I've been advocating right to repair and have been trying to raise the alarm bells to stuff like this. Unfortunately people have been blind to it and keep putting up with this crap.

"Oh I have to go to the ram dealership instead of an independent and pay $10,000 more? Sounds good to me!"

"Oh they track everywhere I drive, the speed I'm driving and also sell it to my insurance so they can increase rates, and advertisers to stalk me? If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear!".

weeeeum ,

I've advocate by doing. I work at a computer repair shop with honest rates, and transparent practices. I volunteer at repair cafés sharpening tools for free. This way you demonstrate directly towards them what you're doing and what companies are doing.

I can show customers that apple's ribbon cables are thinner than tissue paper, all of the freaking glue holding it together, the serialized components, the convoluted design, etc.

Whenever I speak about it outside of the repair shop people think I'm some conspiracy nut, but people will listen with the evidence right in front of them.

Family plan is insanely good value especially if you fill it with friends (20$ for 6). If I were paying $15 for myself, never.

Pretty good audio quality too, I have Sennheiser hd600 (300$) and have tuned the heck out of them. They sound amazing and I still cannot tell the difference between flac (uncompressed) and high bitrate mp3 (what Spotify uses).

What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

weeeeum ,

I think it would be nuclear warfare. Nuclear fission is a universal development for any advanced civilization. It would be easy to construct a nuclear bomb in an advanced civilization. Once a few rogue/pariah states start making them, everyone's screwed.

Making nukes is easy, the only reason we don't see more nuclear states on earth is because of the international backlash. With a couple more Iran and North Korea's we'll likely meet the filter ourselves.

Sharpening/polishing knives and tools. No music or videos, just the sharpening. Water stone and warm water too.

It's cathartic to do a good job sharpening and spending the time to get a good result. Especially when you get to the buttery smooth finishing stones. They're quiet but have, quiet, subtle sounds that are relaxing to listen to.

weeeeum ,

People who use it (for forum type chatting) are probably trying to avoid non enshittified platforms. Ironically they don't realize discord is heading towards the same path. Free screen sharing, high quality voice calls, image and video sharing and file sharing for FREE is not sustainable. Eventually they are going to crackdown on its users, which is unfortunate but predictable.

weeeeum ,

So much lost knowledge. Even on forums that remain, I feel as though 80% of all images no longer function. Especially frustrating when said image is constantly referred to.

Rats are big fluffy friend that never shower, reek, and likely harbor many diseases 🥰

First, avoid Amazon. All the stones on there are scams, if you contact the manufacturer you'll see that these stones are less than a dollar in bulk.

I sharpen tons of knives and tools, so I use around 5 or 6 stones, but if you are looking just to sharpen your knives, you only need 2, and a strop.

I'd say most people only need a 1000 grit stone, especially if they have a strop. I've been using a naniwa lobster for a while. Even though the aluminum oxide abrasive is not very aggressive, and slow on very hard steels, it leaves a very keen edge. After some stropping you will have a razor sharp edge if done correctly.

Of course there are many other options for good stones, shapton's korumaku series, shapton's glass series, naniwa chosera/professional series, king (in general).

Aside from water stones, diamonds are also popular. In my personal, unpopular, opinion, they cut so efficiently that the feedback is lacking and it's difficult to get a crisp edge off the stone. They also don't like abuse and can be ruined with aggressive use.

For the strop, you don't need anything fancy. You also don't need compound either, though I usually use natural stone powder.

Kind of gives me flashbacks to Amazon go stores. Despite them discussing all of their advanced technology to allow you to simply walk out with your groceries, around 70% had to be manually reviewed and corrected by an army of Indian technicians. I have a feeling this is going to be another case of ai meaning "A bunch of Indians"

Ill see what happens, presidents like to talk big before they're elected, but if everything really goes down the shitter, and project 2025 is successful I'll seriously consider leaving. Very fortunately I am British by decent. Not the greatest improvement but a significant one nonetheless.

weeeeum ,

Dude, I've got family there in the UK already, happy to take me in and I don't mind the change in scenery.

Chill...

weeeeum ,

Some of it comes from "binning" of chips. Despite our technology, processor manufacturing is kind of a gamble, the number of transistors a chip will have will be somewhat random, and the performance will vary. They will then sort and separate these processors by speed, "binning".

That's why you see CPU models that are nearly identical to each other but vary slightly in speed.

Plus, companies love money. They will make a product for every possible conceivable market. Say if somebody doesn't want to spend 200$, but can afford something greater than 150$, there will be a CPU for that gap.

