air_filter , in What is your unbiased opinion on Manjaro?

I've had more success with Manjaro than any other distro. I've gotten lots of software working because of the great package manager, all using a GUI. I think it's really easy to use and at the same time really flexible and powerful. I've tried to install Arch twice and failed both times. I guess I'm an idiot. Manjaro is easy to install and you get all the power a flexibility of Arch's package management.

@zephr_c@lemm.ee avatar

What even is an unbiased opinion? That doesn't even begin to make sense.

That being said, my very biased opinion is that it's a great way to install Arch without learning how Arch works so that when it inevitably breaks you don't even know how to ask the right questions.

"Unbiased opinion" is an oxymoron.

zarkony ,

I disagree. Not everyone wants to spend the time to completely customize their system. Distros like Manjaro and Endeavor give people a decent "just works" install while still giving them experience with the Arch ecosystem. The forums are usually a good resource, and everything on the arch wiki still applies. It might just be because I had previous linux experience, but I've learned a lot running Manjaro.

The average person is not going to jump straight into vanilla Arch as their first distro, but after a couple years with Manjaro, they might try it.

I run Manjaro as my gaming rig and have had no real issues.

Manjaro rocks! Fedora and Arch purists just can't accept it 🥲 boohoo . A sea of tears.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

It does! But I recently gave Bazzite a try...yeah I'm not ready for this so-called atomic distro (it's based on Fedora). I'm now, for the moment, settled on Garuda Linux (based on Arch). I'm liking it thus far, but if anything goes awry, I may head back to Manjaro. Garuda is much closer to Arch prime (running 6.8.9 linux-zen kernel where Manjaro is on 6.6.x still). And the chaotic-aur is actually kinda nice. Time will tell if I stick with it!

Coreidan , in [Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

ROFL windows is the easiest thing ever to install. Same with steam.

Sounds like either you’re terrible with computers or you have some serious hardware issues.

Blaming it solely on windows is a joke.

Windows has it's serious flaws, and I would never willingly go back to it at this point, but the installer is too hard? This sounds like a you-issue rather than a Windows one.

People have trouble installing Windows? You enter a license key and click next a couple times.

dream_weasel ,

You missed the part where you either sign in with your Microsoft account or cut your Internet, remove the webcam, fake your own death, and do the secret tap code in the bios to just have the OS without letting Microsoft into your butthole.

mestari ,

Windows 11 doesn't force you do any of that. Just skip the sign in. Your points were valid in 8/10 era but no more.

const_void ,

Not true. 11 very much still forces you to use an MS account.

It depends on the version, but yes, it does. It's especially a problem on prebuilt machines and laptops. It is incredibly annoying to work with in a corporate environment. Our helpdesk tech comes to me with issues related to this probably three times a week. I gave up with work arounds and we just have a throwaway Microsoft account now.

It has to be, windows makes it super easy to install so they can get your data faster.

OP:

I run Arch btw

dino , in Thunderbird Flatpak got updated to 115 Supernova

Not going to install flatpak tb, gimme the full version on my package manager...

fugepe OP ,

look at me, I like being a contrarian outcast

Your meds pal, take them

dino ,

I totally agree being a contrarian outcast, but not because of what I commented earlier. Why would I use flatpak thunderbird when there is version in my repos which just needs to be updated?

boo_ , in Does Anyone here use GoboLinux
@boo_@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I tried it like a year ago maybe and it was a very interesting concept, but I couldn't find what it really brings to the table over Guix or Nix. I've used Guix quite a lot since then and found that the separation of packages was afaict very similar, with the added bonus of having a completely reproducible system. Maybe Gobo brings something that Guix/Nix does not, but in my time of testing it I couldn't find anything.

ScottE , in What distro(s) do you use?

I use Manjaro, but I run it like vanilla Arch (for example pacman/yay and not pamac). I find this to be a sweet spot for me - rolling releases are so incredibly nice, and Manjaro being slightly slower than Arch is good from a stability standpoint in my experience.

I use ZFS all over the place, including the root storage pool on my home server, which has overall been a great experience with systemd-boot.

Manjaro for the best 🥰

Jo351 ,

Manjaro + SteamOS. Wanted to refresh myself on gaming with Linux/Proton prior to the Deck launch and Manjaro seemed the most similar. Helped that my Win11 install decided to crash explorer.exe every 5 seconds around the same time.

dirac_field , in What distro(s) do you use?

My laptop is on Manjaro and has been running flawlessly for years ...such a great experience with gnome 40+

My desktop is also on Manjaro, and things could not be more different. No Wayland, no animations in the gnome desktop, visual glitches since the last update ...guess it doesn't play well with Nvidia drivers. Anyone managing something decent with gnome+Nvidia?
