Robert E Lee is similar to Rommel. It's problematic to use their name for things, but ignoring them is historically dishonest.

ryathal ,

I haven't has a car with mechanical locks in a long time. I've also not had a battery so dead the locks didn't work.

ryathal ,

From inside sure, most cars have an override in the handle. It doesn't change the lockout problem.

ryathal ,

There is significantly more recoil in a revolver. It's not just the slide, but the additional weight also helps reduce recoil.

ryathal ,

That's a fair comparison. Superman is powerful enough to always make the right choice, even when it's hard. The appeal comes from Superman discovering and making the right choice.

Batman makes the necessary choice (apart from killing), which isn't always the right choice. The appeal comes from stories where Batman walks the line between criminal vigilante and hero who saves the day.

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

It's Irish American, I doubt it has anything to do with Ireland.

There's about the same number of foods that are actually from Europe, as there are foods that immigrants made theirs once they got here.

ryathal ,

Sam's club is superior anyway. They have a larger and more stable selection at the same or better prices.

Also acceptable "Spaceballs 3: the search for Spaceballs 2"

ryathal ,

Does that include buying magickarp for extra pain? Hopefully you are using an emulator so it at least loves faster.

Banks would go out of business and credit unions would look a lot more like banks. This is assuming both business and personal accounts move. If just personal accounts move, not much happens.

ryathal ,

Just get it sharpened locally or send it out. Sharpening knives isn't something you need to do that frequently. Unless you really want it as a hobby.

ryathal ,

Depends on the knife, some offer lifetime sharpening from the manufacturer.

UN Security Council backs plan for Israel-Hamas ceasefire ( www.reuters.com )

UNITED NATIONS, June 10 (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council on Monday backed a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and urged the Palestinian militants to accept the deal aimed at ending the eight-month-long war....

ryathal ,

They have, but it's largely meaningless because nothing really happens unless hamas releases all the hostages.

ryathal ,

A second vote sets a dangerous precedent if you ever want to do something unpopular.

ryathal ,

If there was fraud show the trial and proof it affected the outcome, then start talking about another vote. There's essentially some low levels of fraud in every vote.

ryathal ,

That's probably the best way to put it without writing an essay. 5 is intentional with mechanics, new ones become available as older ones become automated or less relevant. 6 is just a constant barrage of things happening, especially with gathering storm.

ryathal ,

Most electric cars have regenerative braking. It's not magic though, it takes more energy to speed the car back up than it recovers. Regenerative braking just makes stopping less bad for range. Sure you can go down a mountain and gain a lot of power, but not enough to go back up the mountain.

ryathal ,

The casting alone is a reason to be skeptical.

This might be a dumber move than the guy facing domestic violence charges calling in from the same house as the defendant.

Lemmy is pro Linux, anti Israel, and communist.

If they do figure it out you could be in for a very long debate about how far away something is inside a bag of holding.

ryathal ,

The EU isn't going to kick out their scapegoat. Countries are perfectly capable of coordinating and sending aid without an EU resolution. If Germany, France, or anyone else wanted to send aid it would be in transit already.

[US] I'm hesitating launching my own business because I'd lose health insurance for my family. What are my options?

I have everything pretty much ready to launch full time. Time, skills, customers, support from family. But I'd leave my current job behind and with it my family's health insurance for the foreseeable future. I can't afford any of the options I've seen. It's the one thing holding me back. Any ideas for affordable health insurance...

ryathal ,

There's a few options.

  1. Get healthcare through your spouse.
  2. Start your business as a "side hustle" while maintaining your job for a while.
  3. Try to find help through a small business alliance or chamber of commerce. (You probably need employees to get any real benefits)
  4. Welcome to running a small business, everything is far more expensive than you thought.

Why do people throw out old motors, bicycles, anything metal into rivers and lakes instead of a junk yard or the trash system?

