GrapheneOS or nothing :/

DivestOS absolutely slaps. Well, all things considered

Edit:
It's absolutely fantastic for what it is, and that is fact. Maintained by a single person, well documented, and doesn't promise more than it can deliver.

darcy ,
@darcy@sh.itjust.works avatar

wow, never heard of it. do u use it?

miss_brainfart ,
@miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml avatar

I've been using it for almost two years now, and I like it a lot. (small disclaimer, I'm running it on a OnePlus 5T, which is one of their so-called golden devices that it runs best on)

It's pretty much the next best thing after Graphene, if you don't want to buy a Pixel.

The guy who maintains it does an excellent job of documenting issues, what works on what device, what the system itself can and can't do, it's very transparent.

He doesn't overpromise either, and explicitely states that getting a Pixel with Graphene is the better option overall. Greatly appreciate the honesty.

I'll use it for as long as he'll support my device, and then we'll see if I switch to Graphene.

One important thing though:
While you can install microG, DivestOS doesn't officially support it, and while most things work, some don't. SafetyNet, for instance.

DIVESTOS DEVELOPER BANNING ME ON MICAY'S ORDERS OTHERWISE HE WILL INITIATE A SOCIAL MEDIA HARASSMENT CAMPAIGN AGAINST DIVESTOS

Yes, this happened, and this is my favourite part as far as everything GrapheneOS head/mods have done to date. As dramatic as it sounds, Micay in realtime, in DivestOS' XMPP chatroom, was accusing me of the typical "harassment ringleader campaign" BS, and ordered DivestOS/Mull developer (these are his aliases) SubZer0Carnage/Tad/SkewedZeppelin that if I was not banned immediately, DivestOS and him would face social media targeted campaign and DivestOS will have to forcibly pull off any borrowed GrapheneOS code. DivestOS developer dusted his hands off me, since he does not like me apparently for liking some closed source software and he benefits off of the crybully. Also, unlike the crybully, I have never harassed or harmed anyone because I have a moral conscience to not be an abusive asshole on internet, so he will face no issues on my end.

krolden , in Why does this community, which is privacy oriented, use Discord rather than Matrix?
@krolden@lemmy.ml avatar

Because privacy communities are a joke.

mojo ,

Yeah it quickly becomes a dick measuring contest and shunning people for using different things. It becomes very black/white views, and have some crazy out of touch takes, like expecting your grandma to self host lol. They also confuse anonymity with privacy, like how not being able to sign up for something with tor and monero is a privacy violation, it's not.

funnystuff97 ,

I think it falls into the same pitfalls as most super niche communities, like a lot of subreddits did.

For example, the shaving subreddit (/r/wicked_edge I think?). Its mission statement was to introduce people to cleaner, safer, and more efficient shaving methods. And for the most part, with all of its resources and wikis, it successfully did it. But if you choose to stay after you've made your informed purchases, the posts were mostly braggarts showing off their latest hundreds-of-dollars handles, supreme razor blades, brushes made from actual gold, that sort of thing. My point is, the average person (by my guess, like 90% of people going to the site) gets the information they need and then never participate in the community again. But those who stay are those who really want to stay-- people who are most likely to brag and boast. So over time, it falls more and more into plain old dick measuring contests.

This obviously isn't true of all communities, but I think it's a common pitfall for a lot of them. I can imagine privacy is very similar: take all the steps you can to learn to protect your privacy, and then... you're good, for the most part.

online ,

Wow this is great I am surprised to see people talking about this (let alone even being aware of it).

Really refreshing to not have it to be a contest to follow random dogmas.

Lemmy is refreshingly smarter than I was used to seeing on Reddit.

I don't know if this was intentional or not, but either way this was hilarious!!

Skimmer , in Please, do not use Brave.
@Skimmer@lemmy.zip avatar

Brave is not spyware. That website you linked is horrible and full of misinformation. They also claim that Firefox, and even Tor Browser, are spyware. They act as if any and all connections a browser makes are automatically bad and used for spying/tracking.

I won't disagree with the other criticisms of Brave that you made, but just wanted to point that out. That website is just highly unreliable and makes verifiably false claims about the browsers it reviews.

eya OP ,
@eya@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just commenting to let you know I've clarified a bit in the post. Also, stock Firefox is spyware so.

Stock as in out-of-the-box.

Edit: If you want to downvote this go ahead, but at least know that it's true. Without changing ANY settings, Firefox is spyware.

SecretPancake ,

Never heard of that. Please do not just claim things without clarifying.

eya OP ,
@eya@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It's a well known fact that Firefox is full of telemetry that you need to turn off. There's a reason for so many user.js files and forks existing.

g0nz0li0 ,

Using the terms "telemetry" and "spyware" interchangeably makes the former seem more nefarious and the latter less nefarious. I understand where you're coming from but I wouldn't want to see the term "spyware" diluted to include anonymised data about how users are using product features.

That's not to say telemetry data is fine or that a company might claim to only use telemetry data isn't actually using spyware.

