A problem as old as the hills. I solved that problem many years ago by moving away from KDE, lol. Sorry I have no applicable advice.

Cover/remove any brand name labels. Duct tape and spray paint are ugly. Use them.

Lock it to something solid. Use multiple, high quality locks if you can. Lock it where there is video surveillance if possible. Never leave it long. Never ever leave it outside overnight.

Greetings from Berlin, where more than 25,000 bikes are stolen each year. That's 70 per day, or 3 per hour.

Despite following my own advise above as best I could, I have lost 3 bikes in the last 20 years. I still ride a bike everywhere though, 100% of the time, averaging over 5000 km a year.

Get out there and explore your city!

Edited to add, a good lock is going to cost a lot more than a standard one, and will easily weigh over 5kg.

If memtest is showing errors, something is wrong with the RAM. Either the voltage or timing are incorrectly set in BIOS, or maybe overclocked, or one of the sticks isn't seated properly, or defective. Try memtest with one RAM stick at a time with recommended voltage/timing to rule out a defective stick.

Where are the good political songs? (piped.video)

I feel like there are lots of parallels between the eighties and now (recession/inflation, yuppies/inequality, skin-heads/fascists, hot-cold wars etc.) but there used to be protest music! Where is that stuff now? Music that's intelligent and outraged - like we should be!...

Threads (1984) (archive.org)

Threads is a 1984 British-Australian apocalyptic war drama television film jointly produced by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc. I have had random issues for the last 2 years where the active bluetooth adapter just vanishes suddenly and cannot be revived without a reboot (or oddly sometimes sleeping and re-awakening works). Some kernels are better than others, but it has never completely gone away. Often it is fine for days or even weeks of uptime, then it will occasionally crash within minutes or hours of booting. I use it for a mouse, which simply stops working mid-use.

In my case it's a built-in adapter that's tied to an internal USB hub, and it is the entire USB hub that is crashing and vanishing. When it happens dmesg says the hub is no longer accepting the address assigned. Error 62 and or 110.

This is on a Lenovo Thinkpad currently running anywhere from kernel 5.15 to 6.5 with the same random issue.

The same setup works fine for me with no such error messages appearing.

Howard Zinn people's history of America, I'm reading it at the moment, is there any alternative?

Hello, I'm Italian and I'm reading what I understood to be a classic in American HIstory. I'm throug 100 pagesi in and I have the feeling that the author is a bit too partisan and unbalanced. Sometimes I feel that he had already decided what happened and then he tries to find facts that confirm his prejudices....

Is there a way to get call functionality in whatsapp in Linux

I have been finding a way to get video/audio call working on Linux for some time. however whatsapp doesn't have an "official" client for Linux so I am kinda stuck in the web version of whatsapp but the web version doesn't have calling functionality which is bummer since all of my friends uses whatsapp and I want to be able to...

I have made voice calls with this in VirtualBox from a Linux host. Lacking support for VBoxGuestAdditions, it is not a great general solution, as you cannot easily bridge the gap between host/guest, however.

I have not tested QEMU.

I use a static html custom tab page to load from (not a bookmark) and lemmy is the only site that has this issue. Latest FF, Ungoogled-Chromium, normal Chromium - all behave the same. I also randomly end up ‘not logged in’ when opening lemmy threads in new tabs. Not always, but sometimes. Refresh always fixes it.

Way faster than the the old 14.4. I remember when the 28.8 came out and I plunked that $200 down on the counter as fast as I could get it out of my pocket.

    Planting trees.

    despotic_machine ,
    @despotic_machine@lemmy.world avatar

Both 😆 . I started with guerilla gardening, noticed trees are left alone more than small plants, then eventually bought some land where I now have about a thousand trees, some were there, most I have planted. It’s a permaculture-ish food forest incorporating regenerative Ag and carbon capture in the making.

I have a little nursery area where I sprout seeds and grow seedlings of all kind of trees and bushes and give them away and plant them wherever I can.

That is typically the only solution as far as I know. I had this issue, resolved it in the BIOS, then I remapped a couple file manager shortcuts to avoid having to use the FN+ combo altogether, for the most part anyway.

[Thread] Recommend me devastatingly sad songs? Please?

So I’ve always noticed when I’m as down as I can get, I find comfort is music that most people find super depressing all the way to unbearably depressing. Like slit-your-wrists depressing. Songs you’d expect to find someone hanging from a noose in their home on repeat to. These kinds of songs bring comfort because they...

Sites for downloading high quality music files

I am making a script that can download high quality music files, currently from free-mp3-download.net and slavart.gamesdrive.net. Are there any others? You could start the browser form the terminal and see if it throws any output that is useful in determining what is going on.

I have never seen such an issue myself, but would check the video drivers and any associated options like v/g/free-sync. Also try toggling the window manager’s compositing functionality.

That is normal output. A return of 0 means it was successful. No errors there.

In general, I recommend adding Jackett to qbittorrent. It works great and is much better than the standard search add-ons.

For this specific request, AudioBook Bay has a 30 lesson Dutch section (in a large general pack) and is dated 2022 (also available via Jackett in qbittorrent).

No, it still wants a login before it will play the track. Thanks for trying though. I looked it up elsewhere and played it. Nice recommend. Thanks.
