Fuck Cars

snailwizard , in Masculinity on sale

It’s hilarious to me because it’s not even for them per se, it’s for other men and they still want to crow about “alpha” and “no homo”.

Jokes aside, it’s a pretty disgusting culture surrounding cars.

temlem473 , in Masculinity on sale

It really is pretty sad when you think about it.

They pay between 60 to 100 thousand dollars to look like tools. It's very similar to people who spend 40k+ on Harley motorcycles. No one gives a shit about their truck or bike except for them and other tools.

HardlightCereal , in [meta][discussion] Rules for this Community

I'm concerned about the definitions of some of the terms in these rules

  • What does it mean to be kind? Do you have to agree with everyone? Are you allowed to say the fuck word?

  • What does it mean to attack other people? Are we talking ad hominem, or is making an argument with a stern tone of voice an attack?

  • Where is the line between opinion and action drawn? Is it okay to attack people for driving cars? That's not an opinion, it's an action, and it kills people, but I have a feeling certain people would say no anyway

  • What is a double post? Do you mean repost or crosspost?

Gleddified , in Okay, be honest, how many of you actually have cars?

I have three, I'm a car enthusiast. I want to enjoy my car without the entirety of society being required to own them to exist.

Even if the dream is achieved and taking my car is more expensive and slower than public transit (which it should be), I'd still drive most of the time because I actually enjoy it. I'd rather not share the road with people that also actually want to be there. It'd be a safer and more pleasant experience.

austin , in [meta][discussion] Rules for this Community

Should also include: don’t invite violence against people who simply own cars.

KillAllPoorPeople ,

A blanket rule like that is deeply troubling. I'm glad the mods ignored you.

austin ,

Our goal is to peacefully encourage more people to cycle and convince car owners to use their car for less trips when viable to do so. A lot of people own cars, would calling them Nazis really help our cause?

My vision is we make cyclists and public transit users look like responsible happy citizens and attract jealousy of those stuck in traffic.

Then why call it Fuckcars? Call it CuddlyPussDriverLove

I find it good too vent at arseholes who drive. They hold all the power, we're not punching down here by making fun of, or laughing at them and it can be a relief valve to vent at their choices both directly and indirectly that enable the car centric shit show to.continue. I wouldn't go into /c/cars and expect angst against cars and drivers but /c/fuckcars ? Yeah... it's in the name

CowsLookLikeMaps ,
@CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don't think it needs to be as specific as that why bit just don't incite violence. Period. Otherwise, it's making a statement about the community as a whole. (also, this is already covered by the rules)

SwingingTheLamp , in [meme] Trains -- not driverless cars -- are the future of transportation

I like how you assume that society will choose to have a future over self-immolation.

Scrof ,

Yeah that's a bold assumption. My bet is on "it's going to get progressively worse and never better". I have yet to be proven wrong. Since the day I was born everything's been enshittening with only inconsequential cosmetic improvements (lol technology, what a joke).

fushuan ,

My plan is to work from home, be completely self sufficient with minimal transport and do all I can do online.

hellothere ,

So your definition of self sufficient is to be 100% reliant on Internet infrastructure?

dojan , in [meme] How would you rather see this land developed?
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

You can still have trees and plant life in low density housing. You don’t need green deserts everywhere.

ladam ,

Yeah fuck lawns too, they aren’t meant to exist

whitecapstromgard ,

The one on the left has no communal space. The one on the right does.

AdmiralShat , in [meme] How would you rather see this land developed?

The issue is that all of those apartments are owned by one person getting filthy fucking rich from rent.

5714 ,

Then organise the renters, let them buy the house to transform it into syndicate or cooperative housing. Social apartment construction isn't impossible.

HexesofVexes , in [meme] How would you rather see this land developed?

A lot of people are pro-apartmemt before living in one, so here are some fun facts:

  1. Apartments usually have a maintenance cost, that covers as little as possible while still costing a lot. You never really own the flat, the building company does.

  2. You often have a communal garden; it's looked after by the lowest bidding contractor. Not all flats have balconies, so you are unlikely to have your own.

  3. Fear of fire and flooding - if someone else messes up, your stuff is toast/soaked. Insurance companies love that extra risk, it gives them an excuse to charge more.

  4. No flat has good sound proofing - the baby screaming downstairs at 5am and the thunder of the morbidly obese person upstairs going to the bathroom at 1am will denote your new sleep schedule (i.e. disturbed)

  5. I hope you're in for deliveries - apartments have no safe spots to leave things.

  6. You will not be able to afford a flat with the same floor space as a house. I'm sorry, welcome to your new coffin.

  7. Good luck drying your laundry (spoiler, your living room is going to have a laundry rack).

  8. Good luck owning a bike (it's either the bike or your laundry, take your pick).

  9. Vocal intimacy becomes a community event.

Living in a flat is a pile of little miseries grouped together.

ShittyRedditWasBetter , in ask patrick

Because people like cars. So they buy cars.

hairinmybellybutt OP ,

I love playing gran turismo, I love porsche, doesn't mean I would buy a 1 ton car

duffman , in [meme] How would you rather see this land developed?

Good luck to the apartment dwellers when the next wave of COVID hits.

SCB , in ask patrick

This is awesome because the point of this meme template is that Patrick has bad ideas, just like how divesting totally from cars in the US is a bad idea.

hairinmybellybutt OP ,

no it means that even somebody as stupid as patrick understand that cars are stupid

danielfgom , in this is all
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

It makes a good point but only if your country actually has public transport.

If you live somewhere with zero public transport, the car is your only option.

XiELEd ,
@XiELEd@lemmy.world avatar

That's why the post advocates for public transport. So that we can have better options.

Rambler , in this is all

Recently visited York (UK) and they have a fantastic bus system - and they're electric.

STUPIDVIPGUY , in this is all

Now consider an electric bus

aeharding ,
@aeharding@lemmy.world avatar

Now consider a trolley.

ChillPill ,
@ChillPill@lemmy.world avatar

Are there multiple tracks?

WackyTabbacy42069 ,

Well, there's two. Only problem is the often obstructions and questionable breaking system
