Over 200 Canadian charities found funding the Israeli occupation ( the-peak.ca )

On June 3, a public letter by Just Peace Advocates and the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (CFPI) revealed over 200 Canadian charities have been funding Israel with a collective $237.5 million since 2022. This goes against the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)’s charity rules which note that donating money to the military or armed...

The petition is open from April 10th to August 8th. So far, it's received over 11,000 signatures. I just signed it. You need to provide an email address (in addition to name, postal code, etc.), which they send a link to, and by clicking that link your signature is added (this is a 1 signature per person safeguard). I looked at the collection/disclosure of personal info briefly. It looks like no info other than #s signed per province/territory will be disclosed and all personal info will be destroyed 6 months after the e-petition closes.

Called out in parliament, maybe, but not by anyone inclined to vote for him. I've never met a Conservative voter who thinks critically when it comes to voting (and I've met several with advanced degrees). Policy and performance don't matter; they vote for 'their team' and based on beliefs - not evidence - that 'conservatives are good with money' and similar swill. It's more like being a sports fan or a religious devotee than a rational elector, ime

I hope you're right! I have very little confidence in mainstream news media these day to do anything besides serve the interests of corporations and the wealthy. Recent examples: (coverage of) Colonialist genocide in Palestine, carbon 'tax', recent capital gains tax. This issue is compounded by how few Canadians read non-mainstream news. I know you do, but I think we're clearly outliers since we're on Lemmy

Canadians who have lost their sense of smell say it's misunderstood, undervalued — and deserves more attention ( www.cbc.ca )

For millennia, the sense of smell has been widely undervalued — ranked far below vision by the likes of Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud. In 2021, a survey in the journal Brain Sciences found that people consistently ranked smell below vision and hearing — and even below commercial products. One quarter of college students...

That flies in the face of what’s been pledged by Canadian Blood Services and Grifols, the Spanish multinational corporation that is trying to open private plasma collection centres across Ontario and already...

The incumbent (Tory) party in the UK has included national service in their campaign leading up to next month's federal [edit: national] election.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c988jdxl02vo

The proposed new scheme would not be conscription, where people are legally required to join the armed forces for a period. But it would compel people by law to complete a community programme over a 12-month period, or enrol in a year-long military training scheme, when they turn 18.

Apologies, corrected to national. More importantly, how do you feel about the incumbent party in your country planning to introduce soft conscription?

An oligopoly is driving up grocery prices. What can we do? ( www.nationalobserver.com )

I don't think most people who are against the idea of a carbon rebate/tax will be swayed by new figures. I hope policy-makers learn from this debacle of misnaming a green initiative that puts money in the pockets of most Canadians a "tax". It effortlessly becomes a Conservative soundbite. And the corporate-controlled mainstream media get people into a froth in no time

This report isn't about grocer finances. It's about the analysis of food prices, and basically it says that a lot of the info that people are fed through the media and that is used to inform policy-making is not evidence-backed and doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Their point is that if we want to ensure food is affordable, etc., we need real data and not the bogus reports that are currently out there. The first step in getting real data are calling out current reports as bogus.

These reports are not scientific publications, but rather qualify as “grey literature” — information produced outside traditional academic publishing channels.

Nevertheless, they are published under the logos of academic institutions and government agencies. Given their prominence in Canadian media and policy, we believe it is important for the public to know that the arguments presented in these reports do not live up to scientific standards.

It's unclear what timeframe the OLP estimate is for, but there's the startup cost on record of $225 million and an estimated $150 to $200 million [let's call it $175] of revenue loss per year from "Official figures from the Ministry of Finance and the LCBO". After 5 years that's an estimated $1.1 billion

From what I've read, carbon capture is, at best, an effective part of a transition away from reliance on fossil fuels as we systemically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, at worst, a bogus intervention, designed to distract populations from the larger necessary task of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and perpetuate the idea that we're not facing crisis and can stay the course of doing little.

Tl;Dr: when fossil fuel companies talk about carbon capture, they're lying and distracting from the real issues in order to keep doing what they're doing

Tbh, policing of criticism of the Israeli government and their ongoing colonialist genocide of the Palestinian people has been so profoundly pervasive and oppressive in Canada (and US, Germany, and other countries), at least the half year or so, that I consider Chow's comments and non-participation pretty courageous and commendable actually. Like you, I certainly would have liked a more principled stance that explicitly denounces genocide, but given the almost absurd level of censorship and whitewashing that's been going on, I think she's perhaps saying and doing as much as she can. It's clear to me that this is much larger than her. I'm glad she's mildly voicing dissent about the flag-raising at Toronto City Hall. It's a @#$%ing travesty

I like the title picture. If she authored a book and there was a picture of the author on the back, that one would work well. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's her in the same cat hammock in the reddit cats photo that you posted in a comment

When I think of Tim Hortons, I think of how I've seen the disappearance of reusable flatware and cutlery from such a large proportion of eating establishments, and the normalization of eating-in with exclusively single-use disposable stuff (usually plastic), in about two decades. Future generations will thank us /s. But it's those effing 'woke lids' that are the real problem /s. Also, who cares about Tim Hortons if you don't like it; it's not even Canadian. Do conservative voters just need a daily dose of misplaced resentment and rage to keep them going?

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

Paper straws do suck though.

I'm in Toronto, and I believe the city has banned plastic straws. I think plastic straw bans tend to be harmfully distracting from the larger issues. (To be clear, I think we have a massive plastic pollution problem.)

I was in a Hawaiian cocktail bar in Toronto recently, where the drinks are made to be drunk with straws and half of the people at the table asked for a second straw halfway through their drinks as the paper straws had stopped working well

We should be selling and marketing bring-your-own reusable plastic straws, with a small washable traveling case and a cleaning brush, maybe 4-packs

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

I think that is a really American thing though. I have never been to a place that had plastic cutlery and single use flatware.

Interesting! Care to provide your province and urban/rural? I live in downtown Toronto and unless there's waiter-to-table service, there's nothing reusable except glassware in bars and potentially plastic cups for free water. Other Torontonians, please chime in if you've seen anything different. Most places don't ask "to stay or to go?" any more, or if they do the only difference is a bag

An "an anonymous source says" article (i.e., deliberate leak to the press; standard sports industry practice). Toronto, the WNBA's 14th franchise, is expected to start play May 2026 and play at Coca-Cola Coliseum, an 8,000-seat arena at Toronto's CNE grounds which is home to the Marlies and where Toronto's Professional Women's Hockey League franchise is currently playing its first playoff series. An official announcement is expected May 23rd
