Yeah, it's also not "just" if it's one of what feels like hundreds of steps now to make the OS somewhat usable.

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough ( www.xda-developers.com )

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

I wouldn't be so sure. I feel like many people would not buy another MacBook if it were to feel a lot slower after just a few years.

This feels like short term gains vs. long term reputation.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Most people will use whatever the default on their device is. Most phones that aren't iPhones come with Google apps and services set as default.

The only Google services I still use are YouTube and in rare cases Google Maps. But if YouTube continues to enshittify I'll stop using that. I've been using Google Maps mainly to get information about places to eat/sleep in cities, not really for navigation.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

May as well call it "Google Drive Storage Plans" again then? Aside from some dysfunctional AI features that's pretty much the only thing you get, no?

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Google Maps was a great app and service, it had decent navigation and always a lot of information on a lot of places. Nowadays it's cluttered with features including a "news feed" with social network-like posts made by people on places in the area.

On iOS devices I can highly recommend Apple Maps nowadays. They completely overhauled their maps a few years ago and I got great results navigating with it. The app isn't bloated, it's fast, the map material looks great and their version of Street View is a lot more sophisticated.

For strictly navigating you can also check out TomTom AmiGO. It's a free variant of TomTom's navigational system. I wouldn't really use it outside of car navigation though.

I used to use Sygic a few years back, but they switched to a subscription model and keep nagging existing "lifetime" buyers to subscribe.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

I actually have it installed. Great maps app, but it doesn't have turn-by-turn navigation as far as I'm aware.

Microsoft Edge nags users with a 3D banner to change Windows 11's default browser ( www.windowslatest.com )

Would you use Edge as your default browser on Windows 11 if Microsoft nags you with a 3D banner? Microsoft thinks you would. In a new experiment, which appears to be rolling out to Edge stable on Windows 11, Microsoft has turned on a banner that uses 3D graphics to promote the browser....

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Is there any OS besides Windows doing this?

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

I may have done everything Apple wants me to do then. I remember getting a single Apple Music popup in the Music app years ago, but nowadays I'm subscribed to their music service anyway. Do they nag (more than once) nowadays when you're not subscribed? That'd suck hard.

Should I ever get nagged again and again by my iPhone, I'll switch phones. This constant nagging and not respecting my settings is the #1 reason I switched from Windows to Linux.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

So a Planck-like ortho keyboard with a miniscule screen?

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

That's not what this is. You can download a supposedly dead torrent, add more trackers that might have peers available for that torrent to it, and re-add the modified torrent to your client.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

True. Might be easier to just drop a bunch of torrents to the website though.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

People still go on holiday once or twice a year, snd many travel by car and always prefer their own car over rental. A 100 mile range EV being good for 95% of your use cases doesn't help you much with the other 5%.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

I'm not saying they shouldn't rent a car for these occasions, I'm just saying that's probably the reason why hybrids are more popular.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

I mostly agree with your statement. If you want people to switch to alternatives, the alternative needs to be better than the status quo in some way.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Going by train in some countries is a huge pain in the butt though (Germany for example).

I'm guessing that's what she meant, but I think no matter which way she meant it (either that the team would be worse all-white or better all-white), it's not a good comment to make either way as I don't see how skin color relates to skill.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Where did I say that it's racist? I said it's not a good comment to make, purely from a logical standpoint.

Why do I think it's not a good comment to make? Because I don't think there should be any relation made to skin color at all in this case. Some of the best soccer players in the world/country just happen to have a certain skin color.

She makes it seem like an all-white team would definitely be worse (or better) compared to the current lineup, even if there were 11 white players objectively better at soccer than all other players that could've made up the team.

She could've said "the team is as good as it is because we didn't discriminate between skin colors when picking the best players". That would've brought her intended message across.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Apparently she tweeted it, didn't she? So even if she tweeted it as a response to an ongoing discussion on X, this tweet would've been read by many as-is, and the tweet itself wouldn't have provided a lot of context.

With that being said, I still don't think her original statement logically made a lot of sense.

That's all I'm saying bud :) just my opinion.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Yup. Let's not forget that pedophilia is a mental disorder. I'd assume that many people with pedophilia don't become offenders, but I think that the number of offenders could be much lower still if these people got proper help and treatment before they ever commit a crime.

Sure, if these people actually commit crimes or if they're about to, we have to make sure they're physically unable to get anywhere near children. But I feel like in most circles if someone were to come out and admit they have this mental disorder, they'll be frowned upon, probably lose all their "friends" and not get any help. On the internet, it's far worse than this.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Hm, okay. I personally still wouldn't trust them with anything, as they're clearly willing to go as far as they possibly can.

