“Baker’s brave defense of her community’s right to read is a testament to the vital role librarians play in upholding free speech and creative expression in the face of censorship.”
Last year on Mastodon we featured this story from the BBC about Gladstone's Library, the U.K.'s only residential library. Fediverse folk were so enthusiastic that when we discovered the library is offering scholarships to be taken in 2025, we had to share the information (see the second link in this post for all the details).
@CultureDesk@bookstodon It is worth warning folks who are thinking of visiting that it is full of the raceism (both casual and overt) of the time. Think carefully who you take there and go with that in mind.
On March 11, 2024, I announced the shutdown of our Mastodonbooks.net server and the migration of our project to Mastodon.social. That process is now complete.

Hi Roger -- I seem to have missed the migration notification. Does that mean my account on the old server is now inaccessible? Which means I have to start all over again? This is an old account I forgot I had. If there's some way I can transfer the old posts, followers etc, please let me know. One of my followers there claims she can still browse through my posts.
Thanks! R.
I've got some audiobook credits before I cancel my account (just not worth it when the #library is there 🥰). Could someone recommend some good audiobooks?
What I am looking for:
✔️Cozy mysteries or cozy horror
✔️If romance, nothing 🌶️ because I can't listen to sex scenes being narrated to me without giggling like a middle schooler.
✔️Female main character = bonus
✔️POC protagonist = bonus
✔️YA or New Adult recs okay
A year or so later, I got it as an Audiobook and am amazed at the level of depth and understanding of the characters, the setting of 1900 New York City, and the writer's ability to get inside the minds of a Jinni, a creature of Fire born in the desert, and the Golem, a creature of clay built to serve her master, able to read minds and desires of those around her with the strength of 10 men.
I'm excited to learn there's a sequel. Thanks for that.
@mvilain@SallyStrange@himantra@bookstodon@horror Yes! Both The Golem and the Jinni, and its sequel are wonderful "Must Own The Print Copy" books for me. The stories deal with some tough subjects at times, but with so much compassion that they are a pleasure to read.
3 hours silent work in #Library was bliss. Then decided to treat myself to a cappucino so popped into shopping centre next door. Holy moly the assault on my #Senses was immediate and intense.
Thank goodness I had my #Loops or I would now be a dysregulated mess. @actuallyautistic #Autistic