AphoticDev , in Please, do not use Brave.
@AphoticDev@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Let's not forget one of the biggest investors is a right-wing billionaire who runs a corporate intelligence agency that contracts with the DoD. And the only proof we have that he doesn't collect data on Brave's users is the questionable word of the devs.

I would appreciate if we don't bring politics into the conversation. They are completely subjective and only serve to stray away from the original point.

Edit:

Yes, I'm aware I'm in the wrong here.

SkyeStarfall ,

Privacy is a political subject.

TheAnonymouseJoker Mod ,

Free software movement itself is political. If you use FOSS, you are political.

AOCapitulator ,
@AOCapitulator@hexbear.net avatar

untrue, politics affects the shape of everything, if we don't 'make it political' we let whatever political lean already is there continue. thats not apolitical, thats apathy

that said thanks for the post, good to know!

silent_water ,
@silent_water@hexbear.net avatar

how can privacy ever be stripped of political content? it's inherently about social forces - ie politics.

Helmic ,

aren't you on a fucking anarchist instance, ding dong? shut the fuck up, we don't do "apolitical" theatrics here.

xantoxis ,

If you know you're in the wrong, delete the comment, or at least strikethrough everything you have changed your mind about.

The people who downvoted you have already moved on, they don't need or care about an apology and won't see it.

eya OP ,
@eya@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I won't delete the comment as that also deletes (not really but hides) the replies. As for strikethrough, I don't really think it matters that much.

Kissaki ,

I don’t really think it matters that much

When I read your comment I couldn't see what specifically you consider yourself being wrong about. Striking through could have clarified. Without it, I would have preferred the comment as it was. Then it at least makes sense within the thread and makes a clear statement. (Whether one agrees with it or not.)

Linus_Torvalds , in Search engines compared

I just love what has become of this thread:

  • Think it's a nice post
  • Look for Google/Kagi, but they're missing
  • People ask for sources, realize OP has chart from VERY dodgy conspiracy website
  • People start accusing Kagi Support of lying to their face, Screenshota of convo attached
  • Other users don't think its a lie, rather a misunderstanding
  • Insults start
  • ?

Why is Brave Search considered as heavily censored?

Tibert ,

Because it doesn't show the conspiracy theory enhancing the authors conspiracy anti-covid/anti-moon landing opinion :

meaning you will never find the truth about the moon landing or COVID vaccines there even if the query asks for exactly that. What you will find - though - is a bunch of irrelevant "fact check" or "science loving" sites, or ones shitting on "conspiracy theorists".

cerement , in Search engines compared

shouldn’t that category be “SearXNG” instead of “SearX”? – SearX went into maintenance mode a year ago and then archived their code last week – searx.space isn’t even bothering to list SearX instances anymore

qyron , in I has come to my attention that some users have never heard of F-droid. F-droid is a free software app store for android

Been using Fdroid to the point where my first boot into a new phone is:

Open chrome > download fdroid > open settings > uninstall/disable every single application I can > open fdroid > install all the relevant apps I require for making my phone useful

I'm just waiting for a small life upgrade in order to be able to support some app developers; it will be money better spent than using the standard google apps.

digger , in I has come to my attention that some users have never heard of F-droid. F-droid is a free software app store for android
@digger@lemmy.ca avatar

Something worth noting is that F-Droid is both an app to download other apps but they also maintains a repository of apps. You can use alternative store apps (like Droid-ify) with the F-Droid repository OR you could use the F-Droid app with a different repository (like IzzyOnDroid). You can mix and match to meet your needs.

I use the Droid-ify app with the F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, microG, NewPipe, and Collabora repositories.

Once you start down this rabbit hole, give Obtanium a look.

Squizzy ,

I just have the basic f droid app, the layout is awful and confusing. Is there one you suggest?

digger ,
@digger@lemmy.ca avatar

I'm a big fan of Droid-ify.

MagneticFusion , in Why is CalyxOS consider more private than Graphine, but Graphine is more secure?

I think this is only the case if you use GrapheneOS with Sandboxed Google Play. Obviously it is more privacy invasive to have a literal Google app on your device constantly running even if it is sandboxed, whereas with CalyxOS MicroG is somewhat of a proxy/anonymous workaround to Google Play. The reason why they say CalyxOS is less secure, is mainly because they have a tendency is fall behind on security updates for up to weeks or even months, whereas the GrapheneOS team is always on top of it. So, the privacy aspect goes like this: GrapheneOS > CalyxOS > GrapheneOS with Sandboxed Google Play. The security goes like this: GrapheneOS > GrapgeneOS with Sandboxed Google Play > CalyxOS.

I shall note that if you are like Richard Stallman and an extreme free software advocate then CalyxOS is the one that will align with your needs more.

Also FYI, the GrapheneOS and CalyxOS teams do not like each other at all, mainly because the old GrapheneOS head, Daniel Micay, was a toxic individual. Check out this video from Techlore and this video from Louis Rossmann for more info. Despite of that, I would say GrapheneOS is objectively the better operating system and it is what I use, very happy with it.

iPhone has the better reputation for privacy/security, however it is proprietary software and so no one can really tell for sure what kind of data that Apple might collect on you.