I understand that in the corporate world, switching away from Adobe isn't as easy.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Note that suspends != cancelled and it's just the "Pro", with a cheaper model allegedly in the works.

We'll see where a cheaper model lands in terms of price, but it's very clear now that $3500+ isn't really the price range where most people buy something out of curiosity. Because let's face it: the Vision (Pro) still lacks a "killer app" for the masses.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Ah so this is about swapping the battery on-the-go so you can get rid of your depleted one and get a freshly charged one within minutes.

That's actually pretty cool then!

Not quite sure how this relates to Apple though.

This will be my first Framework, already preordered a few weeks ago.

They finally offer a 120 Hz display, and while it has slightly rounded corners which isn't ideal, but I'll take the 120 Hz with VRR and higher resolution over perfect corners. They explained they had to use a panel that was already on the market because they don't have enough volume that they can afford to order a custom display and with the Framework 13 using a 3:2 aspect ratio options were apparently very limited.

They also offer a keyboard with the Super key having a neutral label (not a Windows logo) now.

The new webcam is apparently quite a lot better, but I don't care too much about that.

I went for the i5 125H model, I think the difference of almost 400,-€ to the i7 155H isn't worth it for most use cases, as you only get 2 more P cores (with all other core clusters being identical, I think 4+8+2 vs. 6+8+2) and 8 instead of 7 GPU CUs. I feel the difference will be negligible for my use case as soon as it hits power/thermal limits anyway. This also seems to be the stop-gap generation of CPUs, with both AMD and Intel appearing to make noticeable steps forward in the generation.

There's also the AMD model which is great and got most upgrades the Ultra model did (new display, webcam and keyboard options), only missing out on a slightly improved cooling system. Between the i7 and R7 I probably would've gone for the Ryzen 7, but I feel the i5 is the better choice compared to the Ryzen 5, primarily because the iGPU is stripped quite a bit compared to the R7. Intel is also less restrictive on which expansion slot supports what, with every port supporting full USB 4 including DisplayPort. Not a big deal as there are still enough fully-featured slots on the AMD model, but it's a bit more convenient to just plug in any card anywhere and it works.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Oh yeah, looking forward to hopefully many years of platform support. They'll obviously have to switch to different memory modules (as an example) at some point (CAMM should be next), but I hope they keep the board compatible with the case, modules, I/O and display for as long as anyhow possible.

I'm coming from a ThinkPad T490 and if that would've been a Framework which I could just upgrade from the i7 8565u to a Core Ultra or Ryzen 7000, I wouldn't need/want a new notebook and could simply upgrade.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Lenovo has been weird for many years now with their built-to-order configuration options. They often announce 4 to 5 display options when in reality maybe 2 or 3 are available, and some of them only in combination with some weird other configuration options. Then it also depends on country of order.

I'll go against what most comments said and recommend DirectX 11. Yes, DXVK will translate it to Vulkan anyway, but Larian's own Vulkan implementation is definitely less stable compared to DX11.

I've experienced multiple crashes during simple things like opening the character sheets using the tab key, or crafting alchemy potions. I never had a single crash using DX11. I used Fedora 39/40 and openSUSE Tumbleweed, so the kernels were fairly recent. Radeon 7800 XT GPU.

I had the same experience under Windows 10 (before I switched to Linux), Vulkan has smoother frametimes but DX11 is more stable.

YMMV, this is just my experience from almost 400 hours played so far.

Vimms Lair is getting removal notices from Nintendo etc. We need someone to help make a rom pack archive can you help? ( slrpnk.net )

Vimms lair is starting to remove many roms that are being requested to be removed by Nintendo etc. soon many original roms, hacks, and translations will be lost forever. Can any of you help make archive torrents of roms from vimms lair and cdromance? They have hacks and translations that dont exist elsewhere and will probably be...

narc0tic_bird ,

Centralized archives will always be vulnerable to this.

Why does this happen to some of my games? ( slrpnk.net )

title really.. got a few games where this oldschool TV error shows instead of the actual main screen, the same happens with Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen. It's a super weird thing, as before this appears the actual loading screen is present, but this error-image just decides to slowly fade in...?

Many boards support ECC even when not mentioned. Most ASUS and ASRock boards do for example.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

Could've just gotten a Ryzen then. These Epycs are essentially relabeled Ryzen CPUs.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

The server/workstation focused ASRock Rack AM5 mainboards list plenty of ECC modules in their QVL. The "gaming-focused" ASUS B650E-E I'm using even has two ECC modules listed in its QVL.

So you could've already gotten verified ECC support, the fact that the same CPUs now exist with a different (EPYC) branding doesn't change that. Finding these mainboards isn't particularly tricky either.

narc0tic_bird , (edited )
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

"ASRock" and "ASRock Rack" are two different series of motherboards.

