@actuallyautistic
What kind of music do y’all like?

I’ve found that my music taste sometimes mimics that of my friends, but generally I listen to completely different stuff than most people. I love heavy metal, folk/bluegrass, anything indie, 50’s-80’s music, and a lot of traditional songs from the Renaissance, Middle Ages, and earlier. I also like Christian hymns but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Would love to expand my own tastes by hearing from y’all!

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic The genre I enjoy the most is Retrowave, followed by Epicore and several computer game soundtracks. All of them have in common that they normally don't have any singing in them which allows me to use them when I need to get into hyperfocus.

There's also industrial and metal, but I usually only listen to those when I don't have to focus on something.

I can stim to all of those genres.

The best way to know what I like is just to go down the Stimming Is Life playlists. I stim to this music just about every day.

It is a tiny bit restrictive in that there's music that I like, but that is not at the right tempo for taking a walk and I usually don't include it in my playlists.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Mostly chillwave nowadays, sometimes videogame soundtracks.
Currently I'm tempted to listen to what's already out from the soundtrack of Angeline Era.

@hauchvonstaub @actuallyautistic I like to listen to a lot of video game soundtracks too. One of my recent favorites has been the soundtrack to the game Abyssal (it’s on Roblox lol). It’s amazing and fits the theme of the game perfectly.

My musical tastes are quite varied. From classical to 1970s jazz fusion to industrial. . Pop and mainstream music doesn't interest me. I find myself often listening to a specific artist for a while and then moving on to someone else.

Currently in my rotation are:

Amon Tobin, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, KMFDM, Lonnie Liston Smith, Miles Davis, Opeth, and Weather Report.

@peteorrall @actuallyautistic I love a lot of Hancock’s music! I’ll have to look into the other artists.

I’m also right there with you as far as mainstream music being uninteresting.

You'd love Jaco Pastorius! As a jazz bassist, he changed bass permanently. It speaks volumes when Herbie Hancock was the pianist on his debut album. He also played bass for Weather Report, the fusion supergroup.

Weather Report's 1976 album Black Market was the first to feature Jaco Pastorius. Many of the WR personnel also played with Miles Davis. Black Market is an amazing album.

As for the others, they have such a vast catalog and a significant impact on music, it's difficult to know where to start.

Amon Tobin is an incredible Brazilian electronic music producer whose face-melting sound design techniques takes the art to the furthest edges of the universe. "Out From Out Where" is a great album to start.

KMFDM is a socially and politically conscious industrial band. They, however, are not without a sense of humor and wit. 23 albums over 40 years and have transcended genres. Their 90s albums "Angst," "Nihil," and "Symbols" are excellent as are their more recent albums, "Hell Yeah" and "Hyena."
