So, it's cool enough that I finally have the urge to put on my zippered hooded sweatshirt again. Part of my involves being comfortable with fabric against my skin -- and not having that (and having to wear short sleeve shirts) has been unbearable. That means it's way too hot for me.

@Aerliss @DoomsdaysCW @actuallyautistic I have a problem with parts of my skin – especially on the torso and arms - becoming hyper sensitive from the fabric, touching it. It is not uncommon at all for me to take off my shirt and bra and run around topless in the middle of the workday.

One of the many reasons that remote work is important ;)

Reason 42,343,648 why allistic people shouldn't be allowed to create forms.

"Name of person whose certificate you're requesting"

So um, if the person is filling out a name change form, do they put the current LEGAL name of the person OR the old name that's being changed?

I assume old name, but that's ALSO a false statement on something I'm about to sign, & have notarized as being a TRUE statement, because it's NOT that person's name.

100% serious:
Someone should start a business where you get on a zoom call with an allistic person, share your screen, and they explain to you WTF these stupid forms want from us so that we don't spend the rest of the day spoonless & wanting to cry from trying to navigate this nonsensical 🐄💩

Obviously they'd have to be trained in how autistic folks see the world + some empathy training because most folks think we're being dramatic or that we shouldn't be struggling.

@Rana @actuallyautistic man, even allistic people need that for job interviews.

"what's your most significant negative quality?" No-one knows what the right answer to that is. You tell the truth you'll never get the job. You like and... well you're lying in an interview.

"why do you want to work here?" The answer is obviously "because you're offering money & that keeps the roof over my head & food on my plate" but that's also obviously NOT the answer.

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@vger @Rana @actuallyautistic

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

"Well, we both know the average turnaround is 1.5 years in this industry, you're an at-will employer, & layoffs are rampant so definitely not here."

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@vger @peteorrall @Rana @actuallyautistic

Yeah, that’s an awesome answer that everyone should strive for. Of course he probably assumed you meant that you were NOT happy now, which regardless, if it’s true or not, is not what you said.

I do understand not wanting to work with someone who is regularly talking about how miserable they are, but this isn’t that

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@Yuki @actuallyautistic yes, and no. There have been so many forms that I have struggled with that my allistic wife has been able to patiently explain what I needed to enter in the field without any real difficulty.

of course, part of the problem is that my brain gets wrapped up in indignant rage at the mind-numbing idiocy and falsehoods that are been forced upon me.

“That’s not what that means! If i answer what they asked i’ll be screwed, but that can’t possibly be what is intended!!!” Etc.

I know people with estrogen have said their ADHD gets worse during perimenopause/menopause, but I'm wondering if people with testosterone 50+ also notice their Autism/ADHD symptoms getting worse. Especially more "inattentive"/stuck in their thoughts.

I feel like we really need more research on all of this.

@KitMuse @actuallyautistic @neurodiversity I'm 50, trans-femme recently restarting hormones, ADHD, & Autistic so I think i can speak to a lot of these.

estrogen drops during perimenopause & i've gone from basically none to too much recently. I don't think i'm any more or less stuck in my thoughts than before hormones.

My autism symptoms do feel worse BUT I've also been doing a lot of work unmasking work, & listening to 🧠's needs, & feeling / being percieved as "more autistic" is normal then.

Autistic brains be stupid. Well, obviously not stupid, they just seem to work, or not work, in mysterious ways.

The main one that has always got me, about mine, is that I have no memory for sound, absolutely none. I can't remember a song, or a sound. I can't remember what my parents sounded like and none of my memories carry, for want of a better word, a soundtrack. I can remember what I was thinking and what others were saying, but not hearing them say it, nor any other sound. I also don't dream in sound, at least as far as I know. All my dreams are silent.

And yet, and it's a big yet. I have an excellent memory for voices and sounds. Like many autistics I have near perfect pitch, at least when I'm hearing others sing, or music playing. Just don't ask me to reproduce it, because I can't. If I meet someone I haven't met for a while, then I will almost certainly not recognise their face, or remember their name, but there is a very good chance that I will recognise them from their voice. I am also very good at detecting accents. Even the slightest hint of one in, say, an actor pretending to be an american, will get me searching Wikipedian to see if I am right about their actual nationality.

So, if I can tell the sound of a Honda CBR engine two blocks away, or a voice, or an accent buried deep, I must have the memories to compare against. And yet... nope.

So, as I said, autistic brains be stupid.

So, i am / was a musician. As a teen (late 80s) i was REALLY into Metallica. One thing i would do to entertain myself while riding the bus is to listen to one of the tracks in my head and individually isolate instruments. I remember being able to listen to just the drum track, and then do things like get rid of the high-hat or toms.

Admittedly, I'd listened to those songs HUNDREDS of times.

BUT ALSO I'm the same on everything else.

Is autism self-diagnosis valid? Yep. 💜

Hey all, after reading dozens of research papers, and meta-analyses, and living through it, I made a thing!

I'd love it if you'd check it out! 🥰
