Are they going to integrate mastodon instead?

AeonFelis ,

No. They'll integrate with Threads.

Etterra ,

It took them this long? Impressive. Idiotic, but still impressive.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

They probably just waited for the contracts to end hehe :')

ohwhatfollyisman ,

what have they replaced the X button on their controllers with, then?

Gestrid ,

PlayStation doesn't have an X button, it has a Cross button. /j

TORFdot0 ,

They all have ways to send screenshots to the mobile apps if I’m not mistaken and with Twitter jacking up API prices since Elon took over, it makes perfect sense just to discontinue support

Shardikprime ,

I mean 50k per license por console seems insane

njm1314 ,

Good. Frankly at this point if you're still on on Twitter I think it's suspicious.

blindbunny ,

Long past that point... If your not on mastodon I don't really care what you have to say. Bluesky is just another capitalist platform used to motize working class people's content.

I've oddly seen lemmy posts on mastodon lately and it kinda secured to me this is the real "web 3.0"

Kecessa ,

If you're on social media I don't really care what you have to say, if it was anything important it would be in traditional medias.

aeronmelon ,

Where's @FlyingSquid with a Riker trombone pic when you need them?

ObamaBinLaden ,

You're reading too much into this. I'm sure it was because of lack of usage

Evotech ,

Yeah can't be become it's 42k usd a month for th api npw

According to the article, Twitter is also charging $42,000 minimum for enterprise access. That's over $500k per year.
If I was a Nintendo employee, I would not only cut that expense, but also use it as leverage for a massive end of year bonus.

They should stop posting company business on Twitter, too.

RaoulDook ,

And nothing of value was lost. I can't imagine ever wanting to read a tweet from somebody's console game.

billiam0202 ,

The point was to be able to send clips from your games directly to social media.

RaoulDook ,

Right, that seems obvious. That's what I was talking about being of no value. Nobody needs to watch anyone's console game clips on Twitter.

elvith ,

Nobody needs to watch anyone's console game clips on Twitter.

FTFY

jettrscga ,

But what if they're riding a horse and the horse does something silly? What then?

barsquid ,

I do enjoy seeing a horse rocketing off into the stratosphere or using the skeletal animation from a bipedal NPC.

bolexforsoup , (edited )

I get we hate Twitter and rightfully so, but you really don’t see the value for a direct pipeline from consoles to a major social media platform?

People watching other people play video games (streaming, esports, etc) is a multi-billion dollar industry lol

Nobody wants to do business with unstable nazis.

barsquid ,

How I wish that were true.

iAmTheTot ,

I would be interested to know how much of Twitter's use was from these integrations. This could be an absolute drop in the bucket.

otp ,

You're likely right. At the same time, consoles integrating Twitter made it look more legitimate, like a part of people's daily lives. Twitter's legitimacy continues to decline.

I used this exclusively to get screenshots off my switch easily. Still very happy about bigger companies cutting ties with the muskrat.

itsonlygeorge ,

Ha ha! Fuck you Elon. Way to make your shitty platform irrelevant faster.

autotldr Bot ,

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The integration was removed as part of the Nintendo Switch’s 18.1.0 update, taking away the ability for users to link their X account with the console, or post in-game screenshots from Super Smash Bros.

The removal of these features comprised the majority of the 18.1.0 update, which also includes some general stability improvements and ditches support for linking social media accounts via the Switch’s Friend Suggestions feature.

Nintendo announced these changes last month but didn’t explicitly state the reason for pulling support for X.

Given Switch users can still share their content to Facebook, it likely has something to do with pricing changes to the X API which now starts at $42,000 a month for enterprise customers.

Microsoft didn’t mention X’s API update when it removed the ability for Xbox consoles to share game uploads to the service last April, nor did Sony when it followed suit in November for the PS5 and PS4.

Cost may not be the only factor as Slack said it had also pulled support because the API updates impacted the functionality of its own X integration, but regardless of the reason, console gamers will now have a hard time connecting directly with the platform.

The original article contains 272 words, the summary contains 199 words. Saved 27%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

ForgottenFlux OP ,

Summary:

  • Nintendo has discontinued support for X (formerly Twitter) integration on the Nintendo Switch console.
  • The reason for pulling support is likely due to pricing changes to the X API, which now starts at $42,000 a month for enterprise customers.
  • Microsoft and Sony also removed X integration from their consoles (Xbox and PS5/PS4) last year, but didn't specify the reason.
  • Slack, a communication platform, also pulled support for X integration due to the API updates impacting its functionality.
  • Console gamers will no longer be able to connect directly with X, despite the X Gaming account claiming that its "partnership with Nintendo remains strong" in a now-deleted post.
