Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore...

Agree with the first one. As someone with anxiety, I am fully informed of what's happening in the world, but that doesn't mean I need a constant stream of doom into my eyeballs.

When Russia invaded Ukraine I went into a full panic spiral, anxiety attacks and depression. I went out, I got help, and now I know when things happen but don't just look up the news, I keep informed but also acknowledge I'm not going to change anything. So I live my life.

Let's gloat a little, What makes Lemmy/Mastodon/KBin/BlueSky and the Fediverse better than Facebook/Reddit/Twitter?

With Lemmy - I can block whomever is bothering me and I will not see their posts ever again. I can see their notifications and they somehow can keep responding to me (which ought to be worked on). But erasing their existence on my end should be a thing when you don't want to deal with them....

No pushed agenda because of that either. No profit motive, no paid promotions, potential for a propaganda engine later, but right now the only thing being pushed is a free open discourse.

Most of the time it's not even nefarious, I can tell you've worked big corpos. There just are too many intertwined things and no one overseeing the whole system. Every large company probably has hundreds of security flaws, but no one can see the giant entrance sign to the forest when all they can see are trees

American Motorcyclist Association Urges DOT to Act on Automated Driver System Regulations Following Tragic Collision ( americanmotorcyclist.com )

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 26, 2024) — In the wake of the most recent tragedy involving a fatal collision between a Tesla vehicle in autopilot mode and a motorcyclist in Washington state, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) once again urges the Department of Transportation (DOT) to strengthen Automated Driving System...

Yeah, to any engineer it's no secret why the system has been in "beta" for almost a decade. It's because there is no way they can probe it works 100% of the time

Jesus when are stockholders going to realize what he's like at the helm and kick him out of CEO? This is the first thing I've heard about Musk doing anything with Tesla since Twitter happened. How do stockholders trust this man. Throwing away everything about him, this is an absent CEO who learned about one project that everyone was watching, he comes in, kicks down the door, and first response is to fire the whole team. To me, that says "this company is a shitshow"

Guaranteed this was some MBA who realized they could save money by going offshore. Every MBA goes through this phase. I'll save the company millions! Quality drops to zero, bugs go out MBA is promoted out, and the actual pms are left to figure out how the hell to fix this

I feel proud of myself to recognize that this iconic dude is not at a 'computer', rather, a [dumb] terminal! ]Or...?] ( knowyourmeme.com )

Terminals are NOT computers. At least dumb terminals are not. Smart terminals do have logic circuit, but dumb terminals work mostly like televisions, except they have protocols (like when you send a SIGINT signal with CTRL+C, and you are a 80s academic working on his terminal at UC Berkeley, then your UNIX implementation ---...

The fun thing with AI that companies are starting to realize is that there's no way to "program" AI, and I just love that. The only way to guide it is by retraining models (and LLMs will just always have stuff you don't like in them), or using more AI to say "Was that response okay?" which is imperfect.

And I am just loving the fallout.

Yup at this point I call that a free checked bag. Oh no... Out of space? Guess I'll just have to be the hero and ditch my bag...

Sidenote people who do things like throw their coats up there when they've announced there is limited space are dicks.

No no no on the internet you don't understand. You can't just leave quietly. You have to make sure everyone knows you're leaving.

Standard Google. Make 2 competing products. See which one is successful. Force all of the other users to successful one even if there are less features. 5 years later kill off that one for another meaningless changeover.

They stopped innovating in the late 2000s. It's all been pointless marketing rebrands since.

To me this seems obvious, the models are trained off of GitHub as a whole. Most code on GitHub either is unsecure, or it was written without needing to be secure.

I'm already getting pull requests from juniors trying to sneak in AI generated code without actually reading it.

Build an entire ecosystem, with multiple frontends, apps, databases, admin portals. It needs to work with my industry. Make it run cheap on the cloud. Also make sure it's pretty.

The prompts are getting so large we may need to make some sort of... Structured language to pipe into.. a device that would.. compile it all...

literally all it would take for me to consider Samsung over the Pixel again would be:

  • No Samsung bloatware

What are they paying those high priced marketing consultants? I'm pretty sure I'm cheaper.

scrubbles ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Been saying it everywhere here. They're cortana-ing copilot. They have an interesting thing. But They gave it to their marketing team and they're just going to run the thing into the fucking ground. It's going to be on the home page of Xbox, it's going to take up 40% of the task bar, it's going to be there taking up 20% of the screen every time you open office.

Ffs they have good ideas then they ruin them with just constant bombardment. They did it with cortana. Cool idea, ruined by their own forcing it in our faces. Hell I'll even go so far to saying it's clippy again.

I saw this earlier and I'm glad it was removed almost immediately.

Working retail/service in the US is a joke because people have become so entitled that they don't even think of service workers as humans anymore. When I used to work retail at a certain big blue box electronics store I was screamed at, yelled at, belittled, called names, and in a couple very extreme cases had items thrown at me and one person took a swing at me.

This is just another example of that. People here in the US are so detached from reality and laser focused on their routine that they literally cannot comprehend that workers may want to spend a holiday with their family too. Or worse than that, they think workers don't deserve to be at home with their families on a holiday, because they deserve service more than you deserve to see your family. God forbid they microwave a meal that one day.

It's pure entitlement and it's disgusting. Surprisingly I found that the lower income/societal class the person is the more entitled they would act towards me as a service worker.

I'm definitely too old, but as a Millennial I love Gen Z. They got their funny internet things, their doom memes, their music, and I say go for it. They're picking up and running with the rights for all, they're more open than we even are, and it's just awesome to see. People love to make fun of the younger generation but are so quick to forget what we were actually like back then.