Here's the QVL of one of their AM5 mainboards: https://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=B650D4U-2L2T/BCM#Memory - it doesn't limit these modules to specific CPUs. All CPUs with ECC compatibility also support these modules on this mainboard. Some of these Rack boards are over a year old, and they always had some ECC modules on their QVL. This - again - isn't EPYC 4004 specific, they couldn't have validated it with EPYC 4004 CPUs a year ago. In fact, their CPU support list doesn't even list EPYC 4004 CPUs as of today, as they haven't released a BIOS update adding (official) compatibility in for these CPUs (it will probably be released shortly though).

ASRock Rack AM4 mainboards also officially support ECC memory. So if you wanted verified ECC support on a comparatively cheap AMD platform you could've always gone for one of these boards with a regular Ryzen CPU (not an APU). The boards are a bit on the expensive side but if you want official support (for whatever reason you'd need that in a homelab environment) you can get it.

PCIe is back- and forwards-compatible, so even an RTX 4090 would in theory work in a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot.

Now, PCIe 2.0 x4 is obviously really slow compared to what most current cards support (PCIe 4.0 x16), but I doubt transcoding is bandwidth sensitive on the PCIe link.

So pick pretty much any card, be wary though that some consumer-focused cards artificially limit the amount of concurrent transcoding sessions they support. Seems like Nvidia is limiting consumer cards to now 8 sessions, which is probably plenty.

@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

By the time Snapdragon X Elite devices are broadly available you probably have to compare them against the M4. Apple specifies the M4's NPU with 38 TOPS while Qualcomm specifies the Snapdragon X Elite with 45 TOPS, but I wouldn't bet on these numbers being directly comparable (just like TFLOPS from different GPU manufacturers).

The M4 also made quite a big jump in single core performance and multi-core performance seems to be comparable to what the X Elite can achieve unless we're talking about its 80 watts mode, but then we'd have to take Apple's "Pro" and "Max" chips into account. Keep in mind current M4 performance metrics stem from a 5mm thick, passively cooled device. It will be interesting to see whether Qualcomm releases bigger chips on this architecture.

Price is obviously where the X Elite could shine as there'll be plenty of devices to choose from (once they're actually broadly available) and if you need anything above base models (which mostly start at 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD at Apple) you'll likely pay a lot less for upgrades compared to the absolutely ridiculous upgrade pricing from Apple. Price to performance might be very good here.

If and when Linux distributions start seamlessly supporting x86 apps on ARM I'll be interested in a thin and light ARM device if it really turns out to be that much more energy efficient compared to x86 chips. Most comparisons use Intel as a reference for x86 efficiency, but AMD has a decent lead here and I feel like it's not as far off of ARM chips as the marketing makes it seem, so for the time being I think going with something like an AMD Ryzen 7840U/8840U is the way to go for the broadest Windows/Linux compatibility while achieving decent efficiency.

I don't like the fact that QDOLED seems to always have shiny panels. I get that it lets the colors pop more and whatever, but I'm not sitting in a dark room. It's usually well-lit, and no I don't want to change that. I enjoy the sun shining and I also enjoy some artificial lighting in the afternoon.

So it seems it's WOLED what I'm looking for, which seems to have matte/diffusing panels mostly.

Fullscreen brightness on either QDOLED or WOLED seems to be pretty meh at best though.

What I also don't like, even though this isn't exclusive to OLED monitors, is the missing continuity in resolution coming from a 27" 2560x1440 monitor, which has been a standard for many years. Most 4KUHD "gaming" displays are around 31.5" so if you'd want to get the same amount of real estate per physical inch you'd have to set scaling to 1.2-1.25x. Fractional scaling can already look bad at 1.5x, so this is a mess.

In an ideal world (or in my ideal world at least) there'd be "5K" (5120x2880) 27" panels as standard (I know they exist, but not as high refresh rate panels), so you could replace your 2560x1440 27", use non-fractional 2x scaling and have content at the exact same size as before. Larger panels could still exist, but they'd be closer to a "6K" resolution with the exact same pixel density.

narc0tic_bird ,
@narc0tic_bird@lemm.ee avatar

It makes a lot of sense for non-gaming tasks. Text looks great and non-fractional scaling makes a big difference. Try it for yourself, there are several non-"gaming" (60 Hz) 27" 5KUHD monitors out there. And remember just because you can't notice a difference doesn't mean no one can.

And for gaming: most GPUs can't drive most games at native 4KUHD. Some form of temporal upscaling (DLSS, XeSS, FSR, TAA etc.) is usually required anyway, and whether you're upscaling to 4KUHD or 5KUHD from the same internal resolution doesn't have a big performance impact.
