Is the leaves thing common for people who get glasses for the first time? That was the most intense sight for me at 25 years old, was seeing the individual leaves on a tree like 50 feet away

What is in lab grown meat that you reckon is harmful?

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

What's the actual difference between a cancer cell and a normal cell, aside from the fact that cancer cells don't kill themselves? Is cancer from a cow transmissible to humans?

People knew the effects of tobacco for centuries, actually. But also, it became widely known as soon as it started being widely investigated. I have the same argument about vapes all the time. Within like 2 years cigarettes went from being something prescribed by doctors to something that everyone knows gives you cancer. When something is as heavily scrutinized as vapes or lab-grown meat, you can be damned sure the effects will be widely understood within a couple of decades

starman2112 , (edited )
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Wrong. Doctors lied about it for years when it first came out and long after

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Counterblaste_to_Tobacco

Some doctors may have been wrong, but that doesn't mean nobody knew cigarettes were dangerous. I'll save my time and assume that if you're this unabashedly wrong about this, you're probably as unabashedly wrong about everything else too

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'm ignoring it because you don't really have anything to say besides "we don't know what the health effects of lab grown meat will be" when it's quite literally exactly the same as normal meat. It's like complaints about GMOs. The process of producing it may be different, but the physical material that you consume is literally identical on a chemical level. It's nothing like cigarettes.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Do you really not get the difference between "the chemicals are the same chemicals" and "nuh uh?"

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not always an option. Sometimes reaching for your phone to turn it off will get you killed. Just don't use biometrics.

I'd love to not live in a country with him, but if I leave, I know the country gets a little bit worse for those who can't leave. This is why I advocate for staying in awful states if you can do so safely. If you leave, then the state gets even worse for the people who want to but can't.

Do you have any idea what genetically modified organisms actually are? We're not talking about some chemical we've never heard of, we're talking about rice (but with more vitamin a). This isn't something that needs to be proven safe.

I love the downvotes from people who don't understand what GMOs even are

Imagine spending 40 billion dollars on one of the most recognizable brands in history, so deeply embedded in the public consciousness that any other company would throw virgins into a volcano for a chance at that level of recognition, just to replace all of that branding with your own little name that everyone has been telling you sounds stupid for the last 25 years

starman2112 ,

I never thought about it like that. If he makes an average of just $0.50 per sale after all the storefront fees and taxes and stuff, he would still have enough money to pay himself $200,000 a year for an entire lifetime, just from the sales he's already made. No wonder he's so chill about keeping the game updated for free. What an awesome guy

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, I chose $0.50 as an absurdly low assumption, because while the game nominally sells for $15, I don't know anything about costs involved. A quick google search says his net worth is somewhere around 30-45 million dollars, which is about twice what I estimated. Which most people would use as an excuse to sell the game to Microsoft and retire forever, but Eric Barone is too good for that. I just realized I only own the game on mobile and xbox. Reckon I might buy it on PC next paycheck

Imo there should be options for standard deletion and total deletion. Standard is faster, puts less wear on the drive, and keeps the files potentially recoverable, whole total would make it totally unrecoverable at the expense of taking slightly longer and putting a bit more wear on the drive

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

That still doesn't fully erase the data though. It just tells the computer that that space on the drive is available to be overwritten, but the 1s and 0s are still recoverable

starman2112 , (edited )
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah let's encourage citizens to report their neighbors for every legal offense, this kind of thing has always gone well throughout history

Say, I'm pretty sure I saw you invite a couple folks into your home the other day, and I never saw them come out. Oh would you look at that, the SS is here!

Similarities to fascism aside, this is still an awful idea. Have you ever dealt with automated rule enforcement? It's an awful way to enforce rules. But even if every single report had a human follow up on it, there's also massive, unprecedented privacy issues. You may be totally fine with my insurance company knowing where I am 24/7, but I sure as hell am not. I'm super not okay with a government (which we have) gaining free access to that information for anything they want (which they would). Oh hey, we're back to fascism

The point is that even if not every man is dangerous, women have to treat every man as if he is, because any man could be. Find me a woman who leaves her drinks unattended at bars and I'll show you a woman who knows what it feels like to get roofied. For women, prejudice against unknown men is not problematic, it's pragmatic.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Unironically yes. The problem is that "might" right there. It isn't an insult against you personally when women say they don't trust random men. It's not about the bear.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

You sound like the kind of guy that women have to be real careful with saying no to

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don't think it's misandry. At the least, it's not problematic. I don't blame women for not trusting guys they don't know. I don't even trust guys I don't know, and I'm pretty sure most of them don't want to fuck me

starman2112 , (edited )
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

You may need glasses if you need to squint at your phone to know what 🐻 is

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah because it turns out people can smell manipulative gotcha questions from a million miles away

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Like, so incredibly no

Women don't treat every man they meet as a predator, they treat every man as possibly a predator, which we are. You aren't the target of sexism if a woman in the same bar as you keeps a lid on her drink.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

it has a subtext of “it doesn’t matter how good of a man you are, you will never be good enough for me, because I’m going to chose the bear every single time.”

No. I know plenty of women who would choose me over the bear. It isn't a choice between a man of their choice and a bear, it's between a man they don't know and a bear. That a woman who doesn't know me would pick the bear doesn't bother me.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think it's pretty heavily implied that they aren't asking about, like, the girl's boyfriend or dad or something. And no, saying you think fucking bears are less dangerous than men isn't an attack. If you feel hurt by it, that's entirely on you.

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

No, it's on the men constantly sexually harassing women, forcing them to be extra cautious with strangers. It's not shitty for women to not trust guys they don't know, when nearly every woman has stories about that time a guy tried to rape her

>inb4 "I don't sexually harass anyone"

Good for you here's a round of applause 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Now go tell every other man that he needs to also not sexually harass women, and don't play along when they try to justify their actions as not really harassment or assault

starman2112 ,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

If you assume there is a high chance that any man you meet is a rapist, then you'll avoid men and eventually have so little interaction with men that you begin to believe they all de facto equate to this mental image of a monster.

No. Do you know any women? This is pure, unadulterated conjecture. How is it that like 4/5 women choose the bear, but also like 4/5 women have boyfriends? Your idea of how women think is simply incorrect.

The chance of any given man being a rapist doesn't have to be that high to justify taking precautions. I'm going to assume you're an American, and because I assume you're American, I'm going to assume you drive a car. You wear a seatbelt every time you drive your car, even though you only have like a 4% chance of getting in an accident every year. It doesn't mean you assume all cars are gonna crash, and it doesn't make you afraid of cars. Of course this doesn't fit in well with the bear question, but I hope it clarifies why women treating every man as if they might be a predator doesn't mean they necessarily become terrified of men.

Both? Never had any good chances to ask anyone out, but also never had the drive to find one

As much as anyone with undiagnosed mental conditions who's making $7.25 an hour possibly can

Don't have to spend money on dates, don't have to open up to anyone, but also don't have any dates to spend money on, and don't have anyone to open up to

At some point probably, but point #3 makes it hard