Then different workloads require different types of CPUS. Single core applications need high clock speed, protein folding and needs many, slower cores and servers need processors that prioritize stability.

None. I think I'll honestly move off of the internet once ai becomes sufficiently advanced(as in web browsing). Every god damn company is so hell bent on making AI that can flood the internet with tons of mediocre, irrelevant, "content" that there's no point in visiting it anymore.

Tons of comments now are made by bots running chat gpt, hell there are even bots made just to bully people. The internet is dying, and corporations are eager to kill it.

weeeeum ,

I'm worried that corpos would use AI to exploit "human sections" of the internet. Already on reddit I have seen bots that try to answer questions, but "subtly" promote their product (sometimes to a comical degree).

Wherever there are people, there will soon be bots to deceive and exploit them

Extendo arm. It's goofy as hell but it's a god send when there's a bunch of random crap on the floor. They also have deceivingly good grip strength too.

Hand held vacuum. I don't think this is that niche anymore but it works really well for cleaning tables, random tight corners and I park it next to my clothes dryer to easily clean the filter. I also use it a TON for sucking up bugs. Buy a corded one since battery operated ones die fast (I went through 2 or 3 of these personally)

Bench scraper. Easily removes 90% of any grime on hard surfaces. Honestly more effective than a rag and detergent. When I bought mine I decided to try it out on my "thoroughly cleaned" kitchen counter and removed a disheartening amount of grime. Afterwards I use some detergent just to sterilize everything.

Yeah, I actually use a cheap kiwi nakiri and flattened the edge 😆

This is a weird one. Agree with them and basically be really pathetic. It really messes with people like this and narcissists.

The moment you fight back, or try to establish boundaries with people like this, they perceive you as challenging them. Since these people are ultimately insecure they will put you down really hard, to feel secure about themselves.

HealthygamerGG has a video on establishing boundaries and how it rarely works, and he discusses how you should approach it instead.

I believe it's inherent to the system. The whole point of a communist system is a centrally planned, and controlled, economy. This gives the state immense control and as inherent to every form of government, self preservation at any cost.

As discussed in "rules for rulers" by cgp grey, there is no such thing as a benevolent or kind dictator. All politicians and leaders will use any means available to themselves to further their own ambitions.

weeeeum ,

I know a lot of people push back against this but it's true in many regards. The vast majority of soviet innovation is directly from government activity and investment. When the Soviet union surpassed western governments in certain fields, it was always heavily funded by the government.

If you step back and look at the small things, consumer products and especially computers, they were extremely behind.

weeeeum ,

Aw dude Chinese takeout always makes me feel like shit. Not Chinese food, mind you, I grew up with a Chinese family and ate tons of the stuff, i cook it myself too.

The takeout on the other hand is just utterly drenched and sopping wet in oil. You can pick up a few noodles and grease will be dripping from them.

Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore...

weeeeum ,

In my personal opinion, the largest impact you have as an individual is your vote. Once elections are over there's no need to keep up with the news, there's nothing you can really do after all.

Something that really changed my perspective is that one of the oldest men to have ever lived, lived and grew up in Venezuela, a horrifically mismanaged country with tons of despair. Despite everything around him and living very modestly, he lived to an extremely old age.

You don't live that long without will to live but despite his circumstances he found personal happiness and fulfillment.

Moral of the story, despite the gloomy world out there doesn't mean yours deserves to be too.

I don't think it's a lie, just outdated and obsolete advice.

weeeeum ,

Relate a lot to your first point. Sometimes people assume they can just chip in a bit and check out, not realizing the time investment to tell them what to do, how to do it, etc. I've watched YouTubers who own business that have fans saying they'd work for free but are refused for this reason.

Often times It's more valuable just to pay someone you know will stick around.

Yes

Would have voted for Biden, this year I'll be voting for Biden.

weeeeum ,

My first choice would have been Bernie, but it would be close.

Rule 1 on reddit is never be proud of ANYTHING. People will viciously tear you to shreds.

If you are proud of something, lie and say it's your first project, setting unrealistic expectations for all other beginners in the hobby and you'll get tons of up votes for some reason.

weeeeum ,

I don't mean to shock you but... North Koreans can't travel anywhere.

Am I missing something ?

Floss picks. Flossing is actually more important than brushing and it's really nice to have a pack of floss picks at your desk so you can floss absent mindedly while watching a video or even in bed.
