I’m excited for this. His second verse alone channels how I feel today. Can’t imagine this getting a lot of praise with the Lemmy crowd.

This was the very first Outkast track I ever heard!

Still goes hard all these years later.

No disrespect, but this isn't Trap, neither was that song by Eminem and Logic.Trap is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in the Southern United States, with lyrical references to trap starting in 1991 but the modern sound of trap appearing in 1999. The genre gets its name from the Atlanta slang term "trap house", a house used exclusively to sell drugs.

Trap also applies to a subgenre or EDM now, but my point is putting "conscious rap" and "trap" as the genres of the same song is a bit of an oxymoron, unless they are rapping about selling drugs that expand your consciousness.

The song “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar has made significant waves in the music industry since its release in 2017. Known for its catchy beat and thought-provoking lyrics, the track explores various themes and offers an insight into Lamar’s perspective on society, success, and self-confidence.

In essence, “Humble” serves as a commentary on the current state of hip-hop culture, as well as a call for individuals to embrace their own flaws and prioritize humility over arrogance. The song’s opening line, “Wicked or weakness, you gotta see this,” sets the stage for Lamar’s exploration of the dichotomy between good and evil, strength and vulnerability.

https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-humble-by-kendrick-lamar/

On the ironically braggadocious track “HUMBLE.” Kendrick Lamar challenges his competition. It was released a week after the first promotional single, “The Heart Part 4,” with a music video directed by Dave Meyers and The Little Homies. It features religious imagery mixed with urban life, such as Kendrick in priest’s robes and a moving re-enactment of Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper—juxtaposing this with the concept of humility in the chorus.

On a religious note, the song could also be a reference to the verse James 4:7.

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

—Thus linking to April 7th, the date Kendrick told the industry to have their shit together.

Mike WiLL Made-It produced the beat. It features a deep piano riff and a banging 808 bass line. This style of production is a departure from the sound of Kendrick’s previous jazz-influenced project, To Pimp a Butterfly. It seems to reference the character Deebo’s theme song from the popular comedy movie Friday (1995). Kendrick is also shown riding through the neighborhood on a bicycle in the music video, similar to Deebo in Friday.

The song debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 22, 2017, making it not only the highest charting song for Kendrick, but also one of the highest debuting hip-hop singles since “Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem. The song later hit No. 1 on the chart on June 5, 2017, making it Lamar’s first solo No. 1 song and second No. 1 song overall on the charts.

I used to love Prof. He puts on a hell of a live show, and I've seen him a bunch of times including at Soundset. I kind of stopped listening after I went through some shit and found myself genre hopping (or at least sub genre) but I think maybe it's time I picked him up again. Does anyone know if he's a creep or anything though? I've heard some stuff and I wouldn't be surprised honestly but I want to give him another shot if he's not.

steeznson , in Eminem - Houdini [Official Music Video]

Not a huge Eminem fan. Although I have to admit the first CD I ever bought was Encore and maybe that poisoned the well. I thought this was good!

Appreciated that the lyrics weren't yelled like many (many!) of his recent tracks. The hook was good. I think it's been long enough for a throwback to be acceptable.

“Homicide" is the third single released from Logic’s 2019 album, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

The track exhibits Logic and Eminem’s rapid-fire flows. The title seems to assert that they are lyrically murdering their detractors and non-lyrical rappers.

In a 2018 interview with HardKnockTV, Logic shared his thoughts on Eminem and his desire to collaborate with him:

It was awesome […] to be recognized by one of my favorite MCs of all time, one of my favorite artists […] I fuck with him. I want to work with him. I want to do a song with him. I think that could be pretty cool.

“Houdini” serves as the lead single to Eminem’s twelfth studio album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The track is named after Harry Houdini, a popular magician known for his death-defying stunts like the Chinese Water Torture Cell, which Eminem replicates in the intro to his 1999 track, “Role Model.”

With the return of long-time collaborator Jeff Bass of the Bass Brothers, Eminem revisits his catchy albeit morbid sound of the early 2000s. This fanfare track sees him callback to his old catchphrases such as Shady’s iconic “Guess who’s back?” line from the 2002 track “Without Me.”. The backing track for the song is also taken from the song [Abracadabra] written by the Steve Miller Band in 1973.

On October 24th, 1926, Houdini tragically passed away in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 52. Interestingly, Detroit is also the hometown of Eminem, who turns 52 in October 2024.

The single was first teased by Eminem on May 20, 2024, when he posted a teaser to his social media accounts with a text message from “All Contacts” stating:

…and for my last trick!

The text message would also have a date of May 31, sparking rumours of Eminem releasing music on that day.

On May 28, 2024, Eminem would post a video to Instagram of him on a FaceTime call with magician David Blaine. At the end of the video, Eminem announced the release of “Houdini” on May 31, then closed out by stating “for my last trick, I’m gonna make my career disappear,” hinting at The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) being his final studio album.

I'm actually not sure if he is working with Bass again. The song is produced by Eminem and long-time collaborator Luis Resto.
Bass is listed alongside all writers of Without Me as a writer for this track, which is probably because it heavily interpolates from that song.

Now, let’s dive into the meaning behind the song “Squad Goals” by Prof. This energetic and upbeat track showcases the confidence and swagger of the artist. The chorus repeats the line “I got guns, hoes, money, dro, cars, boats, you should know, dogs, bros, squad goals, hold up, whoa, you name it.” These lyrics may initially seem brash and materialistic, but there is more to the song than meets the eye.

Nice, I see 'The Coup', I approve!

Told in first person, this is the story of a boy, his prostitute momma, and her evil pimp. Fear, sex, money, poverty, history repeating itself, violence against women, revenge, and redemption are just some of the poignant themes we experience through Boots Riley’s gritty narrative

Seems pretty mid and derivative.

Microw OP ,

Em usually has one derivative song on his albums. I'm guessing that this one is the album opener.

motor_spirit ,

hopefully. He literally spoon feeds the concept in the video "could this be some sort of hybrid?!"

I didn't like this much on its own, as a song, but the video took me right back to waiting for My Name Is on TRL

That damn sample is too goofy and easily stuck in my head
