I'm also unsure of what you think imperialism is.

Here's a hint: I think a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine should involve a new referendum organized and monitored by an impartial body (so not one picked by either Russia or NATO) before I was comfortable with Crimea or other parts of Eastern Ukraine joining Russia.

It's a good compromise because it leaves everyone unhappy.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Your “compromise” is letting the mugger only take half of your wallet.

People aren't property, you don't get to keep them just because you own them. They have self determination.

Are you currently in Crimea? Other parts of Ukraine? Is this really your call?

No, it's theirs, which is why I want them to have a choice! I'm the one that wants to let them choose whether they join Russia or stay with Ukraine. You're the one that wants to hold them against their will if they truly want to leave.

I'd be comfortable with allowing them to do what they want. Why do you not want the same?

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Zelenski wants guns and bullets. What do the People want? Do Crimeans want the US to give Ukraine more guns and bullets? Or do they not count for some reason?

Skinny pants breathe, great for summer and terrible for winter.

Putting them on in air conditioning solves the first half of that.

And for swamp ass you can prevent it if they cling to your thighs and cheeks with absolutely no space for heat to get trapped. Just really wedge it up there!

Why is Biden making it easier for Trump to get reelected?

queermunist , (edited )
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

He could choose to do what his supporters want him to do, but he won't. A majority of Americans disapprove of Israel's actions in Gaza. A majority of US voters want a permanent ceasefire. The numbers are even more stark among his own base. There's no constituency for this genocide unless he's trying to win over Trump's base.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

I just posted polls that clearly show the opposite.

If he lets Israel drag us into WW3 he will certainly lose in a landslide. If he does what Reagan did and force Israel to back down, he'll maybe lose some support from hardcore Zionists (who are mostly Republicans anyway) but he'll gain back a lot more from the majority of Americans that oppose this genocide.

People like me.

I'm not voting for genocide and you have no one to blame for that but Biden. Deal with it.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Biden is doing genocide. We're already in Hitlertown.

This November is a choice between polite Hitler and rude Hitler. If you vote for this, the Democratic Party is going to learn one lesson: they can kill as many children as they want and not lose a single vote i.e. "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters." If Blue MAGA wins, they will put me in a camp and you will vote for it because the other party would be 'worse.'

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

I am not speaking in hyperbole!

Biden is already cracking down on peaceful protesters who support Palestinians, it isn't much of a stretch to start going after people more broadly. Biden has already "put every single university and college president on notice,” and Republican congressional members are doing McCarthyist witch hunts.

If you actually pay attention, the stuff Trump says he's going to do is already happening.

By the time we get to the election it's already going to be much worse than it's already gotten, and you will vote for it.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Examples of the hundreds of people being rounded up at dozens of pro-Palestine protests? I suppose Biden has plausible deniability here since he's not sending in National Guard, but these are cities controlled by Democrats in states controlled by Democrats at schools predominantly supporting Democrats. With as heavily armed our cops are in this fascist country they don't need National Guard to crack down anymore.

The problem is that feedback loops start to kick in above 2°C so it doesn't matter if the economy crashes.

In fact, in some cases that makes things even worse. One example is that without smokestacks and ships pumping out sulfur dioxide the albedo of the atmosphere will rapidly drop, which might cause immediate and rapid warming over a period of only a few years.

We could be pushed past 2.5°C or even 3°C without industrial forces contributing at all.

So despite climate change, Australia's federal government has just committed an extra $3.25 billion into building a toll road and a 20-lane freeway widening.

For those who wonder why Aussies think toll roads are a scam (https://aus.social/@[email protected]/112405373613706682), here's a great example of why.

"Pouring an extra $3.25 billion worth of federal funds into Melbourne’s North East Link is a good use of taxpayer money, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has insisted, despite the project’s cost doubling just a few months ago.

...

"The North East Link – which includes 6½ kilometres of tunnels – will stretch from Bulleen to Greensborough. It will widen the Eastern Freeway by up to 20 lanes.

"Allan revealed in December that the 10-kilometre toll road had more than doubled in cost since it was first announced.

"The toll road was initially budgeted at $10 billion and reassessed in 2019 at $15 billion. But the government revealed last year that the updated cost estimate was $26 billion."

I think old news can become news again when new developments occur.

What I'll give you is that OP should have included those new developments in the body of the link, so that this conversation wouldn't have to happen down in the comment section. I don't think they were wrong to post it without that context, but it would have avoided our bickering.

Robot Makers Try to Reassure Public They're Legit After Elon Musk Fudged Demo ( gizmodo.com )

Elon Musk became the butt of more than a few jokes after internet users pointed out Tesla’s robot demo wasn’t all it appeared to be. As it turns out, a video the billionaire posted of Optimus, the company’s much-hyped humanoid robot, was actually being controlled by a human slightly off-screen. And it’s interesting to...

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

It sounds like you are under the impression that imports are bad for the economy.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Immigration absolutely helps the US economy, because it parasitically siphons all the skilled workers out of other countries that it underdevelops and hoards their labor for itself.

People think remittances help underdeveloped countries, but labor is the superior of capital, losing that skilled labor is never worth the paltry sums that get sent back home. It's just another shape that imperialism takes.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

People make their own history, but they do not make it as they please. Our material conditions limit our agency. We go where the jobs are, where the money is, where the possibilities for a better future are. Those are all choices.

But you can't ignore the material conditions that lead to those choices. We aren't just free floating agents in a sea of possibilities.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, and the people who could develop that local opportunity aren't there. They all leave as soon as they can.

That's why I said they're underdeveloped countries. They're not "developing" in truth, but are being kept from becoming developed. How do you think that happens? In part it happens because of the IMF giving predatory loans and then imposing austerity on the people when the government can't pay their loans back, but it also happens because labor is the superior of capital and these countries are losing skilled labor.

I am not blaming them for leaving their countries. I am blaming underdevelopment, which is a product of imperialism.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

I think you may have misspoke. You said I'm removing their agency. I did no such thing.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Don't misunderstand, the people moving to the US are blameless. Imperialism works by siphoning up all of the skilled labor around the world for itself in order to make life better for people within the imperial core, and this is part of how the imperial nations underdevelop other countries. People get educations in their home countries (often at the government's expense) and then they take that education out of the country to put it to use in the US (or France or Canada etc). They're just going where the jobs are, though, that's not their fault at all.

queermunist ,
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Egypt is also a useful case study, because the US props up its shitty government. That's also part of how the Global South is underdeveloped, it's a multifaceted machine that sucks out everyone who can help make the country better and gives support and resources to the people making it worse. It's not just legacy from the 20's and 50's, this is an ongoing problem that is created by imperialism.

Also when a Global South government tries to solve its problems, such as through nationalizing resources or land reform, the US buries them under sanctions and attempts to make a regime change. This, too, is part of how imperialism underdevelops the Global South.

There's a reason Trump came out against this ban, he knows it's going to be unpopular and he loses nothing by flip-flopping on it.

This is just a free W for Trump and an L for Democrats with literally zero upsides. It accomplishes nothing besides pissing people off!
