The ingenious ‘network tree’ defying Gaza's connectivity blockade: Italian filmmaker Manolo Luppichini's insights on connectivity in war-torn Gaza”

by Mariam A. in Global Voices

@palestine @israel

“When the combination of big tech and politics failed the Palestinian people by overlooking the internet disruptions affecting Gaza, grassroots technology known as the ‘network tree’ came to the rescue. Utilizing the humblest of elements such as buckets, smartphones, and e-SIMs, this ingeniously simple technology provided much-needed connectivity to a community fragmented by war, in the face of severely damaged infrastructure.”

“[..] What benefits?”

Well, while the people of Gaza are both selectively and indiscriminately killed, denied water, starved, and are forced to endure amputations and other operations with no anaesthetic, soldiers in the are able to enjoy a brand-new swimming pool provided by [the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel’s Soldiers] . AWIS described the purpose of the pool as follows:

‘The combat soldiers who serve at this base work exceptionally hard in very difficult circumstances, and so the swimming pool is a perfect place for them to unwind, and it also upgrades the base to a new level. We are very proud of this’."

“DAVID LAMMY’S BIG IDEA: NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNDER LABOUR: The man who wants to be foreign secretary is reassuring elite audiences that UK foreign policy will not seriously change under a Keir Starmer government - a strategy confirmed in Labour’s election manifesto.”

by Mark Curtis in Declassified UK @Declassified_UK

@palestine @israel

“Why are Lammy and Labour so supportive of Israel, despite the extent of its atrocities and British public opposition to the attacks on Gaza?

One reason is that Lammy is Washington’s man in Labour and cannot be seen to upset policy-makers in the US who consistently facilitate Israel’s onslaught on Palestinians.

Lammy has constantly signalled that Labour foreign policy under his leadership will deviate little from Washington’s priorities, and he has been a regular visitor to a string of elite, establishment fora in the US.

The other reason is that Lammy is, like 20 percent of his fellow Labour MPs, a recipient of funds from the Israel lobby. Since becoming an MP in 2000, he has accepted donations from the Israel lobby on numerous occasions, the value amounting to £32,550, Declassified has found.”

“BRITAIN GREENLIT DOZENS OF ARMS DEALS WITH ISRAEL AMID GAZA WAR: Trade secretary Kemi Badenoch kept arming Israel throughout its brutal onslaught on Gaza, new data reveals.”

by John McEvoy in Declassified UK @Declassified_UK

@palestine @israel

“[UK Trade Secretary] Kemi has not stopped any arms deals with Israel since October 7, instead allowing British companies to export components for military aircraft.”

[..]

“The UK government’s decision to greenlight more than 100 such export deals with Israel over the last eight months could open up British ministers to international arrest applications over complicity in war crimes.

Emily Apple from Campaign Against Arms Trade () told Declassified: ‘These figures show that it’s business as usual for arms dealers to break international law and continue arming Israel’s genocide.

‘The government and the UK arms trade are complicit in the horrendous war crimes that Israel is committing against Palestinian people in Gaza.’”

“Divestment at the University of Edinburgh: Breaking from Balfour’s colonial legacy: As a university steeped in the legacy of Balfour, we have an urgent duty to end complicity in Israel's settler colonial project. Divestment from companies complicit in occupation, apartheid, and genocide is the first step toward historical redress.”

by University of Edinburgh Students and Staff Divestment Movement in Mondoweiss @mondoweiss

@palestine @israel

“This Monday 17th June 2024, the University of Edinburgh Court rules on a historical decision on whether or not to begin an active and immediate process of divestment from ‘controversial weapons’ complicit in Palestinian dispossession and Israeli settler colonialism, which the University has been entangled with for well over a century. The ruling of the court could mean immediate divestment from companies like Amazon and Alphabet as their ‘AI solutions’ might be plausibly in use in the mass targeting of civilians in Gaza. This would set a grand precedent and would serve as a concrete step to reducing our institutional complicity in violence against Palestinians.”
