Somewhat the opposite. My mom started "borrowing" money from me when I was a teenager. I was too trusting, but eventually i learned to say "no".
Fuck, I haven't thought about any of this in a long time. My mom was awful.
Edit:
I forgot to explain why borrow was in quotes. Most of the time I never got paid back. I still believe she intended on paying me back, but was never able to get ahead financially enough to do it. In general if she borrowed less than $100 she'd get it back to me and pretty quickly. Over $100 it would take her too long to save it up and she'd forget about it.
What about phrasing it so the effort isn't on you, but them?
"I've never really felt comfortable around [describe group]". This way, the failure isn't yours to get comfortable, but on them to mwake you comfortable.
Why couldn't this call be an email? Why would you call, when you know that you are near indistinguishable from spam calls about Microsoft services and Nigerian princes?
For me an email is when I don't need a quick response. A text is when I want a faster response but I don't want to interrupt what the other person is doing. A call is when I want a quick response and I think it's worth interrupting the person.
I have a whiteboard in my kitchen. Amongst other things, on it I keep a list of perishable foods that we have on hand. When I am trying to figure out what I am going to cook, I can look at the list and not have to think about every ingredient I own, And only focus on things that will go off soon. I usually don't include the common items we tend to go through often.
Sometimes I also include leftovers that need to be finished, and unusual ingredients I bought impulsively because I thought I wanted to try making something new but than lost focus/motivation to actually make something with them.
It's not a great system, but it helps me waste less.
This doesn't answer your question, but I just had a great idea for an art project which includes detailed applications of different protection levels of sunblock, and a tanning bed.
I guess stripes would be an easy place to start. Who wants to try it?
I remember borrowing CDs from friends and converting them to MP3s in the mid-late 90s. Admittedly I didn't really know what I was doing, so I couldn't really explain it to my friends, but ripping CDs with Windows CLI programs and amassing a huge (for the time) digital music collection was something I thought was super cool. Unlike wav files, I could actually (not always) fit a whole song on a floppy disc!
Searching for product recommendations has become harder and harder over the years. I used to google or browse reddit for reviews, used them to create a shortlist of products and then actually dig deeper and compare them....
Find a hobby that would use the product type in question. Find a community for said hobby then look for discussions comparing the options that are out there.
This tends to work better for certain things more than others. I doubt many hobby groups get excited about dishwashers or clothing dryers. I'm these cases, the Buy it For Life communities tend to have decent comparisons.
I was thinking about how I missed having an indoor thermometer that measures humidity. It's such a small specific thing, one I'd never think of getting unless pushed to it (which I was by one particularly dry winter). But I like having one now....
Also, doesn't the jetbrains license let you continue to use the version that was the latest as of when your license ended. It's a small difference, but also kinda huge.
Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...
My personal experience: Trying to find a restaurant that has vegan friendly options isn't always easy, and used to be much harder. That would make trying to find somewhere to eat as a group much more tedious if someone was vegan. I don't think anyone had issue with the person being a vegan, I think they just didn't like eating at the same two restaurants over and over.
Personally I think it's mostly nostalgia for me at this point. I liked them as a kid because we didn't get candy too often, and I could make these last a long time. I'd usually split each disc int 4 peices and just suck on each quarter until it was gone before eating the next one.
I would expect it to also be less expensive but they don't show us that information.
I personally wouldn't mind if my fuel mileage goes down if the cost is also proportionally lower.
Also, ethanol has a energy density of roughly 2/3 that of gasoline, so yes e85 would have 5% less energy than gasoline with no ethanol, not e10, which is what I see as the listed price in most places. When doing a price comparison, it should be against e0, not e10 if you are expecting a 5% energy difference.
