Google Fit dev APIs shutdown set for June 2025 ( 9to5google.com )

Google’s migration guide for developers lists what they’re supposed to switch to on Android phones and Wear OS. However, there is no replacement for the Goals API that lets Google Fit users set “how many steps and heart points they want to aim for each day.”

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones,...

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 ( www.theverge.com )

Apple has announced that its Messages app will support the RCS messaging standard in iOS 18. RCS offers more advanced features compared to traditional SMS, including higher-quality media, typing indicators, and end-to-end encryption. This move will improve messaging between iOS and Android devices, which currently rely on the...

I noticed a white hue on the top of the screen and ONLY on the homescreen. I thought it was a Fairphone 5 issue, but now i noticed it on my Nothing Phone 2a (photo)as well. What is it? ( lemmy.world )

After i got my Fairphone back from the repaircenter (they thought there was something wrong with it), they told me it was an intended design. However, i see other people mention they don't have it.

Rant: vanilla local app search is ridiculously bad

For a search company I can't believe how terrible the Android app search is. I can't even search "bank" for my banking apps, and there doesn't really seem to be any metadata except for the title that goes into the search. Which is absolutely ridiculous given how many companies name their apps something cReAtIvE like "home" or...

Unlocking the bootloader of some Qualcomm devices when the display is broken, PoC ( github.com )

Just thought I'd share. Probably nothing new or fancy, but may help some of you find a way to repurpose devices that aren't worth repairing into home servers or something: e.g. op5 I've used has better CPU compared to raspberry pi 4, can run linux (postmarketos, albeit with some caveats), and costs less if bought with broken...

Do old phones just sound better?

So I've been messing around with a few phones lately, a nexus 6p, a pixel 3a xl, and a s21 ultra, and I've noticed that on the 6p and 3a xl both sound louder, punchier, and clearer when compared to the s21 ultra. They also both have that thicc notch design with a massive speakerphone which might add to the high volume levels.
