages ... I myself found ..