I have been watching magnet fishing and people love to toss stuff over bridges without a second thought on the environmental impact. Hiding evidence I can almost understand but not lawnmowers, car batteries, etc....

ryathal ,

Depending on what it is the cost is a lot more than $30 which is a big reason these things get dumped. An old fridge with toxic coolant could be closer to $1k.

ryathal ,

You're missing out on some quality movies in the early part. Iron man, captain America, and the avengers were all very good. After that it's pretty much civil war and infinity war that are any good.

ryathal ,

Fortunately Canadian teams don't win cups anymore.

The question is if their remote disable will be triggered before the US blows the factory up anyway.

ryathal ,

The imperium has access to mind wipe technology, and has used it for those that survive incidents with chaos or xenos that are considered classified. They can't really afford to simply kill everyone exposed to these things.

4ish years ago when I bought a house I was convinced not to get a house inspection, would it be crazy to get one now just to make sure it's all good?

Was 25 and super nervous, so when the realtor was like "oh yeah they just check for basic stuff, but I looked around and it looks great" I was like "Oh okay, this is so astronomically expensive every penny saved is good..."...

ryathal ,

There's tons of the country outside the coastal regions where land is pretty cheap.

ryathal ,

The costs of home maintenance are pretty crazy if you aren't prepared. The cost of an inspection is basically nothing compared to furnace, a/c, roof, windows, siding, flooring, or structural repair. Most appliances cost the same or more than an inspection as well.

US military says Gaza Strip pier project is completed, aid to soon flow as Israel-Hamas war rages on ( apnews.com )

The U.S. military finished installing a floating pier for the Gaza Strip on Thursday, with officials poised to begin ferrying badly needed humanitarian aid into the enclave besieged over seven months of intense fighting in the Israel-Hamas war....

ryathal ,

You need military personnel from a country willing to do that. No one would trust Israel, Biden isn't doing that in an election year. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria don't really care about Palestinians, or would make things worse with their presence. The US would block a UN presence more than likely. Europe is a bit preoccupied with Ukraine, and wouldn't put troops into another war zone with limited up side.

ryathal ,

It wouldn't be just delivering aid. Once the military is there it's a military operation. Their goal can be protecting aid, but that also means they likely have to fire on hamas raids, or even the Israel army at some point and either case is bad for everyone.

ryathal ,

What about fat guys? Does that up the average?

ryathal ,

It's a balancing act though. A lot of top talent is going to leave either way, so over focusing on them hurts everyone else. Mandatory return to office was a lot more costly than most companies hoped for though. It was essentially a lay-off, but it left companies with pretty much only the bad employees compared to a more traditional approach.

ryathal ,

The problem with the hard pull is that the employees that had options left. Those are generally the better employees.

ryathal ,

Every place I worked there were employees that I'm not sure how they had a job. Those people aren't being contacted by recruiters, and they aren't leaving voluntarily. Layoffs are a companies chance to remove some of these people.

Getting into Civ 6

I got into Civilization rather late with their fifth entry. I was hesitant because as I get older I need more time to game than I do new titles. Still I picked up six with all DLC during the last sale. I have to say I am liking the changes. It was good to wait because Civ does need its DLCs to feel complete....

ryathal ,

5 is a more traditional civ, 6 adds a lot of different things that add new layers, maybe not better things though.

ryathal ,

Hamburger units feel appropriate for things that can be hamburgers.

A decade is a lifetime in technology. Moore's law had just ended when this was put together.

ryathal ,

I'm assuming they are totalling the cost of paper for everything that they do digitally. Maybe a bit of bonus for moving that paper as well.

ryathal ,

Important thing to remember, don't leave after you get put in a room. Get formally discharged, or it becomes AMA, and insurance will always deny coverage.

If you check in at the desk and leave, it's not a big deal, but once you start to receive care you really should stay.

ryathal ,

Social security is a Ponzi scheme, not a trust fund. There's no growing pot of money, the inbound payments are directly used to pay current benefits.

ryathal ,

Banning politics is a political stance. It means that the only allowed politics are the status quo. It also means in message boards that the mod's political beliefs are what is allowed.

Asking why is a waste of time in an online space with such rules.

ryathal ,

Most memes have nothing to do with the person in the meme. I doubt crowder himself made the meme, even if he did it doesn't really matter as the meme has transcended the person st this point.
