I wasn't aware just how good the news is on the green energy front until reading this. We still have a tough road in the short/medium term, but we are more or less irreversibly headed in the right direction.
Degrowth isn't just about population, or even about it at all. Degrowth is about doing the opposite of what capitalism forces us to do, infinite growth on a finite planet.
But also, the last thing we should do is incentivize birthing more people. We have increasing amounts of automation technologies, we don't need more people.
Yes I know degrowth isn't about population, that's what I said?
But if population naturally declines, I really don't think it's a good idea to try to reverse that trend. Less people means less resources consumed, and better quality of life for those children. Prioritize the people already alive over those that aren't born. We have more than enough people in the world, and a lot of those people's potential is not fully reached due to inequality.
I guess because the Gen Z comp sci students are the people who are truly fluent in computers. We were immersed in the internet and digital technology from a young age, but also had the curiosity to go beneath the surface of them, and get a real understanding of how things work. Most people just use the technology superficially, even if they have grown up with the internet and computers.
Of course it's assuming that's how advanced propulsion tech works. But it is useful to try to detect, just in case that's how it actually turns out to work, no?
And if we detect something interesting, like a potential warp bubble collapse, well, that also gives us a strong hint that it's possible, helping us to direct research in the right path.
Detecting techno-signatures of aliens would be super useful for us.
How stupid do you have to be to believe that only 8% of companies have seen failed AI projects? We can't manage this consistently with CRUD apps and people think that this number isn't laughable? Some companies have seen benefits during the LLM craze, but not 92% of them. 34% of companies report that generative AI specifically...
You need to really specify what is meant by "AI" here. Chances are it's probably some form of smart traffic lights to improve traffic flow. Which is not all that special. It has nothing to do with LLMs
You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...
Yeah, it's about as useful as saying that all of science is "just statistics". Which like, in a literal way, it's true. But science is still what forms the foundation of our entire civilization and base of knowledge.
Knowing that a blood pressure drug works is "just statistics", but you still take it if your blood pressure is high.
In addition, what if the person noticed the obstructions and then moved them away, and then accidentally got a finger in there? That's a realistic scenario too.

And why is it always "we have to respect other people calling for the erasure of the rights of minorities"? Do you have any idea how frustrating and tiresome that is, as a minority?
One of my most hated things in the dying days of Reddit is people having to put the /s because of all the mass down voting from users that didn't get a post was a joke....
Tone indicators like /s are vital for neurodivergent people who struggle with understanding people's intentions, especially over text.
In addition, you probably underestimate the amount of miscommunication that happens over the internet due to strangers communicating with each other without any tone indicators at all.
But if the true costs were quantized in the formula and not just externalized maybe it would suddenly make more sense. After all, in the end, society pays for it no matter what.
