Obligatory "Better Help bad" comment.

Great video otherwise, though.

A New Deep Learning Algorithm Can Find Earth 2.0 ( www.universetoday.com )

...using data from the radial velocity (RV) detection method. This study holds the potential to help astronomers develop more efficient methods in detecting Earth-like exoplanets, which are traditionally difficult to identify within RV data due to intense stellar activity from the host star.

in the first year of observations as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), we found many hundreds of candidate galaxies from the first 650 million years after the big bang. In early 2023, we discovered a galaxy in our data that had strong evidence of being above a redshift of 14, which was very exciting, but there were some properties of the source that made us wary

In January 2024, NIRSpec observed this galaxy, JADES-GS-z14-0, for almost ten hours, and when the spectrum was first processed, there was unambiguous evidence that the galaxy was indeed at a redshift of 14.32, shattering the previous most-distant galaxy record

JWST is awesome.

Nice! What percentage of renewables is the grid at now?

threelonmusketeers ,

Are you referring to sectors of energy consumption which have not yet electrified? What are the biggest consumers there?

The countries with the most Fediverse servers are rich and former/current colonial powers. One of the best true barometers of the success of the Fediverse is how quickly we can turn that on its head. ( sopuli.xyz )

In the end I don’t think internet users in rich powerful countries are the users most likely to benefit and invest their time into in the fediverse. They might be the ones with the most free time, money and privilege around computers which makes being on the leading edge of niche technologies far easier, but I don’t think...

It would be cool to have some Lemmy servers from some more obscure countries, like, I don't know, Mali, or something. Do they have any interesting top level domain names?

nearest

How near?

just 40 light-years away

I guess we won't be visiting anytime soon, but that's still relatively close in astronomical contexts.

"Could"

Until a working prototype is built, I will be treating the field of warp drives (even sublight warp) with a healthy dose of skepticism. Glad people are working on it though.

threelonmusketeers ,

If you have a good heat exchanger, don't you get most of that energy back when expanding the gas?

threelonmusketeers ,

Huh, I never thought about this. The plurality norms don't quite match snail mail.

  • "The mail is here" (this sounds normal)
  • "The mails are here" (this sounds unusual)
  • "I got an email" (this sounds normal)
  • "I got a letter" (this sounds normal)
  • "I got a mail" (this sounds unusual)

I guess this comes down to the fact that there is no widely-used word for a single piece of electronic mail. Perhaps "eletter" would be the analogue, but I've never seen it used. As a result, "email" is used for both a single piece, and the category as a whole.

Definitely a good sublemmy, along with !goodnewseveryone, !goodnews, and !optimistsunite.

I think OP is looking for instances though, not just sublemmies.

threelonmusketeers ,

So would that put a full brain scan somewhere in the zettabyte range?

threelonmusketeers ,

A couple months ago, I didn't buy a cheap Blu-ray drive and did not download MakeMKV. Since I did not do this, I can't report on how great it is.

Piracy is pretty much the only way the original Star Wars movies are still available.

"I am altering the movie. Pray I don't alter it any further." - George Lucas, probably.

I also have some concerns over the recommmendation to block, which I voiced in the original thread. If I block a problematic user, I can no longer help by reporting their posts in the future.

threelonmusketeers ,

I then block the user

Is this not a slightly selfish action? It solves the problem for you, but doesn't make the community better for everyone. I feel like blocking users should be reserved for issues like harassment, not spam.

threelonmusketeers ,

If I blocked them, then I wouldn’t be able to help shape the community in a positive manner.

Yeah, I feel like this is an important aspect that many users miss.

threelonmusketeers ,

But what about future posts from the same account? If I've blocked the account, I can't report posts I don't see.

threelonmusketeers ,

Very well put.

threelonmusketeers ,

I don't have the patience for that shit

You are fortunate to be in a position where you have a diversity of employment options. Remember this.

UBI could be even less complicated. If everyone were guaranteed a livable income, a minimum wage might not even be necessary.

threelonmusketeers ,

Nice! The NYT took me 3:16, although I think this was my first one.

threelonmusketeers OP ,

Yeah, it sounds like they had to tweak some software to better utilize the remaining threads:

In response to this change, we modified the recording algorithm to be more sensitive to neural population signals, improved the techniques to translate these signals into cursor movements, and enhanced the user interface.

I wonder how many threads retracted?

I admit that in the past I've been a nasty. They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch.

Thanks for cleaning it up! Much nicer reading experience now.

Yeah, I heard about it on a podcast a few weeks ago, but didn't see a video until recently.
