I've been quite happy with my Steam Deck - both as a gaming console and as a secondary computer when it's docked, but for newer titles I picked up a Rog Zephyrus M16 (2023) last year....
Arch, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, atomic Fedora based like Bazzite, (maybe Nix, Void, Clear Linux)
should all work fine. I wouldn't recommend any distros with an update period of over 6 months like Debian or Ubuntu LTS though. Easiest way yo get going would probably be either Fedora KDE Spin or OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.
I'm a long time Windows user who has experience with WSL. Last year, I needed a laptop for university, and out of laziness, opted for a Macbook since, although they're expensive as hell, are reasonably reliable....
Arch, OpenSUSE TW, and Debian Sid are pretty good. As a desktop/WM I'd recommend Hyprland, Plasma, or DWL. Hyprland and DWL take some time to set up and get used to though. GNOME is sort of a pain in the ass, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you use touch gestures a lot.

No, the defaults are worse than the arch defaults, the wallpapers are ugly, dracut has worse documentation for desktop use, yay is bad, and the firewall GUI is pointless bloat (the thing on the KDE settings app is just better). Just use Arch.
