Beards are great. Shaving was the greatest crime of Romans.

??? Carthaginian men did not had that custom, most wore beards.

I think they meant the destruction of Carthage something I am still sore about

PolandIsAStateOfMind ,

Yeah that too, if the Carthage was not destroyed it would serve as counterbalance to Romans at least for a time, and the vile shaving custom would not spread as much.

Fisk400 , to Asklemmy in Why are many men growing beards again ?

The biggest problem with growing a beard is that it only looks good after a certain amount of time. When people grow beards it's usually when they are on vacation because it is nice not having to shave and you dont have to look professional with a crazy half grown beard.

A couple of years ago the word took an extended vacation and a lot of people took the opportunity to grow a beard.

blindsight ,

Eh, idk. Depends on the person. I've been going for a "scruff" look for a few years now. I trim close-ish 1-2 times/week, just before it starts to get itchy from hairs getting long enough. I always have at least 1-2mm facial hair.

If I go clean-shaven, I have baby face and I look 10 years younger. Not a good look. A bit of scruff makes me look closer to my age, but I don't like the look of a full beard on me since I can't grow a decent mustache. It looks like I'm trying too hard.

Something I've been for a while now is why this gender disparity is so strong in this specific area of engineering compared to all other engineering areas. People seem to claim it's because of the "geek" stereotype, but that seems more like a symptom than a cause and I fail to see how it enforces this disparity, considering there's nothing preventing a woman from being a geek too.

CancerMancer ,

In countries like India and China where women are less free to choose quality of life and human connections over money, a lot more of them go into IT.

KillingTimeItself ,

the actual reason? Nobody pushes women into the field of CS. Back in the 80s and 90s it was a similar thing, boys were fucking around with computers and software, not girls, it was considered to be a boys thing back then, and it still is now, because women are moving more frequently into higher expertise fields more often than not. CS while incredibly complicated, and difficult, is also just code monkey simulator at the end of the day. You could just write a PHD thesis on some mathematical shit and be as involved with CS while having been a mathematician instead lmao.

That's my guess at least.

Anticorp ,

Nobody pushed me into this field, I followed it because I liked it. Same thing with kids messing around with computers in the 80's. Nobody was pushing boys to do that, they just did. For some reason more men enjoy working with computers than women. I've worked with a few female coders, and they were good at their jobs, but women are definitely a minority in the field.

watersnipje ,

I probably would have gone into tech earlier if I’d had a female role model in tech. When my (male) friends started programming in high school, I was very interested and wanted to learn it too. But it literally didn’t occur to me that I could, until ten years later, when I was already far along in a study in the humanities. I ended up in data/ software development in the end, but it took me ten years longer because I didn’t realise earlier that it was a field I could get into if I wanted.
So long story short, it’s not just a matter of interest, there are societal factors that play a role too.

rottingleaf ,

May have something to do with computers as they exist being defined by male psychology. Well, it's understandable why swords, guns, rockets are, and same with computers.

Basically sending instructions to change state. I don't know how can a computer exist which doesn't work like this and is still usable for the humanity, but this seems to be psychologically a bit more of a male thing. Maybe there's nothing problematic for women but aesthetics there.

If it's something deeper, then maybe some analog optical\quantum\whatever computers of the future will push us to change paradigms for some drastic change in efficiency. And maybe those new paradigms will be more appealing to women.

laughterlaughter ,

Which is ironic, because women were the "code monkeys" of back when human computers were a thing - humans actually doing the computing by hand; and most of them were women.

Note that this meme is a reference to that one Firefox user, and Firefox doesn't let the tab music thing happen, it auto-mutes background tabs (in a way where it doesn't do it when you want background audio to play)

TrickDacy ,

Uh what?

Firefox has to my knowledge never done this. It absolutely doesn't do it currently. And like chrome it provides an icon on tabs playing sound so you can easily mute it with one click.

arudesalad ,

I think they meant that it doesn't start playing until you select the tab. If a video tries to start playing in a background tab, Firefox won't let it, but it won't stop videos that are already playing

Blisterexe ,
@Blisterexe@lemmy.zip avatar

Yeah that is what I mean, thank you for clarifying

It's clear that Kendrick really fucking hates Drake, but...

It really rubs me the wrong way that if he had the fucking "receipts" for all of this, he sat on it all until he could make a diss track.

Like, if Drake is a pedo who is grooming young women (that was clear before this anyway), isn't that a little bit more important than your ability to make a fuckin music track about it? Why would you sit on those receipts for so long instead of putting the motherfucker on blast when it happened? Why did you have to wait until Drake did a diss track first? It all feels so fucking petty and stupid.

We really do live in the worst fucking timeline. People would rather sit on criminal wrongdoing they know about to be able to use it to pump themselves and their record sales up, instead of actually, you know, helping fucking victims.

Kendrick didn't come out of it looking much better than Drake, in my opinion. They are both petty, selfish fucking twats who care more about their records sales than, I don't know, real people's real fucking lives.

GregorGizeh ,

Commercial musicians caring about their sales. Why is that surprising? It is time we stop thinking of every celebrity as a good person, they are completely average for the most part. Including casual indifference to things that are not their problems.

GiveMemes ,

If Kendrick was using this to pump his record sales up he'd probably be releasing a record to boost. He's just schooling a clown that danced on Pac's grave and as you say, it's already public knowledge. Not every fucking diss track has to be Story of Adidon level lmao.

ScoopMcPoops ,

So what exactly did Kendrick do wrong? Are you upset he didn't go to the police?

SnotFlickerman ,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Beyond sitting on a crime instead of reporting it to police because he would rather put it in a song...

  1. Using Drake's victims and their trauma essentially as props in his songs.

  2. Going all-in on weird racist shit where part of his critique of Drake is that Drake is... half-white. Like what. the. fuck. Bringing back the worst of the Colorist shit that I remember from the 90's. Don't act like this isn't fucked up, it's massively racist of Kendrick and feeds into fucked up racist shit in the black community between "light skins" and "dark skins." This hurts the black community as a whole and has effectively said to any and all half-black-half-white kids out there that the black community does not accept them. I bet they love being not accepted by both whites and blacks! What the flying fuck man. Drake being half-white has fuck-all to do with whether or not he's a good rapper, and Kendrick is old enough to god damned know better.

But yeah let's boost some dumb racist shit because it makes us feel good about our chosen side.

Even_Adder ,

Drake is not a rapper.

GiveMemes ,

It has nothing to do with him being biracial and everything to do with him being a culture vulture pos that was a Hollywood actor as a teenager and claims he rose from the bottom. It's about his code switching and pandering to his majority white boy audience. It's about the way he 'only comes to Atlanta for a check'. It's about the way he disrespected two of the artform's greats with his AI bullshit. It's not about him being half-white at all and everything to do with him not being a 'colleague' but a 'colonizer'.
