Glacial Motion

Svínafellsjökull ("Pig Mountain Glacier") in the midday sunshine, farm buildings at its foot lending scale.

The dark lobe near ground level at the snout is from a landslide - the glacier shrinkage has left the side walls dangerously unsupported, and the collapse is accelerating the melt of the ice beneath.

A photo of a landscape, lit from the right. The foreground is greyish-brown vegetation, the viewpoint is from a road which curves away to the left. The sky is showing some blue patches but is quite full of cloud, and these are obscuring the peak of a mountain. Sunlit slopes are shining through the clouds though, and snow- and ice-covered crags can be seen. To the right of centre is the top of a cascade of ice; this is the glacier. It drops between two dark rock mountain faces and down to ground level. Scattered at its base are buildings, looking tiny in comparison.
