I can understand a wish for more transparency in how the systems work, but if you're not willing to pull your weight and put your money where your mouth is, you don't get to complain. How is it in any way strange that China would be looking to boost the Chinese market? Every other market does exactly this.

Chat control was a proposal on an EU level which meant that applications and social media platforms would be forced to scan all of their users messages. The proposal has been put forth by the EU comission as a part of a larger package with the purpose of protecting children against exploitation on the internet. The Left Party considers that the part specifically about chat control wouldn't contribute to the end goals. There are more effective measures that need to be taken in order to protect children.
After significant criticism from us and many others the EU parliament has significantly improved the proposal. They have among other things removed all parts regarding automatic scanning. This has meant that all parties now are in support of the EU-parliament position. The proposal is now on hold among the member states and instead another, temporary law has been extended to counter sexual abuse of children on the internet.
Overall the Left (Vänsterpartiet) campaigns on a position of being against surveillance and the like. The Social Democrats (part of the Left coalition) however is in favour of it, because of course they fucking are. My issue here is obviously that they're lying to our faces.
On a much greater scale I have a lot of issues. For the most part I align mostly with V and MP, but we're talking on a level of like 60-70%, so they don't actually represent my views particularly well. In the grand scheme of things that's also not something I'd expect; I'm rather extreme but I also realise that there's only so much we can do when operating within the system we currently have. Thus I align with the parties that align the closest with the core beliefs I have, V and MP.
One of my biggest icks when it comes to politics is hiding behind children. It infuriates me because it's never genuine. It's never about the fucking children, they're just a convenient excuse because the moment someone criticises a suggestion, you can turn around and say "Oh so you hate children? Are you a paedophile? Why do you support children being harmed?"
As a Swede, I think the reason this baffles you has a lot to do with the fact that the U.K. is comparatively tiny, with 67 mil inhabitants on 244 sqkm. Sweden for example has 10.5mil inhabitants on 450 sqkm.
What happens is that densely populated areas will have access to these services, perhaps not for free, but they're at least there. Less sparsely populated areas have less service coverage, and so you get more car dependant. Here in Sweden at least we have a decent public transport network so even in my old village of 600 people you could make do without a car, you just couldn't be particularly spontaneous about things.
The U.S. is very much structured around owning cars. Massive roads, poor pedestrian/cycling infrastructure, and a general lack of public transit. I visited Massachusetts back in 2019 and got a completely different perspective on things. Until then I didn't understand why my friend just didn't bike everywhere, but having been there it's easy to see that it's not viable. Even the cul-de-sac they lived on wasn't very pedestrian friendly.
That's not to say that the U.S. could have more sensible sizes on their cars, they definitely could. I think the sizes of cars growing has to do with manufacturers wanting increased profit. We're seeing an increase in the average car size here in Europe as well, with a lot of the more compact cars being taken off the market.
This is definitely something that has to be thought about in terms of UI/UX design. I recently developed a Outlook calendar-esque interface, and we've had on-and-off discussions for a couple of hours about how we best implement a way to "click" an empty spot in the calendar to create an event there.
I'm championing "we don't on mobile, but use double-click on desktop." I think I'm winning.
Wax paper is great! What I think is so funny about this is that to me wax paper feels more premium. I guess it's because it's because plastic is so ubiquitous that despite being an incredible and versatile material, it's also ridiculously mundane.
Think it's worth mentioning that U.S. politics sets the tone of politics in a lot of the west. When Trump won, the alt-right parties in more or less all of Europe grew significantly. Here in Sweden over the span of the almost 8 years since, our nazi party grew from a smaller party that the right wingers argued whether or not they should collaborate with in order to create a right-wing coalition and win majority, to the second largest party in Sweden.
Last election we had here (2022) surveillance and stop and frisk were decently big talking points. Even the supposed Liberals are like "uwu so sad privacy is dying we have to be careful but big brother needs to sees you we nweed to be hawd on cwime!1!" I think the only party that's not OK with it is the leftists.
I still don't quite get how these people make sense of the world. We recently had a big reveal that our nazi party is using "anonymous social media accounts" to try and influence popular opinion. They claim that they don't, and that the accounts aren't affiliated with the party, but there was a whole report on the thing and it's landed them in some hot water. The people voting for them are pretty much unfazed but the right-block alliance overall has taken quite a hit to their public support.
One of the things these people who supposedly really love Sweden discussed, was how they could perhaps create some sort of campaign website to try and incide violence among migrants, and possibly incite terror attacks. Like, how do you reconcile your "patriotism and love for your country" with wanting people to perform terror attacks?
Were I to play devil's advocate I'd say that it's possible that they were just shooting the shit, but even then? Isn't it a bit over the top? As a gay guy I'm not joking about conversion therapy or forcible sterilisations.

