“Baker’s brave defense of her community’s right to read is a testament to the vital role librarians play in upholding free speech and creative expression in the face of censorship.”

New today: In Llano County, a local librarian fought back against prompting a federal court fight and national recognition but losing the job of her dreams. https://www.texasobserver.org/library-books-censorship-smalltown-texas/

Last year on Mastodon we featured this story from the BBC about Gladstone's Library, the U.K.'s only residential library. Fediverse folk were so enthusiastic that when we discovered the library is offering scholarships to be taken in 2025, we had to share the information (see the second link in this post for all the details).

And adjacent health and public washrooms for folks who read and use the library but don't have a house to live in.

@CultureDesk @bookstodon It is worth warning folks who are thinking of visiting that it is full of the raceism (both casual and overt) of the time. Think carefully who you take there and go with that in mind.

Hi Roger -- I seem to have missed the migration notification. Does that mean my account on the old server is now inaccessible? Which means I have to start all over again? This is an old account I forgot I had. If there's some way I can transfer the old posts, followers etc, please let me know. One of my followers there claims she can still browse through my posts.
Thanks! R.

I think you can check the posts from your old server also from your current account here, at mastodon.social.

If you enter your username @richarddenooy in the search field, it should pop up. (Even when you can't log in there anymore)

I've got some audiobook credits before I cancel my account (just not worth it when the is there 🥰). Could someone recommend some good audiobooks?

What I am looking for:
✔️Cozy mysteries or cozy horror
✔️If romance, nothing 🌶️ because I can't listen to sex scenes being narrated to me without giggling like a middle schooler.
✔️Female main character = bonus
✔️POC protagonist = bonus
✔️YA or New Adult recs okay

Thanks! 🙏🏽

@SallyStrange @himantra @bookstodon @horror It was a prime example of a book so good I didn't want to finish it. I got within the last chapter then stopped.

A year or so later, I got it as an Audiobook and am amazed at the level of depth and understanding of the characters, the setting of 1900 New York City, and the writer's ability to get inside the minds of a Jinni, a creature of Fire born in the desert, and the Golem, a creature of clay built to serve her master, able to read minds and desires of those around her with the strength of 10 men.

I'm excited to learn there's a sequel. Thanks for that.

@mvilain @SallyStrange @himantra @bookstodon @horror Yes! Both The Golem and the Jinni, and its sequel are wonderful "Must Own The Print Copy" books for me. The stories deal with some tough subjects at times, but with so much compassion that they are a pleasure to read.

I miss these Play Away devices! Offline, easy to use, and, better yet, offline! Sure the sound quality wasn't amazing, but it's far better than fighting with the app sometimes! https://playaway.com/audiobooks/ @audiobooks
