Complementary Colours

The cold cyan of the early morning contrasts with the orange tints of the rising sun. Mist clings to the slopes of Búlandstindur, and the waters of the fjord have a fragile ice crust at the shores.

A photo of a sunrise. The sun itself isn't visible, but the colours in the clouds confirm that it's rising. The sky is pale cyan with blocks of dense cloud across a mountainous promontory on the right. A pointed mountain has a scarf of mist around it, but the peak is clear. At its foot are the dark waters of a still fjord. On the left is an icy shoreline with part of a road, on which the viewer is standing. It's very still, and calming.

    In Summer And In Winter

    This is lovely Fláajökull, the "Sloping Glacier" in south-western .

    This creeping glacier is an outlet from Vatnajökull, and reached its maximum expansion in ≈ 1894. It has receded ≈ 2 km (1.25 mi) during the last 100 years, leaving a glacial lagoon at its snout.

    Almost the same shot as before, but this one has been taken in summer when the snow is at its minimum. The foreground now is darker vegetation, the sky above is heavy with cloud and the light is from the left. The edges of the glacier are now more distinct, and the base rock shows through more clearly. The ice is moving in from the upper right, across to the centre and then takes a dog-leg turn to the right as it falls over the ridge. From there, it flows slowly towards the right and spreads out nearer ground level.

    A photo of a landscape in winter. The foreground is sparse brown vegetation over gravel. In the centre of the shot is a snow-covered glacier, a fall of ice down a mountain face. Above it are two distinct peaks, spindrift snow is whipping from them showing that the wind is from the right. Some dark bare rock is visible but mainly the mountain is covered in ice. The glacier begins quite high up on the mountain, and pours in slow motion towards a ridge, where it drops suddenly before levelling out again near ground level. The sky above is cloudy but blue, and the sunlight is from the upper left. Power pylons are visible at the snout.

    I only noticed because I'm currently watching the live cams of the volcanic eruptions near Grindavik, which is in the south-west, and was wondering how far this glacier was from there. :)

    Black Beauty

    The volcanic sands of Reynisfjara, near Vík í Mýrdal in southern .

    This strand regularly features in lists of "World's Top Beaches" due to its cleanliness, water quality and sheer loveliness.
    If it was rated for swimming and sunbathing, it would get 0/10 every time!

    The basalt stump in the centre is Arnardrangur (Eagle Rock) and in the distance are the famous Reynisdrangar.

    A photo of a black sand beach, stretching away from the viewpoint. The sea is on the right, sweeping stormy, white-capped waves onto the sands. In the foreground is a stream of water coming from the left to meet the sea and, on its bank, a twisted stump of columnar grey rock with vegetation on the horizontal tops. The black sand stretches away in a curve towards the right, where there is a cliff face. Off the end of this is a set of jagged sea stacks. Spray is rising from the sea, suggesting strong offshore winds.

    Glacial Reflection

    A sunset boat ride across Fjallsárlón lagoon, towards the snout of Fjallsjökull glacier.

    The mountain on the left is Ærfjall (407m/1335ft) and the hook-shaped tongue on the left is Hrútárjökull - the 'Ram Glacier'.

    A photo of a landscape, taken from the surface of a lake with a turquoise iceberg floating in it. Smaller pieces of ice dotted around the water surface suggests that there are many more, but unseen. On the other side of the water on the right-hand side is the end of a glacier tongue, again the ice is cyan but very cracked and ruffled as it cascades down towards the lake. In the centre of the shot is a dark brown mountain with another ice tongue tumbling slowly down, this one is shaped like a hooked claw. The sky is misty and it's difficult to tell where the higher ice ends and the cloud begins. On the far left, at the top and slightly off-screen, is the sun, shining with a yellowing light suggesting the early stages of sunset. The scene is reflected in the rippled surface of the lake in front of the viewer.
