    Belt Of Venus

    "An hour of quiet shortly shall we see;
    Till then in patience our proceeding be."

    This atmospheric phenomenon is visible during civil twilight, above the anti-solar point. The sunlight scattered by fine particulates causes the rosy arch of the Belt to shine high in the atmosphere.

    A photo of a snow- and ice-covered coastal landscape. The viewpoint is from a parking area, tyre tracks in the snow show that others have stopped here recently. On the right is a mountainside with craggy black rock and scree, coated in snow. In the distance is another promontory, with similar icy dark rock jutting out into a flat calm sea. The water is semi-frozen. The sky above is completely clear but, as it fades down to meet the horizon, the colour is gradually changing from cyan through near-white to a pale peach colour and finally an orange-hued line just above the sea. This colour is reflected across the water surface.

    Sunset in September. Queen's View, possibly named after Queen Isabella, wife of Robert the Bruce. A spectacular view over Loch Tummel to Schiehallion and beyond.

    A photo of a valley, with a still loch running from lower left to top right of the shot. The distance is misty, and the low light has converted the mountain flanks into silhouettes. A line of dark trees is masking the view from the top right corner to the middle centre, and the water is lit more strongly in the distance by the setting sun, which isn't visible. The cloud is quite heavy but the light filtering through is soft pastel pink, the rest of the scene is in a cyan and blue palette. It's tranquil, and very calm.

The sky is grey and cloudy, and a mountain on the opposite side of the water is cloud-capped. The viewpoint is from a roadside, high above the water surface. The rough tarmac road is to the right of the shot and drops steeply to hairpin bends lower down. There is no barrier at the road's edge, only snow poles. The scene is tranquil and peaceful.

    Herðubreið (1682m/) a volcanic tuya in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park, in the Highlands of in the east of the Ódáðahraun desert.

    A photo of a landscape, in the centre is an unusually shaped mountain. The scene is lit from the left. The foreground is brown vegetation, with white frost visible in the shaded parts. The sky above is clear and very pale cyan, suggesting deep cold, and there is little cloud except at the top of the mountain. The peak itself is frosted with snow and ice, and a tuft of cloud is pointing away from one side like an inverted beard. The top third of the mountain has almost vertical sides, the lower shoulders are more gently sloped and gradually flatten out to ground level. It's distinctive, and very lovely.
