If I can't read or even search it without creating an account then it's pretty useless as an information source. Same issue with Twitter and Instagram.

smeg ,

Man, these "realistic shooters" sure have changed in the decade since I last played one!

smeg ,

Americans sadly got there first and defined all the computer terms, that's why it's a TV programme but a computer program. I can deal with that though, helps distinguish computer things from real things!

It's concerning to see how much power Google really holds over small websites

"I understand that Google doesn't owe us or anyone else traffic," says Navarro, of HouseFresh. "But Google controls the roads. If tomorrow they decide the roads won't go to an entire town, that town dies. It's too much power to just shrug and say, 'Oh well, it's just the free market,'" she says.

As we've seen so many times, they got their foot in the door by actually being the best, but now only really keep that position by paying to be the default on most devices. Given how Microsoft were forced to offer browser choices on Windows, is there hope that Google are forced to offer choices on Android and Chrome?

smeg ,

Just because there is a choice doesn't mean that the casual user is aware of it. You could always chose to install Firefox on Windows, but Microsoft still got done for pushing IE as the default.

smeg ,

It's not that exciting, but that's a good thing - it works very well and is very similar to a stock experience!

smeg ,

They were both originally mods that they adopted rather than original creations though, right?

smeg ,

Ooh, it's Forever-free Friday over at !freegames, so yoink, I'm adding to the cross-post chain!

smeg ,

Huh, that's actually more expensive than I'd have thought for a single bulb, even taking into account that you'd probably only be running it for a quarter of the time

smeg ,

Did they?

At launch, the Proteus Controller will work with the Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 and 11. ByoWave says it won’t support PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, though it’s open to partnering with these platforms.

smeg ,

and that's why they invented Docker 👈😬👈

smeg ,

Steal lore from Shadowrun, they've already fleshed out the details for you!

smeg ,

Same, I'm wondering what this brings that you can't already do

smeg ,

Fortunately the company execs aren't the ones doing the hiring, and if they are then you probably don't want that job!

smeg ,

It's been a few years since I tried it out but I think following these instructions on an Ubuntu machine worked without any problems. From there you just copy the binary to your Deck and add it as a non-Steam game as normal (making sure to use the Linux runtime rather than Proton).

smeg ,

You're welcome :)

smeg ,

I think this is something a lot of people posting here don't get. You can be a programmer, make apps or games in your spare time, set your own goals and be your own boss, and that's great. Suddenly you get a "normal" job programming and you have you deal with customer requirements, business nonsense, and working as part of a team; that's being a software engineer. One isn't superior to the other, they are just different beasts.

smeg ,

Ah, the XCOM approach. Now you look after those variables and get sad when you have to delete them.

smeg ,

Android sandboxes apps anyway, what GrapheneOS does is allow you to install Google Play Services in a sandbox so you can use it without granting it the admin-level permissions it usually demands.

smeg ,

I have often though about what ridiculously high rolls in 5e would look like. I think rolling a 30 in Performance would be Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.

smeg ,

I completed Afterbirth and put it down for a few years, I've recently got Repentance and not only did I pick it up again pretty quickly but there is so much new stuff. I can't recommend it enough!

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

smeg ,

How do you store who has voted and what the results of the poll are without storing results on a server? Ultimately it's just the same sort of data as who upvoted and downvoted what, right?

smeg ,

Some clients let you do that

smeg ,

Would that work to obfuscate up/downvotes in general?

smeg ,

I'm using Summit, it can toggle off links, texts, pictures, and video posts

smeg ,

Well that's the case with most new innovations. The optimistic view is that this is just the prototype and the price comes down as it develops.

smeg ,

Speak for yourself, my phone is the most secure device I own!

smeg ,

EEA and EU are related but not the same

smeg ,

I don't think it's about the cost of the 3.5mm jack itself, it's about the space it takes up. "Thinner and lighter" as a goal means removing chunky things they don't think are necessary. Also waterproofing maybe?

smeg ,

I've got no idea of the legitimacy of the claim, it's just what the manufacturers claim. Likewise, they assume people want "thinner and lighter", presumably because that's what Steve Jobs said. It's all just trying to make the devices appeal to the mass market.

smeg ,

The only way is by being big enough to be worth their time

smeg ,

Depends if the shareholders are all hedge funds wanting to pump-and-dump or if they're actual investors interested in making the company better!

smeg ,

It's fine to not want the dark tone, classic d&d heroic fantasy is much more of a feel-good vibe and there's nothing wrong with liking that. There are a lot of Forged in the Dark games (i.e. Blades hacks) with different themes, I imagine a load are much less dark!

smeg ,

Yeah I would think removing stress and trauma would fundamentally change the game into something else, but you could still reskin them to change the tone. For example stress could be your mana, and traumas could be your soul ascending, or something like that in a heroic fantasy setting; the mechanics are still the same but it doesn't have the same dark vibe.

Runners in the Shadows, I've not played it but I've seen comments describing it as 'Shadowrun without the crunch'

smeg ,

Runners in the Shadows, I've not played it but I've seen comments describing it as 'Shadowrun without the crunch'

smeg ,

If you do play it then I'd love to hear what it's like!

smeg ,

So it's ads on the lock screen? Didn't Amazon try that a decade ago with the subsidised Kindle Fire tablets?

smeg ,

That's what every game company has said about every game for decades though! A game disc which installs and plays the game was legally still some nebulous "this provides a licence to play the game which can be revoked at any time", it's only now that the companies actually have the power to revoke them at any time.

smeg ,

Sunset routine every evening, steps through over 150 separate RGB values over 45 minutes.

Did you use the built-in Flux integration for that? I broke mine recently and it's a real pain having to do it manually!

smeg ,

What did you use for outside brightness? Your own sensor or public weather data?

smeg ,

Ooh nice, I'll give that a go, cheers!

smeg ,

The standout camera is the 3x 72mm periscope, which is equipped with a 64MP sensors (0.7µm pixels) and a bright f/2.4 aperture.

You can't just throw the word periscope in there with no explanation unless this phone also comes with sonar and torpedoes

smeg ,

Wow, never heard of that before. Actually a really interesting article, cheers!