The article in question basically claims that rapid-onset gender dysphoria is an actual phenomenon because the author polled parents of children on a transphobic forum, about whether or not the child "becoming trans" was a sudden event. There are multiple problems with this
The parents are the source of supposed truth
The parents likely have an inherent bias (being that they are on a transphobic forum)
It is possible - and in my opinion - plausible that the parents experience it as having a "rapid onset" because the children spent a lot of time hiding this aspect of themselves from the parents because the parents express LGBT+ phobic views. I concealed many parts of my personality from my abusive mother, and I know several trans people who didn't come out to their parents until such a time they felt it safe to do so.
From the parents perspective their kid moved out (e.g. to uni) and spontaneously changed gender from one day to the next, but at that stage their friends had been referring to them by their chosen names and pronouns for years.
This is what I took away from it as well. The fact that she so readily quoted really biased and disputed articles and presented them as though they carried as much weight as the actual science sat really wrong with me. She clearly didn't spend very long looking into the articles she presented.
It makes me think of LLMs, really. She talks with authority about a lot of subjects, but ultimately she's a physicist. Sure, she's scientifically literate and that can be used to make sense of articles and studies in other disciplines, at least to an extent. However, it doesn't make her an authority in any of those disciplines. Then there's the time constraint to keep in mind as well; she might be able to analyse the literature and give a sensible take on the matter, but not when her schedule involves making one ~5 minute video on any given topic per day.

There's lots of things we can't isolate ourselves from. Natural disasters, for example. We see forest fires and floods on a yearly basis, and it's getting worse. We'll face droughts, and diminished crop yields. It'll be particularly bad for all the areas near the equator (which are also incredibly populous and export a lot of food), and what will happen then?
Famine yes, probably, but likely also an exodus away from these areas, which I'm sure will go well as countries are known to welcome people seeking a better life with open arms. We'll face humanitarian tragedies. I'd be surprised if there won't be camps, and with that comes disease. Maybe we'll even see another pandemic.
It even starts with the simple fact that people are simply not willing to get rid of their cars, even if public transport was good and completely free. So you’d be left with enforcing people not to drive, which is obviously also not going to happen for the same reasons.
Induced demand can work in reverse. Stop expanding roads. Redesignate some lanes to public transport only. Why take the car and sit in a queue for 2 hours when a bus can get you to work in 30 minutes without any queues?

We don't know that. If it turns out that the actual ECS value is higher than predicted we're already fucked because whatever faction we might take today should've already been taken decades ago. If a global humanitarian crisis is mere decades away, no changes we'll feasibly make today or in the near future will stave it off.

An alternative is also that those who can, do their job remotely. Covid proved the feasibility of that. You couldn't pay me enough to start commuting or doing my own grocery runs again. I only go outside for enjoyment and none of it involves vehicles. Unless said vehicle is a bicycle, because my dog really enjoys cycling.
I swapped back to Firefox a couple of months ago. I am of the opinion that all browsers ought use the same engine, but Google shouldn't be given more of a chokehole on the web than they already have. It's troubling enough as it is.
That said, Firefox not supporting basic things like selectively turning off JS for websites, or vertical tabs without using wonky and inelegant third party extensions (and ui-chrome editing!) is honestly ridiculous.
