“Papaoutai”, the lead single from Racine Carrée, was Stromae’s return to fame, after a three-year hiatus. The world last saw him skyrocketing the charts with “Alors On Danse” back in 2010.

While “Alors On Danse” was about the dangers of nightlife, “Papaoutai” (which isn’t a real word but a malapropism of Papa où t'es) seems to be inspired by a particular line from “Alors On Danse”:

Stromae reveals his relationship with his late father, or rather lack thereof. Stromae later revealed that his dad, who was Rwandan, was killed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide when Stromae was a little kid. Stromae’s father’s absence was the inspiration for writing this song, which is about the struggles of growing up without a father figure.

British duo CUT_ recorded an English version (not translation) of “Papaoutai” which charted in France.

“Alors On Danse” was Stromae’s first international success and introduced the world to his unique blend of musical styles. The song draws heavily from electro and hip hop, even to the point of lending itself to a rap remix. “Alors On Danse” was the most-played French-language single worldwide of 2010. The song is close in meaning to The Lonely Island’s “After Party”.

The song’s premise is about someone who dances to forget his problems but he soon faces the music and his problems overwhelm him to the point of self-destruction.

The song’s title came from producer and Monument Records founder Fred Foster. When Foster proposed the title, Kristofferson heard “McGee” when, in actuality, [Foster] had said “McKee” (Bobby McKee was the secretary of someone who worked in the same building as Foster).

Written by Kris Kristofferson but originally performed by Roger Miller.

In coming up with a concept for the song, a scene from the film La Strada came to Kristofferson’s mind. “I thought of … a scene where Anthony Quinn is going around on this motorcycle and Giulietta Masina is the feeble-minded girl with him, playing the trombone.”

Later on in the film, Quinn hears a woman singing the melody that little girl used to play and finds out that [the girl] has died. That night, [Quinn] goes to a bar and gets in a fight. Drunk, he ends up howling at the stars on a beach.

“To me, that was the feeling at the end of ‘Bobby McGee.’ The two-edged sword that freedom is. He was free when he left the girl, but it destroyed him. That’s where the line ‘Freedom’s just another name for nothing left to lose’ came from.”

Ah, thanks for explaining your point of view!

I see the gov't and domestic companies being a way bigger threat than foriegn gov'ts and companies.

Our gov't has way more control on our media and what we see and hear.

Propaganda from your own gov't is a much bigger deal. Once you start criticizing and questioning why the status quo has not changed over the last many decades/half century.

This being: more endless wars, more bailouts required for banks, more policing, and more medical debt, more mental health problems, more student debt, and it continues...

All while people are not experiencing an improvement in their day to day lives, it seems.

All in all, I may be in the minority, when it comes to this topic; when talking about the issues that are caused by all of these systematic problems we will continue to face in the future.

IMO, in general, the more important policy would be to protect our data from domestic companies and gov'ts, as regular citizens.

Our data being collected from domestic companies and gov't agencies infringes on our rights, while also being a closer threat than foreign gov'ts, lookingat this from regular citizens view.

Gov't, contractors, and military personnel already have their own way of protecting themselves from foreign countries. Using secure devices and connections, while following their own policies.

In the end, it seems to be pointing toward Tiktok Ban so not sure how well this will go.
