boycott activism is about inflicting economic loss on the business by abstaining from purchasing goods and services. while boycotts can sometimes entail employee action, it is never expected of you to take action that would result in harm to you or your family. take care of yourself first so that you have the power to fight for others ❤️

spujb , to memes in "No thanks, I research my own charities before making a donation"

i totally get that, and your instincts are noble, which is probably why this misconception is so pervasive. i too was in your position once, but yeah, no harm is done by donating at checkout.

spujb , to memes in "No thanks, I research my own charities before making a donation"

common misinformation, fact check here

Donations made by customers at checkout are not tax-deductible for the business, as the donation does not come from the company. According to TPC, the business only serves as a collector for charitable donations from its customers and has no right to claim any of the collected funds.

If you got this far in the comment, take a mental note to call this out the next time you see it. I too am very critical of the late stage capitalist hellscape we live in, but rounding up for charity is a rare instance of an unproblematic practice that is damaging to discourage as this post does. Charities do a lot of good and when you donate to them you are the one that gets the opportunity to do a writeoff.

Edit: If you are wondering why they do it then, it’s a psychological marketing technique. If you come to associate the good things that the Ronald McDonald House does with your McBurger, you are more likely to buy more tasty McBurgers. Sketchy? Sure, but it happens to be really effective at supporting charity work so it’s kind of a mutually beneficial arrangement.

this shit (what the landlord did) should be illegal and prosecutable?

imagine renting farmland out to a farmer, waiting for them to plant and grow crops right up till before harvest, then try to pull a switch and up the rent because “🤓☝️the land is worth more now.”

like no shit the plants on the property add value. value that came directly from the tenant in hundreds of hours of labor and materials!!??!!

good on this tenant for getting the W on the situation. im sure for countless poor others the opposite has been true :(

spujb , to Not The Onion in Residents Beg Michigan Mayor to Stop Solar Eclipse - He Scientifically Can't

misleading headline, and it’s not even close.

“residents beg mayor”

no they didn’t. the article doesn’t cite one singular instance of a resident asking the mayor to stop the eclipse. what it does cite is an off hand, likely facetious/joke comment by said mayor in relation to a bridge that is under construction.

of course, this fact didn’t stop the author from running with this absolute lie, the media entity from publishing the deception, and most of the comments here are falling for the perversion of truth and are clowning on and smearing an entire township.

pardon me if this comment is overly serious. i get this is a satire-of-satire community but holy smokes we need to have better standards for our media. if they can get away with this white lie, imagine what they do every other day when lives are on the line.

spujb , to science in Playground bullies do prosper – and go on to earn more in middle age

uncomfortable with this being the headline and seems like without further research this could just be one of those confirmation bias things. seems to make some assumptions that we don’t know empirically such as:

  • teachers in the 1980s were a good judge of character, fairly identifying who bullies whom
  • that this aggressive behavior at 10 years old continues meaningfully into later life

not denying the scientific accuracy of the study, but the journalist integrity of making this the headline.

edit: you can read the original article here, and yeah the actual text of the summary vindicates my judgment of the Guardian article. the original authors frame it as an analysis of “socio-emotional skills,” not agression per se, because again, these kids are ten, not even in high school yet.
