Long-term carrier lock-in could soon be a thing of the past in America after the FCC proposed requiring telcos to unlock cellphones from their networks 60 days after activation....
I've had that freedom for the entire duration of the existence of smartphones, in the USA. I buy my phones with no contract, at discounted prices, then I flash them with custom ROMs to improve everything, and I use no contract cell phone service. Since about 2007, that is.
The card companies can get data from the Merchant Category Code to infer the nature of purchases, without specifics. The stores also have a record of what items you bought, which could also be sold unless you have a contract with the store that guarantees they won't sell your purchase history (at least in the countries without strong privacy laws)
No comment on your comment, except that it's quite mild to get a mod's attention. Having said that, I've had lots of comments removed around Lemmy because there are apparently a lot of mods who just want to edit the comment stream to fit their worldview. It's pretty goddamn pathetic IMO.
Anything the mods don't agree with personally is liable to be deleted. It's making Lemmy look bad with all the censorship.
For example I posted US gov't website info about how the poor can get free or reduced cost healthcare in the USA, and a mod removed my comment as "misinformation" because it was their opinion that there is no healthcare in the USA.
Anybody who is afraid of reading words that they don't agree with needs to grow up. If you don't get exposed to opposing viewpoints, then you don't understand reality.
I am someone who "tried to get government assistance" too, and I got discounted healthcare from the US government when I was poor. I shared .gov links about those programs to help others who might need free or reduced cost healthcare but might not be aware that community health centers exist. That's what was "misinformation" according to the Wrongthink Censors.
Yes those are the problematic fantasies that corporate social media is brainwashing people towards. Too many of the youth are wasting their time on fantasies of revolution when they could be acting within the scope of reality to achieve something actually meaningful.
Youtube is good as a video hosting website, but bad as anything social-related. I just treat it like a video website and ignore the rest. Private browsing mode, no login used is my preferred way to access youtube videos
*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? Streaming in general is great. Streaming services are a mixed bag of results, but overall our options are excellent at this point in time. You can have streaming services with no contract, pay for one month and abandon it if you don't like it. There are also numerous FREE streaming services with lots of great content.
It's important to understand the above in the context of how it used to be before Streaming was an option. There was basically only the option to have a cable or satellite TV on contract, or use OTA antenna TV, or watch everything on disc / tape. So yeah I think streaming is great.
Having said all that, I buy anything I want to keep perpetually on disc. 4k Blu-ray for movies and CDs for music (I bought 3 albums on CD over the last couple weeks). Games don't fit on discs anymore so I try to get stuff on GOG when it works out.
When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...
I still buy everything on CD that I can get from good bands. Nothing beats CD quality and durability. My CDs from 30+ years ago still play just fine except for the few that have too many scratches from abuse.
After I get a new CD I rip it to high quality MP3 and add it to my personal streaming library.
Shit I hadn't heard about that sealed transmission thing, that's fucked up. Transmission fluid replacement seemed pretty important on the maintenance schedule of all the cars I've had
That's great, but the question from that OP was "are you able to" and your answer should be yes. I make less than that and I definitely am able to. But I'm waiting on the market to correct first
This meme has no relevance to anything. If it was trying to imply that the USA is cut off from healthcare, it's totally inaccurate. There are thousands of hospitals and doctor's offices all over the USA, and Americans utilize them all the time to obtain the healthcare that they need.
Even Americans with no money have options for free healthcare, and here is a link that can be used to access it:
I'm just here to spread some facts to fight back against this ridiculous doomerism. It is a straight-up fact that Americans do have access to healthcare, and this meme is making a joke to imply that we do not. It's fucking stupid and being a doomer is worse than useless.
Yes I have had all sorts of medical issues, numerous emergency room visits, and car accidents. I am quite well versed with the healthcare system in the USA and its costs. Everything that I wrote was based on real-life experience and facts. I've paid for the births of multiple children and surgeries for myself and family.
Every one of you that thinks healthcare is not accessible is wrong. We have options, and being a doomer who thinks that you don't only hurts yourself and the others who you infect with your mental delusion.
Nowhere did I ever say anything like that. Not once did I say "the American healthcare system is perfect" or great or even good.
What I said already is still there where I said it before. Please do not make up your own interpretations of my words, because you cannot speak for me.
So if they are changing routes by using DHCP options, perhaps this could be exploited by telecom insiders when you are using mobile data, because your mobile data IP could be assigned by a DHCP server on the telecom network. If you're at home on wifi, then you can control your own DHCP server to prevent that.

It really isn't, you're probably just not aware of all the "proper" games that are out there for VR. Browse the Steam store and look at all the VR games sometime.
I have about 40 VR games in my Steam library, for example. I admit I haven't played them all yet but I've played a lot of them and most of them are great. There are tons more that I could buy if I had the time to play all that shit.
Praise the Founders for our glorious Constitution. I continually celebrate the fact that none of the morons who hate freedom have the ability to take our gun rights from us. Our gun rights will outlive you all, thanks to the strong protections the Supreme Court have bolstered that amendment with in the past 2 decades.
I'll never forget seeing the homeless man in a wheelchair with his eyeball hanging out from being shot in the face by a riot cop's baton round at the BLM protests. Poor guy was just trying to survive on the street at got a permanent disability for just being there.
Mine tried to get me to plug in a monitoring device into our cars' OBD-II ports after we signed up. I said Hell Naw and returned them shits to the sender. They said my rates would go up if I didn't use it and they didn't really change.
Next car I get will have to be neutered of such spyware, since they're apparently building it all in now. Current car just had a box I unplugged to disable the 3G cellular network connectivity and the car works just fine without it.
What, do those plebs not have driveways or garages for their cars? I never have to park on the street, since I just drive up my driveway across my 1/2 acre lawn. It's quite nice having that "wasted" use of land for my kids to play on whenever they want.
Or maybe chat history just isn't that important overall. I can do backups just fine on android but have only used that once. I wouldn't be too concerned if I lost all of my chats, as I've already read them.
The core security and privacy features are what's most important. I'd prefer they keep those as the top priority.
The admins don't control you. You can have an account anywhere else you want to. So unless you're paying for the servers here, you can deal with the Terms of Service or not use it.
