It's a studio apartment so there is no dedicated bedroom just one all-purpose room. For some of those apartments a rope is all you could cram or afford.

At, had to zoom way in to see the detail. From the thumbnail it was just a weird silhouette.

Wood paneling is one thing but this looks like hardwood. Rather than do a wall it looks great on the ceiling.

Also, does NY have rules about separating a WC from a kitchen with a wall/corridor?

I've lived in a flat that didn't but it's against regs in the UK. It was cheap as well.

Nah lol. It still has an oven and 4 burners on the stove. A proper NY apartment is just a hot plate precariously perched on top of the radiator
