Maybe it's for the best. Furisoa was alright, but it did have the distinct feeling of an attempt to start a cinematic universe. It was the first Mad Max movie to be so directly tied with the continuity and canon of the preceding movie. That is a very different feeling than the loosely connected, sort of folk tale feeling the other movies had in relation to each other.

This new Wasteland movie sounds, just by the short description, like it would have been like Furisoa with a tight connection to the other movies. I don't think Mad Max needs to become that.

The commander must have liked HST at least a little bit to have gone through the trouble of an administrative discharge, but not even downgrade from "honorable" to "general".

Usually if somebody is a minor pain, everybody just waits it out until their contract ends and denies them the ability to sign a new one. If they are pain enough to discharge early through a pure admin discharge (as opposed to medical), there is usually enough hard feeling for a downgrade.

Drug use on its own usually doesn't result in a court martial, which means it normally isn't a DD.

Drug use would be a less severe separation like an OTH or general discharge.

It's my experience in technical professions that many people consider their improvised solutions to be clever and thoughtful, and other peoples' to be shoddy and dangerous.

And it doesn't have a watermark, or most of the other stuff described. Bateman and everyone else at that table are a bunch of idiots who have no clue what they are talking about.

It's fun. It's a puzzle game disguised as a strategy game, so you need to slightly adjust your thinking if you go in and have trouble.

Popsci article.

TLDR solar panels have a lot of inefficiencies, which makes them more of a detriment to mounting on standard commuter cars when you take into account the effects of the added weight.

Furiosa was fine. In a vacuum, it was actually pretty good, but in being a sequel to Fury Road it can't shake comparisons.

I figure that it looking so visually similar to Fury Road in trailers made a lot of people ask themselves why even bother watching it when they'd already seen Fury Road. The title including "A Mad Max Saga" is clunky and throws up big vibes of this being a tack on story (which it is), which really doesn't create the kind of hype wave needed to reach out to people who are already cynical about going to a theater.

The word of mouth all seems to start with "Well it wasn't as good as Fury Road, but..." which isn't going to put a fire under the seats of undecided people.

Prequel

You got me. It's still a follow up movie that looks very similar but lesser in the trailers, and has a clunky title.

Also Fury Road happens over 48 hours. Furiosa spans like 15 years.

What does that have to do with people not watching it? I'm talking about marketing and word of mouth impressions. Plot details aren't very important to that.

This is a bad situation for her. I am genuinely curious under what standing she is suing. Thinking it through, this seems like a situation where the laws might not have caught up to what is happening. I hope she gets some changes out of this, but I am really curious on the legal mechanics of how that might happen.

@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

I presume at that point the store would just have security walk out the person wearing the hat.

setsneedtofeed ,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

A tangent to explore. I though am curious how the current case under the current laws is expecting to go forward.

If the AI is flagging faces and immediately alerting employees, it is likely also going to throw up a flag for abnormal interference like that. Or if it doesn't do it now, it is a feature that could be added if such hats become a common enough.

setsneedtofeed ,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

I am waiting to follow the case for updates, because while I hope that the outcome pushes back on AI system like this, I am skeptical of current laws to perceive what is happening as protected class discrimination. I presume in the UK the burden for proving fault in the AI lays on the plaintiff, which is at the heart of if the reason is legitimate in the eyes of the law.

setsneedtofeed ,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

And this is why I'm asking, because I know little about UK law, and am trying to figure out how this is going to move forward. She can sue, now I wonder about the theory that leads to a win. Protected categories is a start, but it feels vague, and I'm curious what the precise angle and evidence brought in will be.

TLDR the article ranks:

  1. Road Warrior

  2. Fury Road

  3. Furiosa

  4. Mad Max

  5. Beyond Thunderdome

I personally don't like slotting enjoyment of movies into hard ranked categories. Movies can have aspects that are kind of prismatic, where depending on my mood at the time of thinking about them I might like or dislike what they've done. Beyond Thunderdome is a movie with a lot of these elements. It is in many ways a great and perfect third movie in the original series, being the furthest along in the timeline and showing humanity and civilization have gone the most awry from present day. It does a lot to retroactively shape perceptions of the Mad Max franchise that people tend to ignore.

And that's just a preamble to an actually discussion about one of the movies.
