Dog Tooth was also pretty uncomfortable viewing!

Idk I found Poor Things challenging but ultimately it's supposed to be a piece of art as opposed to like a moral authority on human sexuality. The setup is so clearly outlandish that it's hard to claim it has an opinion on real world sex issues.

Some of the scenes were a bit sexploitation-y though, like there was a definite male gaze aspect to the direction. I'm more sympathetic to the description of it being crass or a bit tasteless in some places as opposed to describing it as morally problematic.

Favourite patient modern game?

A bit of a weird title, but basically what’s a game that’s more than a year old but still considered “modern” that you love? There’s no real strict definition for modern, I’d just like to see some discussion around great games that aren’t quite classics yet (but probably will be one day)....

Control is a really special game. I only got around to playing it last year but it was a wild ride!

I hope Alan Wake 2 goes on sale later this year so I can scoop that up. I got about halfway through AW1 (after getting it for ~£2 on steam) but the gameplay was too repetitive for me in the end.

I'd say SMT4 on the 3DS is a good starting point if you wanted to dive in head-first to the mainline series. Otherwise maybe Persona 3 Reloaded for the Persona games.

Edit: A curveball good entry to the series would be Devil Survivor for the Nintendo DS. It's extremely easy to emulate with modern phones, physical copies are not as expensive as the 3DS games (but still expensive) and there is no region lock on DS so you have some lattitude to shop around if you want to use original hardware. In some ways that game does Persona better than the Persona games do, all while having a classic SMT mainline story of law vs chaos.

steeznson ,

Persona is heavier on story, has dating sim elements and operates off a calendar system to progress the story Hard to explain the calendar system but essentially events are timeboxed and there can be dead time if you finish the main mission quickly. Persona games try to emulate an anime.

SMT is the original series. Easier to explain: it's like pokemon with mythological creatures and a light philosophy story. I don't know if I'd recommend starting with SMT 1 or 2, even if they are arguably some of the best in the series

I don't think 3 is that hard if you are familiar with Press Turn but the Matador fight is a filter for people who have not learned buffs/debuffs. All of the games tend to get easier as you progress.

Not a huge Eminem fan. Although I have to admit the first CD I ever bought was Encore and maybe that poisoned the well. I thought this was good!

Appreciated that the lyrics weren't yelled like many (many!) of his recent tracks. The hook was good. I think it's been long enough for a throwback to be acceptable.

Meta is a complete dumpster fire

Nothing profound here, just need to vent: I haven't used Facebook for several years now, but I just got my 10 year old son a Meta Quest 2 and had to activate it by linking to my Facebook account. Just two days later I got a warning that the account will be locked because they detected that a child was using the Quest with an...

steeznson ,

My mate has a Quest 2 and he's only been able to use it twice due to system updates forcing him to re-login with his FB account which has somehow become dislocated from his Meta account.

steeznson ,

Why do they assume we are all huge fans of Gollum? Like that dogshit videogame from last year wasn't enough

steeznson ,

Upvoted for a hot take. I think I agree with you about the first one - it's kinda like a western but it's low budget in a way that has aged badly* and overstays its welcome.

*Easy Rider would be an example of a low budget film that has aged well imo

Do Nitter forks exist?

I am not a fan of Twitter, but sometimes I would like to visit a Twitter profile, unfortunately due to Twitter restrictions it is currently not possible to view anything without an account, and clearly I am not going to create a Twitter account for that, are there any forks in development that are trying to solve these Twitter...

steeznson ,

Yeah to me xitter is still a viable news source from certain journalists. Also just having friends send meme threads or whatever is annoying when you can't read it.

I've found that some of the nitter mirrors still work every so often when their rate limits reset but it's not ideal - https://nitter.privacydev.net/

Unfortunately I can't see an obvious way that a fork of nitter would not encounter the same issues with the xitter API aggressively blocking/limiting scraping and GET requests.

Different genre but it reminds me of Pillars of Eternity in the way it trades on nostalgia, and then ports the old gameplay systems - warts and all - to modern consoles

steeznson ,

Gentoo is a good alternative to this - at least after you are done setting it up you will have a useable, updateable OS.

steeznson ,

I think some of the hate is from the main systemd dev, Poettering, being so abrasive on social media. He's got a hateboner for certain distros (which don't ship with systemd as the default).

steeznson ,

PS2 coincided with a lot of good handhelds too. Nintendo DS is a strong contender for best handheld ever, IMO.

steeznson ,

My first console was an original GameBoy and I probably got the most hours of use out of it compared to any other console. Despite the horrific backlight (lack thereof) and small screen. I love handheld gaming in general. Still play my 3DS all the time.

steeznson ,

The rust standard lib uses unsafe in various places too. Even if you avoided every other category of error in your code logic, you could still end up with UB.

steeznson ,

There is some nuance to the R Kelly thing. From what I understand the issue he had was that Spotify were delisting tracks from notable black abusers but not touching any of the white abuser backcatalogues. However, the nuance wouldn't really matter to make a good rebuttal in a track.

Drake sounds tired in this track tbh. Suspect this might be the last thing he releases.

So far I've heard everything from Japanese rappers, to little kids to Masego dropping a saxophone diss on this beat. It's all been very amusing.
