I wasn't aware just how good the news is on the green energy front until reading this. We still have a tough road in the short/medium term, but we are more or less irreversibly headed in the right direction.
Although Lemmy's userbase is quite large,it still is small enough that I do often see the same people in comment sections. It feels though, that I should recognise more names, because I can only remember around 5 individual ones.
On a side note I thought it ended ok. Not great not terrible I'd probably give it 3.6.
The calypso ending was massively tacked on. Instead of putting the tech in the black hole they should have had to have Discovery itself have to hide with it. Then emotional goodbyes under pressure rather than dragged out.

This is really horrific. But as this was second hand I'm not sure how having "independent third-party certification" in place would help, unless you could either get something you bought certified afterwards, or it was illegal to sell secondhand without said certification documents (but then you still run the risk of forgeries or after purchase alterations).
It points towards a bigger problem to me, that of dodgy imports in the first place. We need
Online market places to be jointly and severally liable for anything on their sites. No more shirking responsibility by saying it's on their sellers.
Proper import checks (thanks Brexit) to catch stuff that's not up to the existing safety standards.
More money put into enforcing existing safety standards in general
To work closely with the Chinese government to tackle dangerous products before they're out on the open market.
How they do it doesn't really matter how they do it, just that there's laws in place to make them do it. It's also more than that, if there's people with fake goods on their platforms and they're not doing enough to tackle it they should be fined into oblivion.

From 1 February, it became a criminal offence to own the XL bully breed in England and Wales without an exemption certificate. Anyone who owns one of the dogs must have had the animal neutered, have it microchipped and keep it muzzled and on a lead in public, among other restrictions.
So I'm guessing she got them before they were banned and had an exception so she didn't have to have them destroyed.
Yep, I'm about 13 stone 1. Which I know is about 83kg. But I have no idea how many pounds in a stone. I do know that there's about 2 and a quarter lb to a kg. Therefore I must be about 186lb.

I've not watched either, but this is probably the relevant extract from the wall of text that the UK gov put up.
If consumers are led to believe that a game will remain playable indefinitely for certain systems, despite the end of physical support, the CPRs may require that the game remains technically feasible (for example, available offline) to play under those circumstances.
Anyone remember the story about light bulbs? How they'd last almost forever, but it was secretly decided that this is bad, as customers would never need to buy a new one, so they intentionally made them worse.
WTF are you smoking? I think I've replaced 1 led bulb since switching to them 10 years ago.
We need to make sure whenever the General Election is we keep up this momentum. I want them to have a wipe out that makes Canada 1993 look like a good result for conservatives. Leave the fuckers with 2 MP's.
When the time comes remember to vote tactically. In our system you often don't get the luxury of voting for who you want, you vote against who you don't want.
That might be true for head of state, but not so clear for legislature houses. From a look at the maps on this wiki page I'd say a majority of countries have some kind of at least limited PR.
No, socialism is a set of ideals, beliefs and values as well as a system (you can't have a system without the idea behind it afterall). It's perfectly reasonable to convert someone into believing in a set of ideals, beliefs and values.
True. But hardly relevant. To convert someone to something is a perfectly fine grammatical usage. Another example would be when people say they converted to Christianity.
I think post WW2 there was a drive towards the idea that we'd never need to go without. This combined with lifestyle changes (more people working longer hours) gave birth to the rise of fast convince foods and the mass growth of places like McDonalds and Burger King.
Why don't people just stop? Ideas within society have a lot of momentum, they take a lot of energy to get started and a lot to turn or stop again.
But name/pronouns change all the time otherwise so it's more normal to use the current ones. If Ms. Jones gets married and is now Mrs. Smith, it wouldn't be inaccurate to talk about Mrs. Smith's car breaking down last summer.
That's such a good and clear comparison.
With a married person who has changed their last name you can use "née" if using a trans persons birth name was for some reason needed (I can't think of a reason why it would but be though) would something equivalent to "Mrs Smith (née Jones) be appropriate, or largely offensive?

It probably works fine in countries where the government issues everyone with ID cards. But in countries where you don't have to have ID cards (UK, USA etc) it just acts as a form of voter suppression.
If Blunkett had got his way we'd all have ID cards. Though if that had happened the Tories wouldn't have introduced ID cards for elections as it wouldn't have given them advantage.
To be fair when they say recently they mean about 20 years ago. It was the Blair government that were looking to do this when I was at school in the early 2000s.
He was asking why there was a difference between the US and the UK.
The comment you were replying to was saying there isn't a difference between the US and UK. It's a divisive issue in both with some people pushing for it and some thinking it's a bad thing.
We're putting in tones of wind power. The problem is the weird linking of electricity prices to gas prices and the fact we don't have anywhere near the energy storage capacity we need. So we end up paying wind farm operators to shut down turbines and generate less when its extra windy.
