I won't support any streaming service that has a sub+ad tier. Ads with no sub or sub no ads, anything else is incredibly greedy and the same as cable TV.

What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

There's been at least 5 mass extinction events we are aware of where I think over 80% of all species become extinct. I'd probably guess one or more of those could do the trick.

Every labor shortage is a capital shortage. If you compensate better for pretty much any job people will work them. It's employers trying to shift the blame, but if they want 500 widgets but can only afford to employ enough staff to make 50 widgets it's not the employees fault they didn't get an extra 450 widgets for free, labor doesn't work that way.

Not a designer but I would suggest getting a lamp to light from above/in front and a led bulb you can change the color on to try out different colors, blue or gold color are usually decent. But having the ability to dial in the color is useful to make it suit your tastes. I've found some nice lamps at yard or estate sales for cheap.

I'm using sync and if an image post doesn't load i see an error, but if a comment with just an image doesn't load it just looks like a blank comment. I've checked the site a few times and usually the image loads on the site, or if you touch the blank post where an image would be and sometimes that gets it to show up.

As someone who conferenced some basic ML research in early 2000s and then left academia for a boring/stable software engineering gig in a non IT org to escape the hype bubble only to end up having to talk to people about ML/AI frequently this article speaks to me.

Biometrics are not secret and should not be used in place of passwords. They are identity like a user name. It's the same problem with orgs trying to use ssn as a security challenge, with all the beaches pretty much everyone's is already public knowledge.

If you're asking why wealthy people run to Switzerland specifically I have to assume it is in part due to the history of banks that make disclosing ownership a crime making them useful to hide capital in offshore accounts to dodge taxes in their home country, stash money related to crime or exploitation, laundering, etc. While their money may be stored anonymously once they show up in person they themselves are no longer anonymous and subject to arrest.

Even if god exists religion can't possibly be the way to god

So I thought about this in the shower amd it makes sense to me, like praying and stuff never worked for most people I know, so a direkt link to god gotta be unlikely. That made me conclude that religion is probably fake, no matter if there's a god or not. Also people speaking to the same god being given a different set of rules...

whotookkarl ,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

It's not that intercessory prayer needs to work 100% to be convincing, it just needs to beat random chance and it doesn't do that.

Natural processes can describe how those things came to exist without needing to appeal to supernatural claims or gods.

You've seen things you attribute to a god, but people in other religions attribute the same things to their god and so far I don't think anyone has shown empirical evidence for any gods, and I don't know about you but I use empirical evidence when changing my confidence on whether something or someone exists or doesn't.

Many people have a negative opinion on organized religion because we can see the negative effects believing things without sufficient evidence can have on individuals and communities.

What song should I play for my bathroom neighbors?

The work bathroom is currently a warzone, on their phone speakers people like to play music, play games at full blast, and one guy likes to chill to ambient rainforest. What song can I play to passive aggressively make it known that I don't want to listen to their tik tok feeds while I work out my demons?

Equivocating cryptocurrency, block chain tech, and bitcoin is disingenuous to say none of that exists like fairies or Santa Claus. It exists just as much as PGP or AES or the deficit does. It's dumb to think any of that is going to launch you to extreme wealth or solve everyone's problems, but it is a good way to try to prevent governments from using that currency issuance power in ways their citizens would prefer they did not.

Even if you don't agree with the politics it is a pretty interesting technology for consensus building between potentially adverse participants. Someone with experience maintaining open source repos could at least appreciate that aspect.

whotookkarl ,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

I don't think anything we've seen yet solves wealth inequality, but whether that becomes a property of a currency or not may change.

I agree voting is important for governance but what if citizens held that specific power by default instead of the government, and if the government wanted to use that power they would require asking for it? It's the same people doing the voting but for a specific measure instead of a representative. I didn't think we're there yet but that being a possibility seems hopeful.

I definitely made some assumptions, I'd probably do well to read a bit more and comment a bit less. No harm just down votes let me know there's plenty more to learn

whotookkarl ,

My assumption is economic in that they will continue to spend as oil and hydrocarbon fuels dependency drops worldwide as it's replaced with renewables. It seems dogmatic organizations like religions, theocracies, etc tend to do poorly with incremental change, but we'll see over the next couple decades. 30% of their trade is with China so it largely depends on Chinese markets and how/if they decide to change as the markets change.

If anarchists are often misunderstood I'd imagine libertarians even more so. Both philosophies advocate for the lack of a state, splitting between preference towards the community/collective vs individual, and are often misinterpreted to mean every thing the state does or should provide today can't exist without it.

It is a "door bell" literally, I think we just associate doorbells with electricity because the mechanical ones created in the late 1800s weren't around long historically before electricity was widely available. They had pull strings, buttons with springs to strike the bell, etc

Yes, if you consider more than one issue (X, Y, Z) when deciding who or who not to vote for you are a multi issue voter, if you only consider a single issue (X) when deciding who or who not to vote for, you are a single issue voter. It's not per candidate, it's per vote.

Didn't read the article, did Nintendo pay to develop this to be able to preserve the games history and release them for free so they can get some new fans for these retro games and IPs to maybe encourage them to buy some newer released games in the same series?

Maybe it was written that way to make you read faster as you get toward the end to convey a sense of facetiousness because I didn't need to read the article to know none of that's true, who knows. I'm probably just spending too much time online lately.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

I think there's also a general age demographic shift down as the mods and people who care about moderation, third party apps, bots, etc left. Something similar happened during the digg exodus where social norms and consensus around some topics changed, just not at much with the bots at the time. People who remain may not care, or they just may be unaware. There was always some propaganda blindness too in the 'i don't use social media just reddit' crowd.

White phosphorus is incredibly easy to obtain in small volumes (if you have a matchbook you already have some red phosphorus), and in larger volumes it's found in some pretty common minerals. Unfortunately the possible damage done or weapons use of a material isn't always reflected in how difficult it is to obtain. According to the ACS 900,000 tons are produced annually & mostly used in fertilizer and pesticide.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying "woke", "critical race theory", ""grooming"", and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

whotookkarl ,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

Hate requires you to consider them first competent with shared common values that inform their beliefs and actions. Otherwise it's mostly pity and disgust that they have no values other than authority and loyalty like a criminal enterprise, and usually can't tell if they are being evil on purpose or by accident/inaction/ignorance.
