What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

Earth has been quite obviously life-bearing for at least 2 billion years. We should have been wiped out long ago.

I believe the theory is that as civilizations broadcast a signal indicating life exists strong enough such that it is picked up by other civilizations, the dark forest theory applies. Essentially we haven't broadcasted a signal loud enough to be picked up

papertowels ,

This is quickly becoming beyond my knowledge pool, but does this assume that all life is intrinsically linked to oxygen?

papertowels ,

Thanks! That's a different way of looking at the problem that I hadn't considered.

effectively require a dedicated purchase. Rather than giving the kid yoru old motorola you kept in the drawer.

Ah right, because smartphones don't need to be purchased

A group of them came by my college every week and provided a low cost, all you can eat vegetarian lunch. Don't know much else about them, but that's a point in their favor in my books.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

Gaza: After ICJ order to halt attacks on Rafah, Israel launches over 60 air raids on the city in 48 hours ( euromedmonitor.org )

Palestinian Territory - Israel continues to ignore orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), including the Court’s most recent ruling. This ruling requires Israel to halt its military assault on the Rafah Governorate in the southern Gaza Strip and reopen the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the movement of...

Idk man, Trump's got some wild plans for Hitlertown.

“On day one, we’ll restore our travel ban. We had a travel ban because we didn’t want people coming into our country who really loved the idea of blowing our country up,” he said. He called the ban an “amazing success.”

“We didn’t have one incident in four years, because we kept bad people out of our country,” he claimed.

“I’ll also be implementing strong ideological screenings for all immigrants coming in,” he
said. “If you hate America, if you want to abolish Israel, if you sympathize with jihadists, then we don’t want you in our country and you’re not going to be getting into our country.”

Trump also said he would cancel student visas of Hamas sympathizers.

“The college campuses are being taken over, and all of the resident aliens who joined in the pro-jihadist protests this month, nobody’s seen anything like it,” he said. “Come 2025, we will find you, and we will deport you.”

...

As president, Trump would “put every single university and college president on notice,” he said. “The American taxpayer will not subsidize the creation of terrorist sympathizers on American soil.”

I know you were speaking in hyperbole, but it sounds like he'd actually be gunning to actually put Palestine supporters in camps.

Sorry, the website doesn't make it clear to me, what are these numbers indicating they're a recipient for? Are these direct donations from Israel?

papertowels ,

Can you link some sources as examples?

Not OP, but the cero one is one I found that seems to check the boxes. It's a cargo bike that was inspired by japanese mamachari bikes - very utilitarian bikes that are analogs to the dutch commuter bikes.

I just purchased a used, older version that still uses a chain instead of a belt, but it handles nicely. Built in frame lock is incredibly convenient!

papertowels ,

E-bikes are wonderful in that they democratize cycling. You no longer need to be a Cyclist™ to get around town on a bike. You can be in the process of getting in shape, and progressively use less pedal assist while still enjoying functional biking that can enable errand running or a commute.

Maybe it says something that China limits access to their kids

In 2019, Douyin limited users in teenager mode to 40 minutes per day, accessible only between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Then, in 2021, it made the use of teenager mode mandatory for users under 14.

Seems like a bit of a digital smallpox blanket.

You realise the AI is being trained on pictures of real children, right?

Can you share a source? Just like how people utilize the internet to distribute CP, there are undoubtedly circles where people are using ml for CP. However my understanding is that by and large, popular models are not intentionally trained on any.

papertowels ,

....okay, seeing as you haven't actually done any research, yet arrived at a conclusion, a conversation about this is going to be difficult.

Let's get more specific so we can have an actual conversation. When you say "the AI", what do you mean? Dall-e, midjourney, or some guy training and using their own model on a local computer?

Are you familiar with large models being able to compose concepts they've seen, to produce something not found in its training data?

papertowels ,

I have said literally nothing about ethics.

You used a technical assertion in your argument. Out of curiosity, I wanted to learn more and asked you for sources.

You can neither prove nor are you capable of discussing said technical assertion. I am now going to leave the conversation. Seeing as you can't prove or even discuss it, I'd hope you avoid using it in the future, or at least learn more about it.

papertowels ,

Your statement would sound a lot less dramatic if not for the fact that literally everyone goes to school.

"Not being paid for your work" 🤣🤣🤣

My man, your book report is contributing nothing to society. Future scholars will not look upon it with awe. It is purely an exercise to help students as a whole develop as individuals.

Here's my question - how do you expect teachers, who are actually providing society with a much-needed service, who are already well understood to be overworked and underpaid, to productively encourage students to pay attention?

papertowels ,

Threw down over 20k in fixes so far in our first year of homeownership, and due to interest rates and closing costs, we don't really have the opportunity to move anywhere else without taking a significant financial hit.

You bet it's not for everyone.

I actually recently learned about housing co-ops. Basically an apartment complex led by a committee of residents. It's non profit high density housing, so you can buy a share (meaning rent an apartment) at much lower rates. As an example, in my area the co-ops are at 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of traditional rentals. The downside is, from what I hear, the folks managing the apartment complex can be even worse than an HOA if you're unlucky.

IMO this is the sustainable way forward for housing.
