Maybe. Or this will play out like Slack and IRC.

Initially, Slack integrated with IRC. Which was great! It meant I could use xchat to talk with folks, and could set up simple bots using standard IRC tools.

And then Slack killed that feature...but it absolutely didn't kill IRC, because die hard IRC users never cared about Slack in the first place.

My prediction is it'll be the same --- what sort of people will be attracted to Threads vs a smaller "proper" instance? Probably the sort of people who would never consider a federated platform in the first place.

Just speculation and I could certainly be wrong...

By that logic Lemmy/Mastodon/fediverse are already extinguished. Those of us in the fediverse are already "marginalized" wrt Twitter/Threads/Facebook/whatever.

There are very good reasons to hate Meta, but personally, I think EEE isn't the biggest issue.

Basically sounds like the Tesla game plan, which was super effective: roadster (which is purely a toy for the rich) and a little later the Model S (practical EV), and then introduce an affordable model.

Not every ISP! Where I live there's an awesome ISP, Sonic, which is pro-NN, and last I heard only offers "best effort" service --- which means there's no throttling your link, no paid tiers; if the fiber and hardware can support 10Gbps symmetric, then that's what you get.

Sadly, they're not the norm. And sadly, not offered at my address.

KDE is minimalistic?! Granted it's been a very long time since using it, but I'd say Fluxbox or i3wm are minimalistic, KDE...not so much.

I've only recently branched out from router defaults...only reason was that I wanted to VLAN off my home network, and mostly just so [Home Assistant-controlled] smart devices can't talk to the Internet at all.

If you self host, or want to try it out, Immich is amazing. It feels very much like Google Photos, but you can run it completely locally. Great integration with desktop and mobile, both Android, and iOS.

Yeah, tenure definitely a double-edged sword. On the one hand, being able to voice potentially unpopular opinions is important. On the other, having dead weight occupying faculty positions which brilliant younger folk would kill for --- folks who would be more productive, more engaged, and contribute more to the world --- is...well, maybe not great.

I think this is the real question.

Did they quit and join a competitor who offered a better WFH option? Or did they get a taste of the good parts of white collar pandemic life --- no commute, flexible hours, work from anywhere --- and decide that actually, their entire identity is not just their professional life, and maybe they should retire to see the world/spend time with family?

There are definitely some high profile rage quits over return to office, but I think there are a lot more of the "hey this was fun but time to take care of myself" quits.

Benchmarks are of course just benchmarks, but the single-core performance is better for the M2, and the range-topping M2 is about 2x faster than the i9.

Also, regardless of how something compares, if it is ever memory-bandwidth bound, then faster RAM should help. While most tasks may be CPU or IO bound, AFAIK there can still easily be memory bound tasks in real-world workloads.

I picked the i9-11900k for comparison since I think that was the last one to only support DDR4 (making it "DDR4 era"). Ryzen maybe faster in the DDR4 era though?

Yes, there was a perfectly fine, upgradable memory standard before. And many 486s were also perfectly fine, upgradable computers.

Someone else pointed out Tailscale; I've had luck with free tier VPS+WireGuard.

I have an Oracle one which has worked well. Downside is I did link my CC, because my account was getting deactivated due to inactivity (even using it as a VPN and nginx proxy for my self hosting wasn't enough to keep it "active"). But I stay below the free allowance, so it doesn't cost.

That said: as far as anonymity goes, it's not the right tool. And I fully appreciate the irony of trying to self-host to get away from large corporations owning my data...and relying on Oracle to do so. But you can get a static IP and VPS for free, so that's something.

But they're not necessarily cheaper to operate. The efficiency gains aren't enough to offset the high price of electricity compared to gas, at least where I am (California/PG&E).

Not a problem for many people, but for those on the edge, a more expensive heating bill is a problem.

Disclaimer is that I don't know if rebates/discounts for using electric heating would make it cheaper than gas, but talking to friends, it ends up being slightly more expensive to keep the house warm.
