Always does but some implementations are better than others and bills still need to get paid. Network TV can’t force you to watch ads before beginning your program, but streaming can. I’m irritated that Prime has ads even though I pay for it but at least the way they handle them (only before the program starts) is acceptable to me. Interrupting a program to show ads the way YouTube does is horrible customer experience. What’s crazy to me is the way network tv shows have gone from 22 minutes in a 30 minute block to 17-19 minutes.

Maybe the vid angel people can get on that.

I’m using Voyager and it’s great. I don’t even use the app, I prefer the PWA.

I think most people in the market for an EV know that all the manufacturers are changing the charging port to the Tesla NACS standard next year. Range anxiety is still the biggest issue for EV adoption and the supercharger network is the only practical option right now. Tesla hasn’t innovated in a while and current Tesla owners are put off by Musk’s antics. I’d personally wait a year to see what the options are.

True enough to get the industry in North America to move off vanilla ccs.

Watch: Adobe angers artists with new Photoshop terms ( techcrunch.com )

Artists got an unpleasant surprise when they opened Photoshop this week, as they were shown a pop-up window asking them to agree to new terms of service. Among the changes: Adobe now says it has the right to access customers’ content through “automated or manual methods.”...

The biggest problem GIMP has is the name. We need activists to decry the name as ableist or something. I’m sure it was a hilarious joke at the time, but anyone who had seen Pulp Fiction has a pretty strong mental image when they hear the name. They ought to just drop the P and call it GIM. Then it can be a fun play off GIF. Is it pronounce Ghim or Jim?

I have you beat then! My first experience with Photoshop was either 2 or 2.5 on my Mac IIci in 1992-93. All that means is that I’m likely older than you. We bought the Mac to run pagemaker after a failed attempt to use it on Windows 3. I started using Illustrator around the same time. I still use it, but mostly I’m throwing my money away on CC because I don’t have the skill necessary to care about AI stealing my work.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information ( futurism.com )

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

I scrolled his IG and he hasn’t posted anything new in a while but he certainly doesn’t look like he was 360 in any of his photos. One could speculate it was a recent weight gain. He also hasn’t posted any new videos of his singing on YouTube in a couple years. I can personally empathize with how he might have felt being excluded but don’t have a lot of sympathy for his lawsuit. Servers at a party are expected to blend into the background but being both big and tall probably attracts too much attention.

olympicyes , (edited )

Well he certainly wouldn't cheer anybody up at the party in either case. I'd put money on this case getting bounced as soon as a judge has anything to do with it.

ETA: I hope he's okay.

Facebook is a cookbook! It was there in the name the whole time!!!

Dumb phones don’t help you for tickets, boarding passes, tap to pay, etc. those things require strong security, not the latest tech. I’ve got a few teenage kids and even for them it’s not very practical to exist without a smartphone.

I’d generalize it as Reddit was for people who read the article, and Digg was for people who didn’t. There were other sites for different communities at the time as well like the Chive and their Bill Murray worship.

olympicyes ,

I gave away something on Reddit recently and found out that DMs aren’t the same between new and old Reddit. I got a reply on old Reddit and thought was the only interested person and latter logging in on a different browser found more messages that I didn’t see on old. The messages from old didn’t show up on the new site as well. What a mess.

I’m not mad about the scraping. The linkedin scraping case pretty much cemented that there was nothing that could be done to stop it. I’m just mad that I can no longer use the app of my choice. No such problem with Lemmy.

USA Light Truck definition: Firstly, the vehicle must have a gross vehicle weight--that's the curb weight plus payload--of no more than 8,500 lbs. Secondly, it has to be designed to transport persons, property, or be fitted with special features allowing its  "off-street or off-highway operation and use".

If you want to be mad about something relevant, be mad that Windows 10/11 use deflate64 for zipping very large file. By default, deflate64 is not compatible with Python ZipFile nor Gnome’s built in unarchiver app.

Star Trek example. It would be really funny to me if Scotty refused to personally use the transporter. Everyone else beams down and he shows up on the shuttle a few hours later.

iPad Pro with M4 chip boasts impressive performance jump compared to just-released M3 MacBook Air ( 9to5mac.com )

On raw performance might, the M4 really does live up to Apple’s promises, should deliver. Single core is up about 20% compared to all M3 chips and more than 40% compared to M2. The generational computational leap from the previous M2 iPad Pro is at least a 42% jump on single-core and multi-core.

I’ve got a high end Intel MacBook Pro and a low end M1 Mac Mini. The Mac Mini runs x86 apps live Civ 6 faster and smoother than the Intel MacBook can.

Sam Altman gives a pretty good indication that your point is correct when he began asking for $7 trillion for new AI chip development.

If the Stack Overflow site remains available then it still serves the same purpose it did before. I personally use ad blockers and don’t pay to use the site, which must not be cheap to operate. The bigger problem is if talented people refuse to share their expertise with people like me because they aren’t being compensated for their efforts.

olympicyes ,

Great idea. Then I’ll turn to ChatGPT for higher quality answers.

olympicyes ,

Not to mention that even if everyone were to switch to public transportation, you’ve still got the issue of RFID cards that track every trip you take on the system. Far cry from subway tokens for privacy concerns.

The train from LA to Vegas is under construction. The problem in Vegas is that the casinos don’t want you leaving their property unless you’re headed to another property they also own. Musk’s tunnel just goes to the convention center and is obviously not a serious solution.

olympicyes ,

Sounds like they are using it to reduce the size of the battery.

olympicyes ,

I wouldn’t use asahi Linux on a Mac but it would be amazing on a iPad.

olympicyes ,

The inventor is balding, so you might be right!

olympicyes ,

I have a Linux workstation and a MacBook. The arguments about keyboard and trackpad are personal preference at best. You can use whatever external devices you want with the Mac. I used Logitech mice with mine too.

If you want a package manager on Mac use Homebrew. It’s better than you’d expect for a system that doesn’t include a native package manager. I use docker on both Mac and Linux and can’t really tell the difference.

I bought my last MacBook with 64gb ram. It was probably overkill but I didn’t see any reason not to since you can get one refurb for essential 50% off.
It sucks that you can’t upgrade the ram, so make sure you have a good idea what you need when you’re buying the machine. Anyone buying one with 8gb is essentially buying a Chromebook. That’s not adequate for a power user like you.

olympicyes ,

It sounds like you want to have a mobile server, which makes sense too for some use cases. I just switched from 2018 Intel to M1 Pro Max and the difference is absurd. They were giving them away at MicroCenter refurb so I got one with overkill specs. Sometimes you can throw hardware at your problem and in this case it worked. It is faster, quieter, cooler, longer battery life, etc. I use BetterTouchTool to address some of the UI issues you noted and forget I have it until I use someone else’s Mac.

I initially set up the new machine via Thunderbolt and copied the apps, which was a mistake. That said every homebrew installed app worked. It was not too hard to purge the Intel homebrew and reinstall the Apple silicon version, and battery life got much better after doing so. Apple Silicon is a game changer. Everything I’ve seen about M4 says it’s supposed to be on TSMC N3E. Personally I’d go with whichever generation lets you get the most ram and ssd.

I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts about this medium article describing the use of Lima VM for docker on MacOS.
